Cheers Rod...long way to go...just ordered tubing for seat rails and working on a mould for rear mudguard.
Also going to make a custom front guard to suit the more angular look...prob do both in carbon

Cool. Good sheds and the right tools really help hey?

you can never go wrong with a good shed and the right tools si
but at the end of the day only thing most people wouldnt have is the oxy and is the only reason that russ didnt do it at home
mr azeeal has the the propper three wheel pipe roller but wa is a bit far to go lol
its great fun even if it is a stinking yammy-ha lol

Any idea if the steel is the same after the heat ? By that I mean if you went to the trouble of using dom tube (I assume for strength) is it as strong after the heat that you used to bend it ?

I spoke to a drag race chassis builder and followed his advice

Nice, from what I understand it's all about the temp, too hot and the steels fucked, too cold the same.....

any time you heat up steel you anneal it but yes the temp is the key and also the rate at witch you cool it
the load on the part we did was never going to be a high so some annealing wasnt a prob
to hot and yes the grain structure becomes a prob and to cold on a bend like this means where and the form of the bend is comperrised
rule of thumb is always just under or just on cherry red and then the way u cool is the way to control things
if u guench to fast on some metals you need to reheat to a piont then let air cool because you have in fact harden the metal
air cooling can aneal to much at times as well
there are some great coulor chats and expantions for all this

i never thought of sand filled useing the pipe bender instead of a tube bender good find mr large
russ wanted to use a set radius to suit his intended gaurd center line so a tube roller is the best way to bend to a non standard radius but really this was that easy it wasnt a prob just a bit time heavy

a lot of exhaust shops use this method aswell for good bend so they dont have to use mandrell dends ,its an old speedway trick aswell!!

Watched a bloke years back use dry sand packed into exaust tube , and an oxy to make headers for a 302win to fit into a corolla. Had to repack the sand as he went but tube all stayed round in some tight bends. I was impressed with how easy he made it look (I've tryed it at work , not as easy as it looks)

I just plugged one end, filled with fine sand (heated in the oven to 100% dry it), kept tapping to settle the sand and then plugged the end up.
Used a solid bar to hammer the wooden plugs in deeper..was suprised... I got another 1-2" of compression on the sand

Would using high pressure oil (porta power) might be an option instead of sand ? With just a tube bender and no heat, would make pressure adjustment easy enough.

Don't know mate....sand was quick clean and easy
