Tank arrived today, but because its black it really dont show up to well in the photos

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01606-20120223-1924.jpg

I'll take some daylight photos at the weekend, perhaps it will show better then

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01607-20120223-1925.jpg

Its a great shape but there is a minor clearence issue with the carbs.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01614-20120223-1927.jpg

I have a little work to do on it, but a 2007 tank for £60 you'll expect that.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01616-20120223-1939.jpg

I've used a wire brush in my drill to remove the paint and get back to bare metal

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01617-20120223-1945.jpg

I dont have time to start filling the dent tonight but over the weekend I'll get stuck in. It might seem like a lot of extra work buying a damaged tank, but I've found over the years by buying slightly damaged but fixable parts you can save a fortune

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01624-20120227-1911.jpg

As you know from the photo above my tank has a ding in the side. Its quite a bump and in an awkward place to try and push out. I dont have a puller so I'm going to fill the dent instead. Now then, most people I have spoken to say dont fill more than 3mm deep as it will absorb water over time and blow the paint.
So I'm going to try something new I havent done before.

First I made a wooden paddle from a bit of oak I had laying around

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01619-20120223-2005-1.jpg

Then got a tub of tinning paste. Its a flux that contains fine particles of lead

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01625-20120227-1911.jpg

next I painted the paste onto the tank

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01626-20120227-1912.jpg

and applied heat from an open flame

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01627-20120227-1918.jpg

The flux is an acid and when hot cleans the surface of tne steel alowing the lead contained within it to stick forming a base to stick bigger bits of lead to

a wipe with a paper towel and its ready to go

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01628-20120227-1919.jpg

Now it just a case of loading it up with lead, apply heat and moving it around with the oak paddle.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01629-20120227-1921.jpg

Its gonna get ugly, but it will be fine in the end

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01632-20120227-1928.jpg

Now more heat and lead

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01630-20120227-1921.jpg

once its loaded up I started to file it back into shape

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01633-20120227-1936.jpg

Then added more lead

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01634-20120227-1947.jpg

And so on untill I got it filled

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01636-20120227-2041.jpg

Then went over it with alu oxide to flatten it right off

Its still going to need a tiny amount of filler but just a wipe rather than a big dollop of the stuff.

http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01637-20120227-2049.jpg

I quite enjoyed that.

Remember, if you are going to have a go at this be careful as you are dealing with malten metal, and that shit burns.

hey Jon itd be a piece of piss mate if ur keen to invest in it a coupla grands and hours of work and studying for a starter's level turbo bike, u probably wont make from it a fast and fat profit but u gunna have whole lotta fun and experience so in u go! u'll have to get urself all those things that i was buying for 2 years one by one, like a hair dryer, intercooler, ic piping, blow off valve, boost related fuel pressure regulator, a wide band oxygen sensor with controller, bigger injectors and fuel pump, a fully programmable ecu; u'll have to fab an intake manifold and turboheader, ur gunna have a lot of ally weldin work if u aint gunna make the intake manifold from a steel sheet with an arc welder, wire up it all, tune it and be proud
dependin on wat bhp ur after i would say a mid size turbine is ur option like garrett t25 thru t35, mitsubishi t03 thru t04, ihi rh...4 thru rh...55, try to get a ball bearin and water cooled one or u can build a twin turbo set up with smaller turbines. read Corky Bell's Maximum boost, go to turbo and diy efi forums then become a turbo guru

Surt
29-03-2012, 05:14 AM
sure it will but from my poor memory rebuilding the frame cost harry a fortune, i'd rather cut of the bottom part of the b12 frame with pivot mounts and make new lower engine mounts a tad higher, so that the swinga would be connected just to the powerplant

CBRRRT
29-03-2012, 07:40 AM
Got in to night and decided to take the bull by the horns and get chopping on the frame again. My mate Harry from the land down under built Banbusa, and had his frame widened to take the busa swing arm, so, thats what im gonna do too.
First I marked the frame to mirror the angle of the lower sub-frame mount
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01689-20120328-1958.jpg
And then the tube where the shock mounts.
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01690-20120328-1958.jpg
Then got stuck in with my grinder.
Once off I cut the bushes welded to the frame back to give me a bit more room
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01691-20120328-2013.jpg
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01692-20120328-2034.jpg
The only consern I had was leaving enough to tighten the spindle bolt and nut down to.
There was a good 8mm thickness still in the bush so no worries there.
I got the arm and right side of the frame mounted to the motor with the vfr spindle, its about 30mm longer than the Bandit spindle and thats a bonus.
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01696-20120328-2101.jpg
Next I got the left side back on
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01705-20120328-2118.jpg
The left side swing arm bush was sticking out to far and needed cutting to length
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01695-20120328-2058.jpg
now its starting to come together and I havent had to do anything to the arm other than shorten a bush.
The lower right side of the frame is now offset by about 15mm and I'm going to slip a plate between the two sections and weld them to it
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01706-20120328-2118.jpg
Then I'll weld in some plate steel to improve the lines and add strength
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01709-20120328-2123.jpg
I'll do the same to the under side of the plate too
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/IMG01708-20120328-2123.jpg
Just need to get the welder back from my mate and I can start hot glueing it all back again.
I'm happy with the way I have chosen to get past the problem and when the frame is finished and powdercoated I think the 15mm offset will hardly be noticed.

At last, I've got the mig welder back, so I've been fabricating.
I need a point to pick up the front engine mounts so I coped out a tube to weld across the frame
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/20120602_185952.jpg
Next I cut out and drilled the lugs I'll weld to the cross member
IMG]http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/20120602_190013.jpg[/IMG]
I also removed the shock mounts from the lower half of the frame
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/20120602_185916.jpg
and made strengthening plates to weld to the front and rear of the new section that runs under the top rail
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/20120602_190130.jpg
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/20120602_190353.jpg

CBRRRT

Got lots done today, I started by tack welding the strengthening plated in
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151209.jpg
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151214.jpg
Then tacked in the new cross bar that will pickup the front motor mounts
http://[IMGi995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151222.jpg
I'll weld the lugs to it later but for now they are not an issue.
Next I welded blanking off plates to the sides where I cut out the bandit cross bar.
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151516.jpg
I still need them because the tank rubbers sit on them
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151529.jpg
I then welded in the boss on the lower shock rail that widens the frame for the VFR800 arm to slot in.
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151309.jpg
Tacked up the side of the frame too
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_151436.jpg
Its starting to look and feel a bit more ridged now.
Next I'm gonna do the tank mount.

The frame is a gen2 and tank gen3 bandit, and the rear mounts are a bit different, so I had to make a mount.
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120603_153312.jpg
I made a template first the used it to cut my steel plate

I drilled out the holes I marked from the frame and tank, then tack welded a couple of captive nuts that will hold the tank to the plate.

I got through quite a lot today and I'm pleased with the progress I've made

I did a bit of blending to the part of the frame I widened to get the 800 arm in
I started by tacking a plate in place
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120604_111146.jpg
Then cut small infills to the ends and welded them in then tided them up with my grinder.
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120604_113709.jpg
once they were in I welded up the first plate and blended it with my grinder
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/CBRRRT/VTR1000%20B12Fighter/20120604_120115.jpg
Next I went to the underside and did another blend, although making sure I left room for any travel on the swing arm

And that takes me one more step closer :-)

So, this evening I made the motor mounts. The rear of the motor is held in place by the swingarm pivot bolt but the front has nothing, so I welded in a cross member to weld a couple of fixing lugs to. Then I fabricated the motor mounts that bolt to the cylinders.

the top lugs sit right over the motor mounts

When I figure out the angle I want the motor to sit in relation to the frame I'll make a couple of tie rods, the length of which will determin the angle.

Seems like ages since you've been around mate. Good to see so much progress - you haven't been slacking, that's for sure!

No time to slack off Si, there is always something to do fitting out the extension to my workshop I've been building

The electrex are all in and working now, I have an extra 7 double sockets plus an outside socket.
Strip light over the bike bench I made from a 4 x 4 fence post, 4 x 2 side rails, and a sheet of ply with a scaffold board ramp.

The cost of those pump up bike lifts is nuts, and I'd rather spend the money on my bike builds.

Down lighters over my new reversable grinding station. 2 grinders, 1 with rough and medium stones, 1 with wire wheel and polishing mop, mounted on ply and bolted to a short Acro prop that is concreted into the ground slab.

I also built an assembley bench down one side that also has my tv/dvd to keep me company. My compressor is housed under the bench and the moisture filter is on the back wall.

The walls and roof are all insulated, as is the old part of the workshop so its nice and warm in winter and cool in summer.

Poppet has been keeping me busy in the big house decoraing as well mate.

"Slacking off"

Nope, dont know the meaning of the word, lol.
