can u susspend or put rego on hold in Auz?

we can do this back home in NZ, so if doing a long term rebuild/project u dont have to go through the drama of re-registration, just go in and put the rego on hold, the plates stay live and you dont have to pay for rego when the vehicle is not in use.

is this Possiable here?
