hey all, im thinking of fitting 4 small pod filters to my R6 and doing away with the air box, something like this:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/pods.jpg

but im wondering if it woild breath ok?

the only reason i want to do it is to free up some space under the tank, for wiring.

what r your thoughts? is it worth it? and will it breath ok?

In my opinion you are a lot better off with the Airbox mate ...I would have thought that pods on a bike like that would be shit house due to the heat of the motor rising around them ....but hey I have been wrong before

yeah the heat was also a concern, i could duct some fresh air in, but the more i think about it,
the more i agree with you Rod.

Arnt individual pods even worse to tune properly than ur BMC/K&N style twin pod set up?
Im with rod though, couldnt see it doing anygood on a bike like urs mate! Keep the airbox n get a hi-flow air filter instead!

Your spot on with the individual pods there lance and I reckon a high flow filter is the go aswell if you go BMC make sure you get the right one as they have 2 types ...one is basically a stock replacement the other is the high flow one

ive got these pods on my gsxr1100w,,had to rejet ,was a pain ,,they actually suffer when riding in heavy ,rain,,keep the air box brother ,,just buy a high flow filter for it

dont bother with the pods, they wont work....you need a sealed air box to create a vacuum in the carby.
no vacuum and the slide wont lift...unless its injection of course

ditto
the kat has those cheap pods and even with regular oiling they had the rain
the twin setups are better than the 4 ones i think
if you are worried about heat a simple plate will make a good heat sheild

you wouldnt be the first person to sacrifice a little performance to get a clean result
i'd go for it, remember your carb settings and you can always revert back

out of interest what size pods do you need
i have a spare set of unused ones here

With Injection pods are less of a hassle, but keep the intake runner length about the same to reduce wave inversion. (intake tuning) With carbs don't assume anything same rule applys try and keep intake tuning the same (distance from carb mouth to back wall of pod should be the same distance as carb mouth to rear wall of air box or filter which ever is closer) and Fuel main jet idle jet and needle will prob need changing but use a wide band oxygen sensor or get it tuned by someone who knows what there up to.

If you like the look n sound pods are cool but you will most prob loose power on carbs unless you spend alot of time on it. Mine rode just fine in the rain with pods, just dont slow down and alls fine :)

Nice one mono

i used to have a tuning guide for carbs laying around but lost it
was a couple of pages long
basically said "take for test run, check for......." then you would ride around a bit
and then it would help you figure out settings etc

anyone got something like that?

Not true, the slides still work and quite well.

I put twin pods on my bike when it was N/A and the AFR went from 12.3:1 (airbox) to 14.8:1 (pods)
After being on the dyno and a rejet it was fine and was better than before.

The Stoichiometric (big word:cool:) air-fuel ratio says the AFR should be 14.6:1 for optimum burn
You will blow your motor up at this ratio so the place to aim for is 12.5:1 to 13:1

Like Red has said, "Fuel main jet idle jet and needle will prob need changing (UP a size or two) but use a wide band oxygen sensor or get it tuned by someone who knows what there up to. "

Yes I have a cracker .......It's all in my head but i'll drag out the hard copy , I know exactly where it is (under ten years of crap)..... mmmm where did i put all that crap ?

Stay away from pod type filters on the R6, they run well with a free flowing panel filter in the sirbox, but run crap with pods, especially on CV carbs. You can run a set of FCR or TDMR downdraught flatslides without the airbox, but CV carbs do not work well without in this case. Injection is a little better but will need remapping to suit, and depending upon the amount of 'ramair' effect supplied by the airbox you could lose rideability higher up the rpm range by ditching the airbox.

I've had OK experience's with them on the older stuff.
Kat's, Z1000, Z650, CB750 etc but modern carbs and
injection and very different (and larger) air box's with
ram air seem to have moved the goal posts.

yeah agreee ^^^ older bikes wks really well and lot easier to tune on a newer bike if u want to do it go with the double ones and like the others have said heat shield is a easy fix for the heat that ur worried about and when u by bods spend a little extra on the good ones it makes a difference and as for the rain well compromise is a evil master but as long as ur happy with the result ....

give up the pods and fit a turbo solves so many issues :D

Okay, I've been doing some digging and I've found my hard copy of Carburetor Tuning Guidelines.

To all people out there with carburetors IMO this is one of the most important pages you will read.

Feel free to make a hard copy and keep it close to your tool box. It will come in handy.
