ok so im looking for a hub that will hold twin disks, i know the newer xl650, 750, 1000's
have them also a ducati sport classic, but fuked if i can get my hands on one.

anyone know of a simple solution?

i don't think there is a simple solution mate... i think its expensive or hard when it comes to modern spoked rims for a sports bike.

its not looking too bad i may have one, if im fitting a 120 tire what width rim would i want?

xa-mont

i think 3.5 is the norm to fit a 120/70 17

2.75 to 3.5 inch is the recomended rim width for a 120/70/17 the 3.5 inch gives the best tyre profile for matching modern wide rear profiles 150 and above, 2.75 better matches early narrow rear profiles (130 wide)

Might be worth talking with a good machine shop in your area and asking how much to have a centre made , go with 6000 series Ali Lump of billet big enough will set you back about $200 delivered from SA Suman Metals sell it cut to order last bit I got was 203 mm dia 200 wide cost $170 . Machining well if your lucky its payed for in beer , if your not lucky could cost you twice the price of the billet easy.

yeah thats a little out of price range.....

i cant find anything off the new XL1000's!

but i have scored a front wheel of an early GSX or GS (something Suzuki) im told......

but its twin disk (6 bolt with GSXR center hole size for disks) 36 spoke hole so it will match rite up to a
new 17" black Excell rim.

now should be fun lacing it all up together......

You want a GS750 front wheel. They only had a single disc, but they have the holes / mounts for the second one.

Good luck finding one though - most of them ended up on tarted up Katanas.

sorted then.

kiwi kdx

maybe not......

got the wheel today and have un laced it, the hub is good but disk mounting surface is only 75mm apart

as most modern wheels are around 130mm i may have to have the hub widen'd or 30mm spacers like bolt on wheel spacers, made for each side or can i get offset disks? like these:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/METALGEAR-BRAKE-DISC-FRONT-LEFT-SUZUKI-GR-650-TEMPTER-83-85-/160709665389?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item256b0ae26d

i know ill need it all bolted up to get exact measurements, but what are your thoughts?

Run offset disks that you like the look of ignoring bolt pattern at first (but sticking to a 6 bolt type). Once you find the look your after check offset, once you have your brake caliper spacing and know offset of disks get a set of spacers made (around 10mm instead of the 30 you were talking about)

If the bolt hole pcd is the same grade 8 high tensile with a shank (unthreaded section long enough to go through disk spacer and into the hub. Spacer can be made of crap off the shelf Ali (cheap as)

If the pcd is different then a set of spacers made from good 5000 series Ali (minimum) bolted to hub then new pcd cut into spacers for new disks. If you need to do this spacers would have to be in the order of 15mm thick to allow enough meat for thread and shank of bolt to go into spacer. (Disk Brake bolts have shank of bolt through all surfaces to reduce lateral loading on threads)

Dont forget to use disks of similar width to the originals for the calipers, or you may run into problems with brake pistons binding or seals chopping out. And grade 8 high tensile bolts with loctight.

thats good advice thanks mate, i cant do too much just yet as im mainly collecting parts and researching what fits what at the moment, i do know i want spoked wheels! and i have a set of 05-06 ZX6 forks with radial Tokico's that i need to find a set of triple's for as the 05 triples are not flat so i cant bolt risers to them, im hoping the 02-03 forks are the same diamiter.

I made these spacers to fit K2 gix tho disc's to the 89 gix 750 wheel, I used 6061 Al.
I have thought about wire wheels a few times, It's a bit harder with a SSSA though.

When you work out what you need give me a yell and we'll work something out.

Sure is the gimp is getting wire up front and rear (VFR400 SSSA) . Thought it would be no prob, but now that I've been looking at it with earnest its alot of machining and I still dont have an index wheel yet hmmm.

MATE!!!!!! those spacers are excatlly the picture in my head!!!!!
if you could help me out when the time comes that would be amazing,
i dont thikn my hacksaw and grinder would cut the mustard.....

i have spent hours on ebay looking for the rite rotors, and am narrowing it down....
at the top is the gr560 original disk, if im having spacers made the offset isn't an issue
as long as thr bolt rece is rite ill be sweet, and ill need to get the diamiter of the disks
once i bolt the calipers to the forks.

haha thanks for the props mate!, but she's not mine...... that belongs to a guy in the U.S
but thats what im working towards, maybe with a different swinger and a later model tail.

i have copied the front end and wheels, not sure if ill put them on a Z750 or a Z1000, i would prefer
the Z1000 but ill just have to see what i can find for the rite price.....

rite..... so im lacing the GR 650 hub to a nice new 17" rim....

the GR had a 19" rim, i want to get new spokes as it is too much work to cut a
thread further down all of them and they are only 2.5mm.

how do i measure the length for the new ones, as the spokes are not on a 90* angle
otherwise i would have just taken 25mm off each one.

the 19" rim spokes are 190mm.

Can you not just shove a few long ones in the hub and rim with it all laying on a bench centred , mark them with a fine point permanent marker ? I'd bet it will be close to 25 mm less anyhow.

Here's something to think about....pretty exxy tho!!

the ZX636 forks with thr GSXR calipers want me to throw a 320mm disk on there.

yeah mate,

320's on the Aprilia. I have a stock set of rotors here. they are in almost new nick, you can have em for $30 if you want them. The do have barely any offset though, so that may be an issue for you.

They need to be carbon, to bring the weight back under the stock wheels though.

SOLD!!!!! I'll take them!

Yeah I see they only have a 5mm offset so it's gonna be tight, but worth a shot...

Twin 320's with 8 pistons.........now thems brakes!

I like those rims but not sure about the gold nipples?

Here's a tip for you, CBR 1100 XX Blackbird discs have the same 6 bolt mounting so they'll bolt straight onto those early Suzuki hubs, they're 310mm dia. & have a bit of dish but you'll probly still need to make some spacers.
Aprilia/Ducati are a 6 bolt mounting but have a different PCD so you'd hafta slot the holes.

kiwi kdx
10-04-2012, 07:41 PM
Thanks Trav, will do.

I could use The CBR disks but I'd have to mill the radial mounts down, I'd rather have the bigger rotors if I can make it work.

the Z1000 triples just turned up at work..... and FUK! what a nice chunky set of triples they are!!!!!
