Ok, i've been running the turbo setup for a few years now and all is good but... it has been using oil. It has always used a bit of oil but it seems to be getting worse. It doesn't blow any obvoius smoke but it does smell a bit fumie at idle. The rings and pistons were new when i put it all together. I think it may be too much oil to the turbo. It's a gerrett GT-25 ball bearing turbo and i run a spring check valve in the feed line and a mr. turbo scavange pump. Any thoughts????

Have you checked the oil flow in against the return rate of the pump?

i put a clear tube in the return line so i could see what going on. the pump seems to take away the oil. i just rang ray hall turbcharging and he thinks i shouldn't even need a restrictor on the feed line but he did say that the oil should fall at least 100mm from the turbo then into a reservoir before being sucked out by the scavange pump.

I've never had to do that

i know. It seems odd. He also said "remove the restrictor immedieately before you destroy the turbo". I disregarded all that as i know 90% of bikes have retrictors in the feed line. The Mr.turbo kits all come with a restrictor.

Mine is just a cheap plain bearing turbo and Im a noob to the trubo bike thing but anyway. Im am running 1.5lpm oil to the turbo with the return pump rated at 1.8lpm and maybe 15mm drop from the turbo to a fitting adn it seems to work fine so far. Figured .3lpm would put a little vaccum under the turbo to help maybe

What rpm did you measure the oil flow at. At idle i only have a trickle but at 5000ish rpm it's flowing pretty bloody fast. What pump are you running. i think i might get a new pump as it is cheaper than an engine rebuild. if it's still using oil then i'll have no choice.

Did mine at idle and about 5000 rpm, from memory I have a 1.5 or 2 mm restrictor. As with everything my pump is cheap ebay job

Mine goes straight from the turbo outlet into a 90deg fitting and then to the pump. You should have oil in some way shape or form present in the cooler plenum and comp housing if it is coming from the turbo

i took the pod filter off the turbo and it looks good in the comp. housing. looks like it may be rings/valve stem seals. i have some work to do before AFR.shit..

if i can't get it sorted just give me a camel pack full of bourbon! On the upside... i found a website that does all kinds of turbo bike stuff. i called them this morning and had a chat. the bloke reckons that if you run more than 30psi oil pressure to a Garrett GT turbo you start using oil. i have not checked mine but i'm pretty sure it'll be more than that considering the standard oil pressure is 85psi.
