I doubled my money on the other old twat Surt and made just under £1000. I'll be happy to make every other bike an old twat with a return on my money like that, lol.

I'm going to put a single rad on the front Surt perhaps from a fireblade.

I collected my frame today from motorcycle recycle, luvly init!

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01489-20120116-1648.jpg

I measured the swing arm spindle holes on the engine and frame and they are both 20mm so thats a result :)

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01496-20120116-1717.jpg

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01495-20120116-1717.jpg

next I measured the width between the frame. 220mm, but I can chop the bush each side and get it to open up to 250mm.

The rear of the engine where the swing arm pivots is 170mm

So I have 80mm, 40 each side of the engine and between the frame to get a swing arm into.

Next I used a little yellow paint to indicate where I'm going to chop the frame

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01494-20120116-1715.jpg

I have some 34mm 10swg tube on order from a steel supplier, I just have to find someone to put a couple of bends in it for me.

Surt

CBRRRT
17-01-2012, 07:15 AM
That would be cool mate, but I rekon it would cost a fortune in shipping, lol.

I 'm going to get rid of the cradle and make the frame into a lattis
This is a bit crude, but you get the idea behind my thinking

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/framechop.jpg

Removing the cradle will open up the front for the VTR front cylinder, and removing the cross brace and redundant engine mounts will open up the rear.

I will have to replace the cross brace, but to a point that wont get in the way of the rear cylinder.

I'm gonna have to get it checked out mate. There are loads of companies in the UK that build custom frames, so I'll find one near me and get them to check it over before I get it government checked.

Ok, so if you live in the UK and want to do this type of thing then this should help.

First I phoned the DVLA and told them I had brought a cat C insurance write off frame. I asked them if I needed to get the frame checked out by a government inspector before they will give me a document of ownership. They told me all I have to do isfill in a form
(V62) from the post office and they will issue me with the log book. (document of ownership)

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01500-20120117-1807.jpg

Next I asked them if I need to get it checked before it goes on the road. They transfired me to the VOSA department as they were not sure.
The guy at VOSA said the check for a Catagory C insurance write off only applies to cars, and that motorcycles are exempt. He said as long as it has a road tax disc, insurance and a MOT it was good to go.

He also said I can keep the registration plate that came with the frame and there was no need to change it to a Q plate.

The only down side was that the document of ownership would take the makers name of the frame, and although I'm putting a Honda VTR Storm engine in it, the bike will always be a Suzuki Bandit (That is so gey) Rod, lol.

So all in all there wont be any legal issues with what I'm going to do.

nah never heat it up mate just cold and if thin walled (less than 3mm) then stuff it with sand or still better abrasive powder tough as and cork it up real hard then bend on apropriate roller, depends on pipe od

So tonight when I got in I started to chop my £150.00 frame into little bits.

I started be removing the sub frame, so marked it with some masking tape where I want to make my cuts.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01501-20120118-1903.jpg

It was quite easy to chop but the cuts will need a tidy up at a later date.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01502-20120118-1916.jpg

I can see the kg's just dropping off, lol.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01503-20120118-1916.jpg

Next I want to remove the cradle, so more chopping

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01507-20120118-1938.jpg

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01508-20120118-1943.jpg

The Bandit bottom engine mounts had to go as well as the cross brace the shock attaches to. That will get repositioned.

And it now sits on the engine, and the swing arm pivot points on the frame and engine line through.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01510-20120118-2030.jpg

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01514-20120118-2031.jpg

Now I can start to think about the mods to the frame to get the strength back. Tube is on order and on its way ;)

Tonight I decided to clean up some of the chops I did yesterday. the cradle at the bottom had some inserts that had big chunky welds around them

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01519-20120119-2021.jpg

So I spent the evening cleaning them up

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01518-20120119-2018.jpg

Its one of those really time consuming jobs, but all worth it in the end

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01517-20120119-2018.jpg

I went over them with the 4" grinder, then my power file

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01516-20120119-2017.jpg

I think once I've got it to a stage where I'm ready to weld, then I'm gonna get it blasted.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01520-20120119-2022.jpg

Today I finally got the frame to fit the engine and everything lines up really good, so I'm pleased to fuck about that then.

Next I started to make the frame mods and tacked the bottom rail in

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01547-20120128-1418.jpg

I decided the best place for the back of the frame tube to terminate would be in in the clef of the frame.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01549-20120128-1419.jpg

The front of the tube was tacked to the head stock.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01550-20120128-1419.jpg

I need to brace the bottom rail to the top and form some nice strong triangles. To do this I need to cut some saddle joints in the tube.

I held an off cut on the side of the tube

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01554-20120128-1428.jpg

Then marked round it.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01555-20120128-1428.jpg

With my 4" grinder I cut out the saddles

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01556-20120128-1429.jpg

And kept checking the fit on the frame

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01557-20120128-1430.jpg

Then tapped it into place.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01561-20120128-1502.jpg

I wish it was that easy to get modified frames etc registered in OZ. I'm always thinking of what motor would fit in which frame but it all gets too hard when it gets to the legality. i love your work Jon. Your talent with the 4 inch grinder is amazing.

My mate Porky is building an X7 Stroker and been using the welder so I've had to wait to get on, but today I got it back.

Got stuck into my frame again

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01573-20120211-1329.jpg

Before I welded in the vertical strut I used it to space the other side so they are the same

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01574-20120211-1329.jpg

I'm really pleased with the way it went, even though it was a bit of a fucker getting all the angles right to cut.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01575-20120211-1329.jpg

Next I made another vertical strut and Hot Glued it in

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01578-20120211-1401.jpg

Then I popped the frame off the motor and welded the frame up all round

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000 B12Fighter/IMG01579-20120211-1637.jpg

Tomorrow I'll blend the welds and smooth everything off.

why u made em so wide Jon? and i would direct em 40mm lower right to the rombus side, thats how i gunna do in my case

Are you not concerned with the frame warping at all under the pull of fresh welds Jon? Would have thought u'd be much better off building a jig to ensure the frame remains straight while u hot glue the shit out of it...

Good point Lance. There is definite possibility that the frame might have warped while you were welding it up if it was all done at once. You'd be surprised at the heat that is created whilst welding.

Once the tank is on Surt I think the frame will look good from the front. I really like the look of it the way it is, and it fits the pitchure I have in my head.

I tried lots of positions for the tube to terminate at the rear and decided it would lock in nice in the cleff of the frame, then I went about doing my best to make it look like the lower sub-frame strut wher it joins just below.

I've never done a frame before Surt, so I'm making it all up as I go. Right or wrong, its a learning process mate.

It did cross my mind mate, so I tacked everything in, then did short welds rotating around the frame kinda like tightening down the head bolts on an engine to preventing it from warping. Like I said to Surt, I'm on a bit of a learning curve at the moment.

Today I started by getting rid of the mounting bracket on the head stock

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01581-20120212-1349.jpg

Then I went about blending the welds

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01584-20120212-1350.jpg

The contact point at the rear of the new frame lower bar is ment to mirror the point where the lower sub-frame also meets.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01583-20120212-1350.jpg

I'm really pleased with the way its going but there is lots more to do yet.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01586-20120212-1352.jpg

I have to figure out how to pick up the front engine mounts

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01585-20120212-1350.jpg

I have an idea germinating, just have to work out a detail or two.

On another note, If you choose to ignor the safety instructions that come with your power tools, be very carfull if you remove safety guards.

Thanks lads, I've been thinking about the front mounts today and I'm going to run a tube under the carbs with a slight upturn each side to fix to the bottom rail behind the vertical strut. It will do two things, pick up the front of the motor and add a bit of side ways strength to the frame.

Well thats the plan anyway.

There is no way the airbox is going to go on although saying that there is quite a bit of room in there to put some kind of Hi-flo K 'n' N filters. Has anyone seen anything that would fit the bill?
