I started in 2010 when i ran out of ideas for a birthday present for my lovely wife, of course, tattoo machines! The gift that keeps on giving.. Unlike her more recent aquisition of a hunting bow which keeps on killing..i digress..

I have always been able to draw or sketch anything so i figured, how hard can it be? Well, its fucken harder than they make it look. All you need to learn is some beer, a threshold for pain and some art..
I started practising on myself then worked my way on to doing stuff on the missus and aside from the technical aspects of tattooing the one thing ive learned is a tattoo is only ever going to be as good as its art.
If you start with great art youll get a good result, well, providing you're not suffering parkinsons or advanced tourettes..

So heres my set up, one small corner of the house dedicated to that buzz and burn that is so addictive..

ok well i have recently discovered tattooing again which for me is good i have 1 pce started and soon to be finished and then i have 3 more peices to get done , ive never regretted the other 2 small ones as there were done when i was young ,im very much into old skool tattooing jonny sailor style , this peice i have on my right forearm is a work in progress and is done my someone i call brother hes a great human , my next pces will be a burlisque lady and a pin up girl on my arms and then i will start my legs some time down the track , so thats me an my tatt and thats where im at and my goals for more tattooing ,

Yeah doing the outlines is a lot like welding, same focus and breathing from start to finish. Same feeling too when you get it spot on.

ill prob stay with the liner i have i like that it has front and rear adjustment slots , i brought them from tat2u surply when the old bloke that hand made them was stoping and selling his stock
I remember catalogues of his stuff when i was in my early 20's
got both for 120 with the back and front adjustment and then when i brought the copy power surply of ebay with the full read out for cylcles, duty and miss hits for fuck all of ebay made life so much easier and i could see what was happening instead of quessing. it lets me use back adjust for speed and front spring for duty (norm good around 50% means good ballance of coil on and off). none of this means i know what im doing but easier to have a start piont lol.
Ive got the new hurricane power supply and it shits on my old variable volt bunky. So handy being able to set up multiple liners and sheders and save the outputs for each one for quick changing.

what ink did u go to i went for a skin candy starter set cause i liked the coulours and good ink but next i think i want some intenze inks but have been useing sumi(the real stuff not the copy) for black and insted of buying the shader i made it out of the full black they sell it as shader but its just 50 50 cut. i used witch hazel instead of water and them also cut the shader down to from 3 to 25 % light shade in bottles as well.
I started with intenze inks and now have a full range of skin candy (bloodlines range) and find both of then to be pretty awesome.
I use Kabuki bkack and tribal one pass for lining, and the kabuki greywash set for black and white shading.

one thing i will say is it is easy for me to get the tec right but shits me that i dont have the art right i have a good eye but not artistic as u seam to be and really from what i have found is more important.
and please note to any 1 thinking they can just buy a ebay kit and tattoo away please dont, do yr research and please please follow the health respects to doing work, shit work isnt all that u can give some poor fucker that u scare up cause it isnt as easy as the pros and tv shows make it look. things like green soap , detole , gloves and sharps container etc arnt just opptions.
This is true, you have to be surgical with everything. Everything i use is disposable and what isnt is autoclaved by a friend whos a bodypiecer.
sorry rant over but its fucking up what the hacks are doing in their kicthens over the world

and while i remember how do u find the rotery for lineing They are ok, they vibrate a bit much though they look so cool lol and looks like u like to use a 5 rl for yr out lines i have 3 that i never use 5 and 7 but thought of getting some 9 to 14 rl for out lines on new skool stuff and changeing from the 9 rs i use for fill to a 9 or 14 mag so i can lay my hand over at better angle I use 1rl 3rl 5rl and 7rl depending on the art, havent been game to try anything bigger yet, oh and that 1rl cuts like a knife
and just looked at yr new liner again dont know if its just the pick but looks like u need a bit more of a bend in yr niddle it looks to be sitting to flat and might get tube rub ? Yeah the geometry on that shader is a bit off meaning i either get a little tube rub or if i flip the needle when using flat stacks it sticks out the tube on a shitty angle, one of the downsides to chinese machines i guess

Thats cool Kev, i was planning something similar on my arm. Me and the missus love the burlesque style, old and new school pinups and hotrod styling. She is planning her sleeve at the moment to have a day of the dead style pinup on her shoulder with a ton of floral work around it.

Dont have any current photos (now finished the dragon and soon to start my arm) here is a front n back from a few years back.

Dragons tail runs down my right leg to about half way down the side of my thy. Next tat will be my left arm covering yosamity sam full sleeve fingers/hand/arm just trying to find an artist to draw up the artwork atm. I want exposed skeleton of arm with gouls/souls in pergertory ripping flesh from them with flames licking 100% of arm done back of hand. All in black/wash.

Then a brightly coloured traditional japaneese pick with geshia on my left leg/belly/chest opposing the dragon in a few more years.

i got my 1st in about 94 and last paid in about 2003 and have a very nice gray wash one off on my back that i used to take to a few shows but really to many other things and can never think of what i really want on me as a statement singlar and strong enough so havnt been back same prob as work on leg lol

Seems like your different if you havent got any in the UK.

We go to "Ink and Iron" in the UK most years and chill out, but I've never found an artist whose work I like.
Can't be arsed to design my own which is the best way I know. But I like ink and piercings, especially on a woman.
My lady would like me to have a PA, but I dont see the purpose really part from the bloody obvious.

as for my calf i dont know what to do with it just seams to look bare in colour like that
he is a japanise anime character spike spiegel from a very cool serise cowboy bebop
they are space bounty hunters and has great imargery and other cool characters but couldnt find any right for back fill and didnt nes want a thymed backing dont know really he just really is a fucking uber kool dude lol
had thought of norm colour fill in waves like most others even geometric designs etc but havnt found the right look yet so fucked if i know lol sorry hard to help when i dont even know what way i want to go sort of thing that when i see it ill know it lol

Machine set up n skin depth are the biggest things hey. Being taught rather than finding out the hard way is heaps better!

Unfortunately a tattoo apprenticeship isnt something u get paid to do, so Im doing it part time after work n on my days off. Workin in a furniture store at the moment, its doin my head in but at least it pays the bills till Im good enuf to start charging for my tattoo work!

well i think u should be set, yr art is good and like i said u have a great eye and taste that is the stuff that cant be shown u have to find yrself. shit and quess we do what we have to to get by ..........
one thing that people like azrael and myself have going for us is that our jobs teach us how to keep a steedy hand under the stress that u only get one go at it but really that comes with exp and any 1 can do that lol
is the shop where u doing app more new skool in set up or old skool . do they show u by feel or letting u see things like cylces per sec under throw etc. makes no dif to the outcome of the tatts some old skool blokes set up by feel and sound and their work is amazing. i just love the tec side as well lol

The shop is farely new skool. My mate that works there is pretty old skool tho, even tho he's only 26! Machine set up is more by feel. That said the artists there use rotary machines instead of the old fashioned coils n the power supplies are pretty tech 2! I'l be lookin at gettin a machine at the nxt tattoo convention in sydney & will be after a rotary too. Heaps more adustable, less vibes n quieter too! They dont really pack out as much of a punch as the coils tho... it is all very interesting tho! Im really enjoying my time there!

i was so much happer when i got the better power surply just for that fact of the feed back that knowing what is going on gives u
in the shop u will have blokes showing u what to look for and feel , the style of figure 8 that the front bar should look like etc
i dont have that just some reading and forums on speed etc so i love the read out on the power surply....
my liner was to slow at 115 cps and not enough thro so to get depth sometimes i would snag if i was carefull.
for yr 1st did they have u ride the tube or standard hang the neddle for the out line ? i did some blood lines and could never get used to ride the tube i like to see the skin, but have to say much easer when starting out to get that good consitant outline as takes away the worry about detph.

Google search Hokusai for the waves! Im really into super traditional japanese style tho! & I would have the centre of the sun jst behind his head on the R/H side & up a bit (if that makes sense)

For my 1st I let the needle hang full length. Whilst dropping the tube can limit ur depth, it also makes it impossible to see the needle! This can cause probs as the needle doesnt always exit dead centre of the tube meaning ur line wont always be where u expect it to be! So I went by feel & sight, just took my time & it turned out fine. The boys at the shop shade with anything up to a 17mag on the rotaries. Its true they dont have as much grunt. Seems to do the job tho! Guess it jst comes dwn to what ur used to!

i like the look of the stelth 2 rotory and y wouldnt u if i works that well but for people like me the prob isnt the gear lol and fuck 17 mag is a lot of steel to push
i just had a play with the japanise rays idea with some pen just to get a idea and found a manga cell type piece in goolge that i thought might work tell me what u think dont now what the backing colour should be and a few rays are out but just wanted to see if it would work

Ive gotten two tats thus far with a few basic ideas on what I want next. On my next visit to Brissy, I will go back to the guy that did my last tat and get him to fill in a bit more around the edges to make it more of a sleeve instead of a arm tat as such.

I rekon that looks rad mate! I'd leave the real comic book feel of the black frame around it too. Thats pretty cool! Pump the background of the flag full of white n ur on a winner!
Yeh the hokusai block prints are beautifull. I have a few books on jap block prints & also Hirioshi the 3rd. His traditional work is stunning! He uses a mix of coil machines & the old poking sticks. I take a lot of influence from those 2 in my art!

Strip back until u are left with the strongest statement with the least

And the more I look at the cell effect on that design the more I like it
Russ thinks his head is lost a bit out the top but it really is the style of those type art
The proportions i might play a bit more with just to check but I think that it's about on the money where it is
What u think about a 1 to 2 mm gap around his figure to make him
pop more or do it as it is with the red and black up to him.
Am a little worried about my abblity to get full depth of shade with white but I think u right best choose

Do it with the gap n see if u like it, u can always go all the way later if it doesnt look right. Personally I thing go all the way with it. I'd power line the top of his hair to make it stand out a bit better once the frame is in!

I hate to say it mate but that looks pretty rotten. Looks to me like its way too deep, having said that I will add the disclaimer of 'I am in no way an expert as far as tattooing goes'.

Years ago the local guy was putting his son through an apprenticeship and he did some work on my shoulder the whole outline is raised due to scar tissue because he has a little heavy handed......

Looks like the cunt was tryin to dig to china! Waaay too deep. & those big wounds will scar. Be very suprised if they hold any ink, and they will be difficult to redo. ok well springs turned up and i reset the liner and shader with them and am happy with the way they felt so i thought id get stuck in
ex picked my son up at lunch on sunday so had rest of the day to myself finished at 6 with some breaks(had to i pushed on to far the 1st bit and got the coils that hot that i have burnt where i let the machine sit on top on my hand)

a few places where shall i say fucked to get too and had to hold leg and arms at funny angles to get but happy with the way it turned out , mind u they all look great fress its not till they heal that u really see how u went

as a result i think in a few spots i might have a few blow outs on the out line
and to be honest its only the 5 th time i have put ink into skin and 2nd that i have used colour
and if it turns out not to bad as hard as it was to get to i wouldnt think on some1 else would be any near as hard
but i dont have any real want to do other people there are enough bad tattoos out there lol
tho i am going to touch up the black on russ's arm when the soft cock turns up one day but that is a old ruff job done at a bike run in the uk so i cant fuck it more than it is lol

Ive always bagged my machines and used clip cord covers and i was suprised that when the last tatt i had done professionally (last november) the guy had a cord cover but didnt bag his machine. Neither did the other chick who was workin on the missues. When i quizzed him about it he rekoned if you're getting blood, skin, spray that far from the skin you're doing it seriously wrong, which makes perfect sense now having seen how robmac was butchered..
I still do it out of habit except on the missus as she has her own machines exclusively for working on her. Shes planning out her left sleeve which were gonna start this weekend, watch this space..

Your jap sun leg work turned out fucken awesome, the heavy black outline really finishes it well. Fucken good work man, ill have to come to the east coast and trade work some time if your up for scribbling on others, or being scribbled on.

every time they touch the machince after yr skin there is cross con and i think hep lives for over three weeks out the body or something silly like that. it is however such a small risk but i still think it is good practise unless like u say it is a set up just for one person.
and if that was a shop that did robmac or even just some 1 he paid or well even if it was free fuck he should tell people to stay well the fuck away from them
and in mho if it was a shop they should be reported
if the arn is anywhere as good aas the leg u just did mate it will be fucking tops like i said the green and shade for the 3d effect was spot on
if u every over this way mate at the least stop in for a beer but id be up for that as long as u realise that im fucking long way behind u in abilty lol, my lines still arnt crisp(not bad but i like really crisp outlines) and when this heals ill see if i got better coverage than last time (the blue on his suit). that was all shaded with a 7rs and outlined with 8rl next time i have that big area to do i felt good enough to step up to a 9-14 mag and set liner softer( i run a soft liner as it is 18 back spring ,16 front at around 105 cps thats shader speeds but when i did blood lines in testing just felt better in my skin with my hand and healed best so i think ill stay there) and use rs for tight and mag to smash it cause fuck long time with the round over that much skin there might be a few not full cover because i had enough by the end lol
the design was easy just printed out the one from net found a old copy of the figure from when i 1st did him about 2 yrs ago cut it out and just sat it over the print out where i wanted it and then poped in a few lines to cut to size and traced it all out
i just wished they stay looking that sharp after they healed lol

We dont bag our machines either. They never touch the clients skin & the artist has no need to need to touch it once work has started so its not really an issue! Clip cord bags are a must tho.
