View Full Version : New Project - Piranha Buggy.

I've been thinking about a bigger project that involves lots of welding and fabbing for a while now, and recently I decided on a mini buggy. After checking out some forums, I decided to start with the local product, so I ordered the plans and a frame kit for one of these as a Christmas present for myself-

http://www.eziplans.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=17.

They look ok stock, but I've found some that have been nicely modded (more round tube and nerf bars etc)

http://www.minibuggy.net/forum/projects-progress/14929-robs-piranha-build.html

and

http://www.minibuggy.net/forum/projects-progress/15342-i-bought-pirahna-roller-its-wicked-cool-2.html

The Edge recommend 500-750cc moteurs (although they list 1000s and 1100s in the suitable moteur list).

I reckon the CBR600RRRR in my kart would be perfect...but I reckon a ZX12R moteur would be even perfecter although it will require a beefy rear end with CVs etc. I guess it all depends what I come home from the auctions with.

Of course, just after ordering the kit, I found this little beauty, only spoiled by the likely shipping costs-

http://z15.invisionfree.com/MINI_LITES/index.php?showtopic=39.

I have 2 years to finish it or I lose a $100 bet with Ben.

P.S- before anyone starts
1 I'm waiting for another GSX 1400 donor bike to supply an engine for my write off.
2 If I get a 12R, I can use the forks etc to register my ZX12 dragbike one day
3 The RTA have fucked up the whole engineering certification scheme in NSW, so I can't get anyone to look at the ZX10 until the engineers know what's going on. Worst case scenario, it gets taken to Brisbane and registered there.

I'm hoping mine looks something like this-

the reason he changed the plans is because they way the are they tend to bump steer and can be a bitch handling wise
all you need to do is change the way the A arms are mounted on the front. instead of them mounting them on the same pivot you need to set them up like you would have them on a car .so the wheel travels straight up and down ...i hope that makes sense

Great stuff , I used to play with the Seymour trike and Odyssey club. They mostly ran home build/designed buggies with all kinds of motors from cr500's to 900 firblades 1300 busa motor powered thing was in the pipeline when I left the club. There is a local bloke I've met a few times over the years who builds race cars to order from Toolamba (just up the road from shep) who has put together a few buggies for people based on 1300 busa with 4wd hovering around the 450 kg mark wet one was turboed. Both held several motorkana records over here and NZ.

I'd be taking a close look at your chosen Pirana and chasing up someone with a compleated frame in your neck of the woods , let me be delicate (your a whole lota man) and the pirana is snug with a 6 foot medium build bloke. You might want to do a squeeze test on the standard frame before you commit the plans too steel. The frame should be an easy streach to be a little more accomodating . I have been caught out and I'm only 178 cm and 100kg .

The main reason I got outa the buggy thing was finding somewhere fun and legal to run it , in the end sold it all off and pulled the pin when back to bikes.

see what i mean here big fella you need to separate these 2 A arms and mount them evenly if that makes sense

Hey Rod,

I've got the plans, plus the double A arm rear plans and the double A arm front plans they have on the website. I'm pretty sure the double A arm front plans are designed to do what you said.

Did you have a look at the second link at minibuggy.net?

Somehow he's worked out how to add a trailing/control arm to the the double A arm rear setup. Looks hella cool, but the maths about arcs of movement could be boggling.

Ta for the heads up remoho.

I've ordered a kit of parts- oversized to start and I'm planning on making the buggy fit me. I might make something that I'm too scared to drive but I won't make anything I can't fit in.

If you are too scared to drive the fucker let me know and i'll race it in the Fink Desert Race for ya. I don't give a shit how stupid you'd have to be to drive it. I've always been dumb enough to try stupid shit one more time.

Oh and Rod I'll take a set of those plans if you have a spare?

We had bloke messing with 5 link rear ends , if you want to see a good one in action look at mid 90's losi Rc car stuff . Hook up alot more power than you'd think over a double A arm setup , think ladder bar drag launches on dirt with 2 foot travel ! Well worth the effort for racing , for play time stick with double A arm simple (cheap) tough and easy to repair !

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m591/redmohawk1/DSC_0422.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m591/redmohawk1/DSC_0420.jpg

A double A arm front is a big improvement on the fixed A arm unit on the pirana and not alot more work for a big gain in handeling, with skinny tyres and sand not worth it but for high speed on packed dirt def improvement. Must for racing of any kind.

11-01-2012, 11:09 AM
Be aware Richard, that the classifieds are full of unfinished Pirahna/Edge style buggies & their associated excuses and/or tales of woe, I hope you're not gunna be one of those guys. ;)

Also, if you sell the Kart before I've driven it I will kick you in the nuts, same goes if you take the moteur out.

Get the VFR*, a 12 will never get traction & a V4 exhaust note is the sweetest sound in the world... 'cept maybe for Pussy...

Have you heard that after a while, people start to look like their dog? That Staffy is beautiful so there may be hope for you yet.

*Unless you're planning to race it of course, then go for a 12 motor + Turbo + Supercharger + Nitrous Oxide + Nitro Methane + chrome 4" exhaust tip + Energy Polariser.

My mate built this around a subaru turbo 2L boxer motor. He also built a smaller buggy with a home made independant rear end. It had a shaft at the pivot point of the swingarms and had 2 chain drives to each wheel (if that makes any sense). I'll see if I can get him to email me some photo's.
