ok so im looking for a more long term project, now that the R6 is up and running!

problem is im sick to death of standard frames that run diagnal from headstock to swingarm pivot!!!
(thats kinda why i went for the R6)

its got to be fighter not Bobber, would prefer 750/600 frame, and late 80's minimum.......

and something that hassent really been fightered too much yet, sv, bandit, etc

here's the few options i have come up with.

-GSXR750, i love the frame and would love to build a 7/11, but these are getting hard to find cheap!

-FZX750, impossiable to find!

-FZ750, hard to find cheap.

-Z750 one of the new ones, but too expensive for me!

anyone have any ideas that i have missed? or by chance have a GSXR750 frame/parts kicking about taking up valuable shed space???

If you want to do something that's different, that kinda rules out the gsxr 7/11 and bandit.
That's the reason i went with a vfr, i'd seen a few 750's, but no 8's.

Are you joking? That's got to be on the list of THE most streetfightered bikes ever!

What about reproduction old school from the early 90's - get the cool 70's look without the mad price tag:

1132

Zephyr 750

Brace the frame and find an 1100 motor of some kind. If they can do this to the old Zeds then I'm sure a zephyr wouldn't be far off, plus it would be a much larger project.

Check out this Zephyr 1100 with a GSX 1400 motor shoved into it:

I'll keep my eye open and let u know if I see anything

I'm looking for a project too, but I want a modern bike. Looking at Gixxer 1000, R1 & Zx10r ad the like, but nothing older than 2003/4.

But here's the trick, got to be under $5k ;)

Ha, so you basically want a GSXR '89 to '96 frame. There was nothing else from the late 80's onwards that wasn't a retro looking bike (naked) or had a diagonal frame. No point fighting it mate, just do the Slingy.

But I thought he was trying to avoid the diagonal frame?

the FZ is diagonal, but its not super bulky like a ZXR or CBR.

maybe i should just go with a slingshot........

I've seen a few YZF750/FZR1000's going pretty cheap nowadays.

Like under $2K.

That's a lot of bike for that sort of money.

kiwi kdx

yeah it is a hole lot of bike, but still have the bulky frame.

A guy at work has a GPZ 750 for sale which is at the other end of the scale....

What about an FJ1200. Cheap, old school, cant kill them with a stick and not a lot turned into fighters. Plenty of power reasonable brakes and supension, what more do you want. Check out Jumas FJ build on Customfighters. There's a few web sites dedicated to the FJ too.

@ "bluedrags" mate i have had my eye on that one for a while, i rekon it would be a good buy at $1000 bucks
as i just missed out on a 93 full fairing un-fuked with, 30k on the clock for $1500.

@ "Jinx" i think the FJ just made it to the short list!

i have been keeping am eye on this build on CF, and as a result i think a FZ 7/11 or possiablly a
FZ/R1 is at the top of my short list now...

a descent set of forks and a braced swinger and she'd be mint i rekon! thoughts?????

The Blade is probably the best looking spar frame out of the lot - a million German fighters can't all be wrong.....

Gotta agree with Hillsy here. I reckon it one of the nicest looking frames for fighting out there.

The blade does have a nice frame. Wouldn't mind upgrading the engine to a newer more powerful one though

a million German fighters can't all be wrong.....

thats the problem, too bloody common!

now after saying that......... think i have settled on the 7/11 idea!

i know i know they are just as common, but fuk the frames are sexy!!!

so i had a quick look at the wreckers today and a frame with bolt on subframe is gonna set me back
about $250, considering ill be swapping out the forks, swinger engine and tail the frame and tank are really
the only 750 bits i need.

or would i be best paying 1500ish for a complete bike???

is there a particular year that is used for the 7/11 build?

Gix11
06-03-2012, 06:06 PM
The bolt on subframe was from the water cooled models mate. There's your first problem if you wanted an oil cooled model. The most common and easiest to do models are the oil cooled Slingshots, '89 to '92.

K6Thou
06-03-2012, 06:07 PM
Go the earlier oil cooled gixer mate..

i see, these are the things i need to know, any other thing i need to know before
purchasing stuff?

Gix11

Source a '90 - '92 GSXR 750 if you want it to come with that era USD forks, or any of the frames from '89 to '92 if you want to add newer USDs. Any 1100 engine from '86 to '92 or Bandit 1200 from '96 - '06 should be a simple fit as they were all the same oil cooled model and dimensions (the only difference was CC - early models were 1052 Slingshots were 1127 and bandits were 1157 - although the Bandits were less aggressive and will need some playing with - if you're not familiar with any of them then you'll smile with any if them as well.). You will find the clearance tighter in the 750 frame and a few guys have claimed they can remove components without removing the tank (which becomes pretty common place with the conversion).

The bolt on subframe of the water cooled model is all well and good, but it still won't match up with most new tail ends, so cutting off the old subframe will be the go anyway.

Everything else is just peripherals so if you keep those things in mind you're into the most common Streetfighter project ever.
