Hi all, thought i'd post a few pics of my 1st attempt at building a fighter. it startted life as a 98 RRW, When i got it fairings, exhaust, front discs, front master cylinder&brake lever were all missing so it was ideal for what i wanted.
Frame just after i'd stripped everything off it

I've been influenced by cbrrrt with this build, so started looking for an R1 back end, which i eventually found

Cheers guys, been into my bikes for 30 odd years but always had standard bikes just rode & cleaned them. This came about as a result of being badly injured in a rta 5 yrs ago, not having a bike for that long was driving me mad. Thought if i got a project it might help me get my sanity back.Started this back in Feb this year but have been posting on another blade forum mainly, but now i've found ASF thought i'd put pics on here aswell, so its not built as quick as the pics are goin on here!

Got the chain on and lined up, blade originally had a 530 chain and the vfr had a 525, so the 2 wouldn't work together, did a bit of research and found the early blades (upto '96) had 525 chains so all i did was get a pre'96 front sprocket and used the vfr chain problem solved. Will get a new chain when its ready for the road but for now the old ones good enough for set up etc

Well been a while, camera broke so had to get it repaired hence the wait, but here's a few more pics,
subframe brackets fitted

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00362.jpg
Thanks to cbrrrt for the dimensions he posted for these
Also 'borrowed' his idea for running the rear brake line through the sssa

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00360.jpg

Then i got thinking about where to mount the rectifier as it needs a flat metal surface, thought about this 'x' shaped brace
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00366.jpg
then thought of this
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00367.jpg
then i ended up with this
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00368.jpg
result, me thinks. As its copper it should disipate the heat quickly

Yes its my 1st build attempt, as i said earlier have had bikes for years but only ever stripped em down, cleaned em and put em back together. So after writing off my '05 1000rr repsol in an arguement with a tractor ( which i lost!) in Aug 06, i've not had a bike since. Very little money dictated what i could afford so found the RRW looking very sorry for itself
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/KGrHqQOKjoE6WIlI-wBOvl3mBbw_12.jpg
This is more or less what it looked like apart from no tail plasics or exhuast.
That was 12 months ago, so its getting there.

Done a bit more today,
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00372.jpg
decided i need to cover the gap between the R1 tail plastics and the frame, so i found some old perspex and made this
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00371.jpg
Then with a hot air gun did this
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00373.jpg
and ended up with this
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00374.jpg
Then had a go at fibreglassing, think its the first time since i left school:o
http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00375.jpg
have to see what happens when it sets!!. plan is to go over it with filler and smooth it into the original tail section. Have done both sides now so hopefully tomorrow i can get the filler on

Quite pleased with how its looking for a 1st time attempt at anything like this. Not sure yet about the front end where it meets the tank but its deffinately nearer than before i started. Need to get some more foam to cover the front sides i've extended, then think about re-covering it, whether i have a go myself or take it somewhere & get it done professionally. got the original off in one piece but have either got to make a complete new one or extend it to cover the longer sides and where it meets the tank. Hopefully get it sanded and fitting better 2moro

Just wanted to give you a heads up. I tried many years ago to join fibreglass to plastic. It looked great and did the job well ....until I rode it a few times. The vibration from the engine and road made the two crack apart again. Something to do with different densities or resonationor something. The main difference was that mine was an extension to a tail piece which was on full display, but with this it will be hidden so you may be fine. Just wanted to let you know in case it seems to start to flap after a few rides, although this is really to shape something rather an be on display, so as I said, you'll probably be fine.

I had a few drama's trying to fibreglass to moulded plastic (seat base)
I cut a few chunky holes through the seat base so the fibreglass had
huge potential to hook onto it not just bond to it. In my case it wasnt
on view.

Thanks gix11, i made some perspex extensions first then drilled through the seat base an joined the two together with some self tapping screws, then ground off the screw ends that were sticking out, then covered it all with fibreglass matting & resin before applying the filler so i'm hoping it should hold together. decided against trying to make a new seat cover myself so have taken it a local classic car trimmer who's going to do it for me, 2-3weeks though due to his workload so just gotta wait

Just need to cut the pipe in half at 45 degrees, before putting it all back together.

Lookin good mate!
Only thing I can see is with the re-cover on ur seat. Did u have a go urself or did a pro do it? The back part looks sloppy IMO, its not snug around the foam/seat base. With all the effort ur putting into this build, little things like that can really let the overall look dwn. Might be something to think about. Everything else has come up mint!

Had no work yesterday, so went in garage and cracked on with the cans,

wrapped the old wadding round the new pipe

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00402.jpg

put it into can, packed wire wool all round it then riveted the end cap back on, looks awesome compared to the original

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00403.jpg

then did the second one

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00406.jpg

well chuffed with the end result especially as the whole lot came in around £30.
got a 1mtr length of perforated pipe £18 delivered from these people

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Custom-Exhaust-Parts?_trksid=p4340.l2563

re-used the original wadding bought 2 packs of wire wool & 12 rivets, the pre-cut kits on e-bay come in £60-£80 (inc shipping from usa) happy days

Never had it ( or heard it) running since i bought it 12 months ago. managed to borrow a standard can from a mate, as the link pipe to the R1 cans isn't done yet, thought it would be better than an open 4 into 1. Charged the battery, filled it with new oil and new coolant, petrol in, turned the key and ....... it did actually try to fire but apart from a lot of popping and backfiring nothing much happened. Took number 1 plug out and checked for a spark, got a spark so not that, closer inspection of ht leads revealed i had got nos 1 &2 on the wrong way round DER!!!! still it has been in bits for 12 months ( thats my excuse http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/950996.gif ) changed them over and tried again...... SUCCESS it runs!!!!http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/760950.gif http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/760950.gif http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/57391.gifwell happy!!! after a bit of fiddling with choke/tickover speed left it running for a few minutes keeping a look out for oil/water leaks. looks like i got to replace the gasket on timing cover ( slight weep) thats all. temp gauge started to climb till it reached 104 degrees and then the fan cut in, so all in all a good day. Thats a big relief as now i know i've not got to spend loads on rebuilding the motor. Got to sell the original back end and spare front end i've got now, that should fund the new handlebars & front brake lines, then paint it

Not done much lately due to lack of funds but have managed to get some risers sorted, these arrived today

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00445.jpg

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00446.jpg

Want to use a different front mudguard to the standard one but can't decide what yet, so in the meantime thought i might a play with the original to see if i could get a better look/effect,

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00439.jpg

took a radius of the front

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00441.jpg

and then got the jigsaw out

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00442.jpg

and ended up with this

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00443.jpg

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00444.jpg

Not to sure yet as what i think other than i like it better than the original

Think the next job is to let my mate ( who made the top yoke) have it back and machine the holes for the risers, cause i've only got a hand drill and want to make sure they go through dead square. Must get some bars soon!!!

metalback
09-04-2012, 01:05 AM

Hopefully get the yoke drilled next week then can get the risers and bars on, then can get switches fitted, which will let me start sorting the wiring out ( shortening and relocating ) at last http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_smile.gif

metalback
18-04-2012, 06:01 AM
Well, managed to get the yolks drilled and the risers fitted

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00450.jpg

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00451.jpg

then it was time to get rid of the clip-ons at last

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00452.jpg

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00455.jpg

Should now be able to start thinking about longer clutch/throttle cables, think its time to suspend the front end from the garage roof and see what happens when its on full lock side to side and whether or not the cables are long enough. then measure the distance from the master cylinder to the calipers and get the brake lines ordered from Venhill (same as the rear one)
Now that the bars are finally fitted i know how high the switches are, so can start shortening the wiring loom

Couldn't wait to hear what it sounded like, stuck the tank on temp and wheeled it out the garage turned the key pressed the button and NOTHING!! completely dead. http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_evil.gif Had got neutral/oil lights, horn + indicators ok, checked the side stand that was up, pulled the clutch in still nothing so feeling really p****d off wheeled it back in the garage and spent the next 2 hours going thru all the wiring everything seemed to be okay http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/154836.gif then eventually found 1 of the wires to the kill switch inside the r/h handlebar switch had come off, so now need to solder that back on and hopefully that should sort it. Guess i might hear it run 1 day!! http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/950996.gif

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00531.jpg

Then placed clocks for effect

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00534.jpg

Got to make a bracket to hold clocks, going to mount it on the underside of the top yoke i think. Any comments on mounting the clocks welcome, would like a small digital speedo but due to cost thats got to wait a bit longer
Also, have now got the wire in the kill switch soldered back on and fired her up, sounds amazing thru the moded cans http://r25.imgfast.net/users/2514/84/30/45/smiles/890314.gif

Found an old top yoke from my 1st RRR that was cracked where the ignition barrel fits and it got me thinking. After a bit more thinking, out came the angle grinder!

The start of the headlight brackets

Goin to see mate who made the top yoke and get him to make a pair the same as these but with longer sides to fit onto the side brackets of the headlight, something abit like this

Dropped off the headlight bracket patterns yesterday , also asked him to make me a bracket for the clocks while he's at it.
so should get them back in a couple of weeks or so, depends how busy he is as to when he can get them done

Cheers. I've seen something very like those on another aussie site, at about the same price as bikermart. I'll have a troll of e-bay and see what I can find.

Thought i'd make a start on the footrest plates i got made, while i'm waiting for the headlight brackets, so started polishing again!

http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m545/12861/DSC00547.jpg

then eventually got them done and fitted

Makes the riding position more comfortable for me, being slightly lower it takes the pressure of my pelvis/hip which i broke a few years ago
