Hey all, got my Ducati wheels today.
I have stripped them down and the rims are getting blasted and powder coated this week.

Now the spokes on the front rim are fuked! Well not fuked but the chrome is peeling and rusting.

I have had a few quotes for

-replanting,$4 each but then I need another $100 to re harden them.

- new ones from Ducati for $220

- or a stainless steel set for $350

All of which are getting too pricey, these wheels are getting real expensive
Real quick!!!!!!!

Anyone got any ideas???

Spokes unfortunately are not a cheap option anymore. I'm looking for a pair of spoked wheels myself, a 180/190 rear and 120 front both 17 inch and twin discs. I will probably end up using modern Ducati GT1000 spoked wheels, I had looked at Kawasaki 750/1100 Zephyr spoked wheels but they are extremely rare and always go for good money. I was offered a set recently for £200, but they needed relacing and a new rear rim, so it wasn't cost effective.
Personally If you're already having the rims powdercoated I would go with paint on the spokes, I wouldn't bother blasting them, I would just rub off any loose chrome and then use a coarse grade wet/dry paper to key everything up with.
I would fit new screw nipples on the rim end though rather than re-using the originals.
If you go for stainless then you'll end up using chromed brass nipples anyway, and the weight difference between the normal spokes and stainless can start to add up.

yeah i have been finding that out real qiuck, i had been on the hunt for a set of GT1000 wheels for ages
they are almost impossiable to get......over here anyway, finally got onto a set and grabbed them, the hub matches up perfectlly with my Aplilia disks and the spacing is perfect for my ZX636 forks!
i know if i want a good finish im just gonna have to fork out the cash........

Matching size spokes comparison chromemoly to stainless steel there is only a 2.5% increase. I'd say that if you can feel that on a road bike your doing alot better than most riders.

so not too bad, i told myself i would do this build right and take my time and even a few
rusty spokes would really piss me off!

ok so i got my nice shiney new stainless spokes,
only problem it they are thinner than the originals...
-original : 5mm -4.3mm
-new : 4.3mm - 3.9mm

i know stainless is gonna be a bit stronger, should i be worried?

have you thought about giving your rims and hubs to a lacing shop and telling them to build you the wheels

Hey mate, I have a wheel shop in Queensland and them thinner stainless spokes will be stronger than your original chrome spokes, providing they arnt cheap Chinese stainless, there is something that happens in the chroming process which weakens the steel and makes them a lot more brittle, I would recommend you get someone experienced to do the final true/tension on the spokes, as the last thing you want failing on your road bike is your wheels, good luck with it
