so the previous buikd thread for the newbys my vfr750 fighter http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/showthread.php?9411-hyofighters-got-a-new-fighter-project

So ive been riding it for a while and ive clocked up some 7000ks and its been great , rides well , has been drama free , but there are few things that id like to change

firstly the bars as much as the clip ons look mint giving the cafe fighterish look and are awesome in the twisty stuff , they are just so hard on my wrists which are pretty much rooted already from racing bmx and a few brocken bones , plus that fuel tanker of a fuel tank just isnt made for hugging thats for sure especially with my slender build NOT

secondly that headlight sure it looks the goods but it is absolutly useless , it points at the ground about 5 metres in front of the bike and on high beam it moves up about half a metre thats on full adjustment , its only a 35w 35w h4 i tried a 50/65 but it was to hot and started to melt the housing , i tried a h4 LED globe it was nice and white but still crap , wasnt going to was my time with a HID in the end

thirdly the exhaust im in two minds with it at the moment and feel free to give me some ideas , the high rise sounds good and keeps it semi legal but the shorty sounds better and is f'ing loud but runs like a bag of shit with it on , id like to do some thing even better and have something even more tucked away similar to bens venom tlr , so if yas have any ideas shoot away
the high rise
http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr%20fighter/IMAG0816.jpg
the shorty which give the illusion of a slimmer rear end , maybe???

so with all that in mind i started buying up some bits , in the original build i really wanted a LSL urban head light but at the time i couldnt afford one , but recently one was on ebay and after doing some research and contacting a few members cheers mono and banditrod i got onto crazymofo you was selling it , it was purchased and on its way

then it was onto the bars , i really wanted the clip ons but flat drag bars would be so much more comfy , did some looking around and got a Cool n Comfy top clamp anodized black with red risers sent from the land of never ending rain (not victoria) landed at my door for $220 might not be a blingy as some but it looks good , some chrome flat drag bars , then since there flat bars those BXP ressie are gonna be on the piss so on the phone to Ben at extremes for some new straight adaptors , and whilst i was there some of his fancy fork mount indicators , and a new acewell mount

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/DSC00409-1.jpg

though i have come across a problem already , just had a quick look at the top clamp and i think its going to foul the tank , since cbr vs vfr this might pose a problem , adjust my stops so i dont get as much lock or modify the tank or maybe i can slide it back just the slightest bit

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/DSC00407-1.jpg

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/DSC00406-1.jpg

lastly i was going to get the headlight surround painted to match the bike and touch up the front gaurd as there is a few good sized stone chips in it already but , after getting a bit carried away one afternoon there is a few more panels to touch up aswell as a rear hub that needs dismantling to get some belt material out of the seal , so if im going to touch it up and maybe have to modify that tank i might mount the gauge on the tank and think of a new colour to dip her in

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/th_edit.jpg (http://s1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/?action=view&current=edit.mp4)

whoops but it was all good fun

Nice one. I've got a set of black drag bars on my VFR750 project. Picked up some LSL adaptors from the German e-bay site so I don't think I'll have any fouling issues as they sit very nicely on the original triple clamp. Might have a problem with the master cylinders running into the top of the fork stems though.

Those fork mounted indicators look really sweet.

Now you're talking Scotty.

like you I really like the cafe look but a bitch to ride at anything other than flat out rate which is OK if you are on a race track but not in the real world.

Zorst will be hard as you have pipes everywhere!

You mention Legal? PPFFTTT!

Love this bike. I followed your last build and it really inspired me to get in and have a go.
I reckon your on the right path here now. I'm not a big fan of clip ons and would've went for a set of fatbars.
The exhaust is ok as is, but that shorty you had on sounded wicked. Maybe have a go at jetting it to suit it or something so it rides better.
I like that new light too. I found a similar one to replace my dominators with later on down the track which is similar to this one but with indicators in it.

Belly pan???

hyofighter
12-08-2012, 02:30 AM
cheers fellas , might get cracking on it tommo , the headlight im looking forward to at least ill be able to see on me way home from the drags, yeah had thought about a belly pan , if i have to mod the tank and paint again i might just do the belly pan thing , kinda the wrong time of the year to be pulling the bike apart should be waiting till next winter but o well

Heya Scotty

Just checking in and found your 2.0 topic, good stuff. What you need is a Two Brothers Racing full system with left exit - lots of bass thump and it doesn't much matter what muffler you run - just make sure all the photos are taken from the right side :)

Mine is an Indigo right exit system, much harder to find than the TBR, but I am talking to an exhaust shop about a run of copies - I'd fund the intial run, then recoup the cost by selling them. I'll let you know if that eventuates, as I am not interested in becoming an exhaust mogul and I am helping the shop make a buck off 4WD owners the price might actually be pretty reasonable.

The headlight looks the goods, but a HID projector retrofit would really set it off... chrome shroud and paint the reflector black. I just bought a set of 3" projectors that are just about a bolt-in to my 2008 Patrol, from these guys: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/index.php

Let me know if you want any more info on that.

phantom i think i stick with the urban mt03 light as i paid for that one already , as for the exhaust well i have been home sick for the last 4 days and i have smashed the net and reread all my streetfighter mags and i think i might try to replicate something like this maybe

http://badbikes.de/galerie/albums/userpics/10001/normal_thug5.jpg

azrael how do you feel about welding a fuel tank , i think im going to have to section the front of it , i was thinking i might make a glass mould of it and make it look cool with the acewell moulded in it and have a fuel cell under the the fake tank but i like the 20 odd ltr capacity , so a reshape might be in order , if this is going to happen i might try and find another vfr tank so i can still ride till its done

well she went for her last spin with clip ons this morning and then it was on , pull down time

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/IMG_3832.jpg

so off the bits came and some problems were encountered but nothing that cant be solved , the top clamp is isnt as bad as i thought it was going to be , i think i can knock a bit off meat off the clamp there is a fair bit there and maybe adjust out my stop a tad and it should be right , fingers crossed

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/IMG_3840.jpg
http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/IMG_3843.jpg
http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/IMG_3842.jpg

next problem was the bars , i really wanted flat bars but with out using some riser blocks im not going to get the master cylinders to clear the fork tops even with the wanky adjusters off so i think im going to have to go some mx style bars , o well join the masses

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/IMG_3838.jpg
http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr fighter/IMG_3839.jpg

so apart from those things and getting some longer front brake lines , throttle cables and choke cable it should be a goer , looks good so far any way

I've got a similar problem with my VFR project. I'm going to try moving the master cylinders between the grips and the switch blocks, which should give me enough clearance. It makes the levers a bit wide, but a set of shorty levers should fix that - both brake and clutch cylinders are fairly new Nissin ones.

26-08-2012, 09:56 PM
cheers rod , hoping it all turns out good , so the drag bars didnt happen likei wanted so ive gone the good ol mxbars , cant beat em join em hey , but they will work , so i have the thottle cables and choke cables out and getting some lengthened ones , ill have to get onto longer flont brake lines , and the worst bit cut and shut the looms to make them longer but ill neaten it up a bit wilst im at it , plus move the igntion key so the acewell can mount up neater , all this before sending her over for the drags , im gonna be busy

well i spent my not a fathers days with my mechanical kids in the shed . took the vh for a sunday cruise to the pub for lunch , came back got th gsx to fire into life and then the arvo on the number one kid the vfr

took some measurements and headed to work to use the linisher to make the required clearance for the tank and then put in some new bumpstops didnt loose to much lock in the end and the fork mount indicators just clear the frame , pretty happy that i dont have to mod the tank in the end

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr%20fighter/IMAG1038.jpg

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr%20fighter/IMAG1040.jpg

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr%20fighter/IMAG1042.jpg

the acewell was going to hang to far out if i left the ignition barrel there so ill move that but i might think about one of those remote jobs maybe if not ill find some place for it , so the gauge mounted up reasonably neat and new front brake lines went on new adaptors to straighten up the bxp ressies now just to fit the lengthened thottle and choke cables , do some more wiring and shes ready to ride

ozzy1100
04-09-2012, 06:43 AM
Fuck no shit can't get much far than wa lol
Only that I ran no sway bar on rear till I put weight in back
with comp sound ( 4 pot 14 mm) , combo of nolatane and rubber at back to keep soft
Adjust panhard rod and koni shocks and was going for adjust top links for
pinon angle on vl 4 pinon diff
At front man steer with just over 2 de camber with 0 back lash built into rack
Only 27 mm bar (was looking at welding rails to take 32 long term)
strut tower brace and nolatane everywhere( as stiff as poss) and koni again
did need adjust z link to help with bumb steer but never got that far and a few other bits
I was only running a mild man 6 so weight over front was better but needed turbo I had
finished
And u are so right car parks were fun but it was worth it when moveing
this was in the late 90s fuck it was fun to drive

i kinda like them there to hooligan i didnt at first but its grown on me , so the front end is done , serviced , and wiring complete , pretty impressed in those indicators i wasnt expecting them to be all that bright but i was wrong there bright as and as long as the plod think so too ill be happy

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/vfr%20fighter/IMAG1078.jpg

Ignition barrel hole was covered up by the acewell so the gauge didnt have to stick out so far , a new home was found for it and i kinda like it there too , would have been nice to use socket head bolts but there werent any in town so painted bolt heads it was but you can hardly see them

if they only pick the indicators on it ill be having a good day there is plenty of other stuff they could pick on , but i think they will be fine the distance apart is enough and they are acually brighter than the e marked one i had on before its just they dont have that standards mark to keep licensing happy

2884

so it seems around here that forced induction is the new black around here , and so i have gone on the hunt for options , turbo will be a hard one with the likes of a rear mount turbo and a blow through carb setup , alot of mucking around to get right being a v4 carbs on and off is just a prick , having supercharged a car of mine and having just helped on a blown 350 im a bit of a fan of it , so i have done a bit of looking around there are a few vmax's out there with top mount chargers and holleys (yuck) so there others that i can research some more

so i scored this amr500 postitive displacement charger , 500cc's of air per revolution and a 160000 rpm redline , google shows me there used in many applications and seem to be pretty reliable , i found some good info that needs some reading time spent on it

2882

2883

so my plan is take the carbs and manifolds out make my own manifold top mount the charged crank drive for the belt low boost 6 psi or so , fake glass tank cover fuel cell under , carby im thinking large flatslide , downsides i can see are reduced reliability , heat , smaller fuel capacity , the fuzz being haters

2 other options :

turbo the vfr and give it efi

stick the charger on the gsx1100g and drag race it

right after much looking and thinking about the vfr its just to much fun and ultra reliable to wreck it , still next winter it will get a makeover new look new colour that should make me happy

but the fate for the supercharger is still bike bound , in the shed is the gsx1100g of shaft drive goodness the blower may make it here as at beverly just around the corner there is dirt drags just about every month , it looks like fun and the bike is sitting there and i dont think it will be a nice commuter so strip it dirt tyre it and race it , sandfighter

rightio a year on from getting it on the road and the one thing ive really wanted to change was the rear shock , front end is cbr929 and the rear shock i picked up is also from the cbr and is a easy swap from what i have been reading just needs a spacer made as its a tad shorter so whilst im at it ill make it a bit longer to jack the back a bit more so i can drop the forks back down the tripples to get some road clearance again as i picked up a belly pan for her aswell that im going to make fit if it doesnt look to shit its a vf500 one kinda suits it , and lastly im going to make a new muffler stainless underslung and forward facing with a 90 deg slash cut tip

so i liked the mx bars and they were comfy especially for that trip over east to the drags but i still wanted flat bars and after fitting the ones that werent wide enough to the dirt dragger i really liked the look and i still wanted that for the vfr so i stopped in at toms one arvo and got from him some raw 7/8 cro mo tube and made my own flat bars , nice and wide at 900mm to give the staunch look and clear everything from the tripples but thats when i went a bit far for a simple arvo job

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/IMAG1661_zpsd51a432e.jpg

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j477/hyofighter/IMAG1656-1_zps2153b192.jpg

so whilst i was going to fit them i thought ill move the fork tube indicators under the bottom clamp and move the forks back down the clamps to give back some ground clearance , so then i took the headlight surround to the painters to use the leftover paint i had to cover it and touch up the front gaurd of its chips

next was the rear i had that cbr shock to put in and it needed a spacer to be made to bring it up to the same ride height so i made it thicker to jack her up a tad more about 20mm in the end and that cbr shock rides heaps better than the vfr but now its more adjustable the plan is to get the front and back setup by someone you knows what there doing

the only drama is the ressie hose is close to the exhaust but ill just have to keep an eye on it

tried to fit that belly pan but after chopping and chopping to get it to fit it just ended up looking cheesy and was so flimsy i binned it , same with the muffler idea it just wasnt going to fit nice so out the window with that idea , so end result i thought the bars were a bit wide at first but now the gaurd and surround is on i like the look and suprisingly its comfy , but im yet to take it for a decent thrashing so ill see after that

Now you're talking!

Silly question - you can't spin the shock so the remote is to the other side?

That looks great, definitely no lane splitting though.
I finally put the 929 rear shock in mine, too. Hasn't been ridden in anger with the new shock yet though.

Hey man, I'm new around here. I was linked to this build by Gix11 in my introduction thread and I'm glad he did. Its not my style, I prefer a more neutral naked look, but its very impressive work. That "cola" paint looks really cool.

I was thinking about your rear shock, would it be worth it to get the reservoir hose connection repositioned to the 90 degree so its pointing straight at the back wheel? Not sure what cost comes with a mod like that, but I have had it recommended to me that i should get my vtr250 rear shock nodded to be reconditionable instead of buying a whole new Ohlins or Hagon or other. I can't imagine repositioning the resi connection would cost too much. But then I don't know much of anything either, so there's that...
