Started giving it a clean up and doing a few jobs.

It came with 4 brand new DNA oval filters,
what i normaly call "K&N pod type"
not sure if I should fit them ?
Might wait untill I find someone who has.

Had a look at the levers,
they are Pazzo's not El-cheapo's.

Yoshi Cylone should polish up OK.
End can has a bolt hole for a baffle.
Not sure if you can buy them or if
i'll just try and make one up.

Cam cover has two square plates
held on by off-set allen bolts.
Looks like it had some sort of emmission
polution trap thats been removed and
blanked off ?

Just needs clocks.
Am I right there are two different types ?
Early and late models ?
Going back to the UK soon, might look there
as they were quite popular, or maybe go aftermarket.
Not sure genuine are going to be within my budget.

I like it.
Its growing on me....

Where on the cam cover are the block off plates?

The instruments are different 01-04 and 05 to 08. The only difference I can see is the bigger keyhole for the immobiliser, but they're probably different inside.

Not mine, just a google pic.

These are missing and have blanking plates.
I take it the P.A.I.R's system has been removed.
Cant see its any use other that in getting the bikes complianced,
by all reports its an improvement without it.

Thanks Drew. Will keep those in mind.

It has an issue with the battery loseing charge.
Dont think it battery or charging system related.
Even with a flat battery you can jump start it, use it, and it charges up OK.
Leave it a few days and its totaly flat.

Both Chris and Large say it could be due to the smashed clocks and the
internal circuit board being damaged and open to the weather.

I've pulled both the blue multi-plugs to disconect the clocks and charged
the battery up. Will try it in a few days, see if it changes anything.
Theres a bit of electrickery in the clocks but it still seems to start and
run OK without them.

Flicking through a few old mags I found a 14 with "Koso" clocks.
Google took me here....
http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/rx2n-20k-rpm-multifunction-7-p.asp
and
http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/rx2-multifunction-multi-colour-screen-2-p.asp

Found a couple of new/unused Staintune baffles in my collection.
Put one in the Yoshi. Bit too small and not real good looking but
made a difference so it'll do as a temporary fix.

That is correct Tony - sounds like the PAIRS has been removed - it is of no use on the 1400 anyway.

The bike is looking great - one mod I would do is replace the ignition rotor with a 4 degree advanced one, or at least check to see if it has been done. That makes a difference on these bikes. Pic shows the original on left and the advanced rotor on right...

1334

I will also check to see what I have left over from mine - no use to me now!!

All done except the mirrors and clocks.
Looks like i'll get "Koso" clocks when I can afford some.

Managed to get a quick "test ride".

1 tooth down on the front, Full Yoshi system,
P.A.I.R removed and a Power Commander.

Pull's OK. Quite nice for a Porky retro.

RED ZX
24-04-2012, 02:11 AM
Glad to hear it was just the clocks draining the battery.

Yes it was P.A.I.R.S removal. Has to be done before dyno tuning, also cleans up the throttle in lower RPM and removes backfiring on decel.

Ignition has not been advanced. The advancers are NLA. But there is a DIY tutorial on the org.

Fork Brace is certainly from Just Bandits, along with the bar clamp and Bars themselves.

Levers are genuine Pazzo.

Koso are what I was planning on putting on it.

For those of you who are saying to get the suspension sorted, once adjusted the stock setup did suprisingly well.
Tony can comment on the state of the footpegs/side stand/engine mounts. Never had a hiccup from the suspension, mind you, it is adjusted almost to max settings.

I am pretty sure I still have the Yoshi baffle here somewhere. I have a couple boxes of bits from various bikes. i will have a rummage and send it down if I find it. All I can say is that it was almost as queit as stock with it in. It only lasted 1 short ride before I removed it. It was held in with a rivet, so I just drilled/knocked it out.

RED ZX
24-04-2012, 02:20 AM
I think I still have the orignal owners manual and toolkit here somewhere too. Just surfaced during some cleaning. Again, if I find it I will send it down.
Also it would look a lot better if you painted the fork lowers. It was always on my To-Do list, but had no was of pulling the wheel off and doing it properly at the time. That along with a Fender Eliminator would make it look much better.

The only reason I did not put the filters on was the prospect of cutting out the airbox, or moving the engine. Never found the motivations.

The most annoying thing about owning one, is the 4.2L of oil needed for a full change. JUST more than the standard bottle of Motul (all the bike has ever had in it BTW).

Also the front pads are brand new, only about 1000km on them. Original set were only half worn. I just am not someone who pushes hard into corners on the brakes.

Tony Nitrous

Thanks Chris.
Very greatful for any parts, info or advice.

The bike is a credit to you. Im very pleased with it, A lot better than I expected
to be honest and I think it'll be a long while before I can match your cornering on
it going by the pegs, stand and engine mounts.

The fork lowers seem to be a common issue on the 14's. Several folk have
mentioned that they are quick to mark and have painted/polished them.

Im off to the UK in a few weeks.
I plan to safety cert/rego/start using it when I get back.

Thanks again for the info.

Not too bad so far,

found permanent live / ignition live and earth.
Indicators / main beam / oil light / back lights were easy.
Plugged rev counter into original feed, seems OK,
Fuel guage seems OK,
Adjusted shift light and pre-shift light settings,
set clock and date.

Put the speedo pick up supplied on for now,
doesnt use a magnet, just counts "changes" so should
work with either disc bolts or spokes in disc ( 8-of)

I'd like to use the original feed but thats something i'll
look into in the future.

Nice looking 14 mate. I put heavier oil in the forks and a couple of clicks made a big difference. Also put a couple of jack up blocks under the rear sussies to sharpen up the cornering, DNA do a free flow filter direct replacement so no need to chop the air box, pod filters look the muts nuts though had some misfires when riding in the pissing rain. I've got a Yoshi Cyclone system (If Serco ever get back to me with a price for a skin) to go on, with a PCIII, bar end mirrors and some of those Titax levers from Ben after it gets regoed. I want to keep it, but I'm enough of a realist that if someone offers the right money- I'll take it.

I never intended to sell the last one, but old mate comes over to look at my TTR tard and saw the 14 and made an offer for both that I couldn't refuse.

The only reason that 18" cannon is on is to get registered.

Tony Nitrous

Have you ridden one yet?

They dont rev like a GSXR/Busa, but the fucking grunt they have could pull a caravan.

That's why I'm leaning towards using my other 1400 moteur in my buggy project.

Tony Nitrous
30-09-2012, 12:46 PM
Ridden several over the last few years.
Done a few bike swaps on rides and had a few "test" rides on this one.
Great for distance, pillions, lazy rides, heaps of grunt.
Wasnt impressed with brakes, top end performance or handling at speed

Both my Busa and King run 10.3's, i'd be suprised if this is close.
Maybe it will be if I can learn to use the torque and not look for horsepower ?

It should be registered soon. I'll stick some K's on it and give it some thought.
Worst case is it'll be my "sensible" bike and I can re-do the Busa
with a better tail and smaller clocks etc and use the Busa as a toy.

They can stay for now.

Go's OK. front came up a couple of times, easier than I remember.
Never ridden one in anger with lower gearing /pipe / etc before.

Speedo seems quite close with a quick check on my phone's
Diablo Biker ap. Will check it with a GPS. Will have another look
at the fuel guage setting, clock said half when it was almost empty,
might need to play with that.

Feels as good as, or maybe better than the B-King for grunt/torque,
clutch is nicer the the B-King, brakes feel like Gen1 Busa (poor to average)

Motors a little noisey top end, not going to worry untill its had a service.

I went to the RTA on Friday.

Spent about an hour at the counter with the nice lady who (to her credit) said this bike can't be registered, but you have two letters from us that state it can so she asked and rang around a bit.

The last call to the Inspection unit got a "to do" list from them, including 3 forms to fill in. I actually had 2 of the forms already printed out to hand to her. All good and I pay my $455 for the VIIU inspection and leave after being told I will be called to book in an inspection.

I get a call this morning from an inspector to book in the bike, I ask if I can book it in on a tuesday or wednesday so I can get the day off and he says he can come to me today- quick call to the boss and I have the day off.

So to cut a long story short- He's Been, He's Seen, He's Approved and stamped everything. I just have to wait for him to do the paperwork at the RTA end and I should be good to pay another ~$500 and get her registered.

So the standard mirrors and levers go back into the box for the next time I need to rego a bike. Exhaust is next.
