View Full Version : It seemed like a good idea at the time - Z1000 J

Be prepared for the shortest build thread in history.

I have just agreed to buy a Z1000J from a guy at my work. I still haven't layed eyes on the bike, but it was dirt cheap and sounds like it'll be fun to play with. The plan is to pick up the bike with in the next week. Seeing as it's in bits, I need to assemble it and make it go, stop and turn. Once this stage is complete I'm hoping to have my application to the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club approved. A roadworthy certificate will be sort, club rego will be paid and then I'm gunna ride the fucker to AFR.

I know it seems like a bit of a task, but in all honesty it's probably less work than getting the GS sorted or the Kat finished.

I think the hardest part will be sourcing the parts. Guages are ruined, brakes are inoperable, need side covers. Haven't located the key or the headlight yet. The guy I bought it from said it was complete when he rode it into the shed, but it was disassembled and a lot of time has passed. I will give him a list of parts that I don't have and he will see what he can find.

I know I'm very short on time and when you take into account I am working away from home for a week, it makes it seem an even harder task. But I'll give it a red hot go and we'll see what happens.

just tow it up in the trailer and pretend it's the gs.

Iceman
12-03-2012, 07:36 PM
I'm determind not to trailer my bikes anymore. The GS has had it's fair share of playing trailer queen, but it made it to Bathurst and back (just) last year. If this fucker doesn't go buy AFR, it can stay home!

Good stuff Ice, big bore air cooled motors rock.
You might be pleasantly surprised at how little it needs to get going reliably, these Old Skoolers can survive long periods of storage without degrading too far (with the exception of the brake hydraulics)
Get stuck in.

I reckon ultimately it should look like this...

well, if it wasn't bad enough that I couldn't get all the parts to have this ready for AFR, I've just had another major fuck up. I had some time to play on this bike today and thought it was about time i heard it run. I put a battery in it the other day and the starter motor was turning it over, but it wouldn't fire.

This morning I check to make sure it had spark, and it did, so I figure it's a fuel problem. Knowing that the carbs were gummed shut when I got the bike, I thought I'd cheat and just spray some atomized fuel into the airbox. After a couple of sprays I got a vroom. Unfortunately it was not followed by another vroom, but a terrifing clunk. Now just to confirm my fears, I hit the starter button and sure enough it had seized. Fuck fuckity fuck fuck!!!

Now I need to decide weather to continue with this project or not. This makes four bikes that don't run now, and bugetary constraints mean it's gunna take a while before the motor can be rebuilt.

Fuck!

I've just been investigating my engine problem and found that when I removed the plugs and put a socket onto the sprocket bolt (when in gear) I can get the motor to turn over half a revolution, but then it dead stops against something.

Any ideas?

If you're getting some movement I'm wondering if a valve head has snapped and is lodged in your combustion chamber or the top of you're piston

Iceman
22-04-2012, 03:47 PM
I think your on the money there, I just looked at the valve positions thru the spark plug hole and it looks like the exhaust valve on number 2 (??? second from the left when facing the motor from the front) is staying open, and it's alot further open than the others. Looks like I need to dig deeper!

22-04-2012, 04:22 PM
When you posted that it sent a shiver down my spine. Ask me how I thought it was a broken valve, go on ask me, go on go on then ask me

So, I've taken TK's advice (insert TK's chalkboard pic here!) (OK - Si):

and decided that I want the Z as my daily. I pulled the head off it when I got home from work, when I was finished with that I went out to the shed to work on the Z. This is what I found after I removed the head from it.......

look at Kibblewhite valves, they are cheaper than OEM Kawasaki valves at around £22 each for exhaust valves, and are much better quality. I use them on a lot of old zed motor builds.

stiffsimon
26-09-2012, 07:18 AM
Give these guys a call. This where I got my Kibblewhite valves from. Guy knew his stuff and I got the correct valves within three days at a very competative price.

No visable damage to the piston or barrel TK, I guess it was lucky that it had only chugged once and was just getting turned by the starter motor.

Cheers Adam, I have actually heard of that guy. I'll definitely be getting onto him.

Thanks for the tip Simon, I'll check them out too.
