Hi Folks,

So there is a fighter scene after all. Get in!!

Anyway, its looking I am QLD bound in 2009, so another mad pom to join in on the fun!

More than likey going to be based in and around S/E Brisbane area, not sure exactly where as yet.

Current bikes in the shed are...

1979 GSX1100 ET (Finished Fighter)
1978 CB750 F2 (Bufty bike)
1979 XS1100 Shafty (For cruising and taking the Mrs out)
1986 GPZ1000 (Fighter work in prgress)

I am also into my old Fords and so am most definately bringing my two Escorts with me. But along with them I at least wanted to bring the barking mad GSX.

But a mate tells me I will have heaps of hassle getting rego and the bike on the orad? Something about the government being ran by Nannies I think he said?

My questions to you folks is this... Shall I bring or shall I leave? Is it really that difficult to get a modified bike on the road?

Cheers for now
Dave...

It will be difficult but there are ways or loopholes, so to speak.
The main issue is the lack of a factory "Compliance Plate" and registration history here in OZ. There are people here who can help you around these issues, though.
Most of the laws are to deter theft and rebirthing, which has become rife. The Gov has made a lot of hoops you have to jump through.

It's also different from state to state and I think QLD is one of the better states to register with.

Do a bit of a search in the forums because there was someone else recently from the UK trying to do the same thing and asking the same questions. Good luck with it.

G'day mate and welcome,
Very basically the Compliance and roadworthies are like stricty UK MOT tests.
The compliance makes sure it meets aussie standards...headlight points the left side, 4 indicators etc.
On the roadworthy side...must of us know a 'friendly' tester...;)
You will get charged import duty based on the 'estimated value'...Could you dismantle the bike so it becomes 'parts' ?
The advantage in Qld (and Vic but the weathers crap) is that you only need to rw it once and then as long as you keep up the rego you never need another test. So theoretically 'Bob' could rego his nice legal stock bike and then modify it...;)

I didn't think you paid duty on vehicles when emigrating?

welcome mate ..youll love it up there [get air con on evrything]you do pay duty and its 20% or THEIR estimated value as the Escorts arent usually imported here you might have problems, to get round it import em as spares ie take the engine out
..i take it their XRs or older if their 90's dont bother cos its the same shape as the Laser
btw i used to work at Dagenham and im looking into importing some XRs to sell to the restricted youngsters here . i do know of a local girl whos just imported an XR4i so its possible

Cheers lads. I used to live in NZ so am used to all the hassles you get, they are pretty similar in what is required. If not more so! It is easier with older bikes, the one I want to bring is the 79 GSX by the way. It has no indicators just now, dont need them on older bikes here. And also has a Harris exhaust. Also braided brake and breather lines. These are really the only three problems I may have? With older vehicles you dont need to pay duty on import by the way. Been doing some reading.

I will dig out some pictures and post them up today. If you lot can have a look and point out any "issues" I may need to get passed off by my friendly WOF man!

Cheers for now
Dave...

Cheers by the way! I cant take credit for this bike however. It was built by a now good mate. He odes wonders with old ET's. And likes a drink!

You'll need braided lines with the lil' yellow ADR thing on it.
Not sure if the screw together ones are legal here.

Jockney Rebel
27-11-2008, 08:19 PM
russ the screwy ones arent strickly legal i get away with it cos ive got a licence to make em and i argued that since i was qualified to make em and the pass all the aircraft ,army, air force and navy requirements why are they illegal the guy signed the report and told me to fuk off lol

if you have owned the bike for more than 2 years you dont pay duty )you can bring the bike inn as a personal import which does not need a compliance plate
but thee bike has to be inspected by an engineer (cost me $120 in 2000)
and then you send papers to canberra and stuff around and they issue it a personal import plate once that is done you just need to register it.
Sharky is right they want the braided lines to have an aussie sticker on them but mine nevr and when I told him that I had been useing them of years he let it through.

Sweet bike :D and welcome to the site and Brissy :D:D

Cheers all. I will just bite the bullet and bring this one over. I can always work on the road legal stuff at a later date. Even if I just swap the hoses over it should be sweet.

Its actually 12 months ownership for personal import, but this does not apply for older vehicles. So sorted on that front.

I will tie in with a few Brisbane folks when I get myself sorted I reckon. Best to have some connections beofre starting the whole process?

I have a heap of old cars, but will sell most of them. The two I will bring are my babies. They have already been from teh Uk to NZ and back again! Going to try again. These are a Mk1 RS1600 BDA and a Mk2 Mexico YB Cosworth. The Mk2 is going to be the biggest hassle, its got £2000 worh tof braided lines in it, doh!!!

Cheers for the welcomes. I am stuck offshore at work just now so will get mor einto the site on my time off. I keep checking back in though.

Cheers...

hey big dave ,i got my jap import complianced in bris for $100 so get a list of people that do it from the MAIN DOADS DEPT . you have to take it round to his place otherwise he charges to come to your place-your bike looks fairly stock to a non motorcycle person so it you should piss it in . whatever suits another quote was $700-1100 so he was canned , tell your missus no
more weeks of bleak drissly weather trying to get the washing dry,haa i've been to england and i
could'nt stand the weather -ken

your cars will be easy as you have owned them for over 12 months, so therefore the usual compliance laws (called SEVS here) will not apply to them. you must also provide proof of ownership for the past 12 months (in japan that means rego paper, insurance paper, parking space ownership, and jap de reg certificate)
The people to chase up regarding compliancing cars/bikes is called DOTARS.
the have a website, if i can remember it i will let you know.

Welcome Dave.

Im another Pommie, In SEQ / South Brissy,
Got a ET in my toy box too, but not quite as flash as yours.

UK and AU both have their good points, its popular on here
to slag off the UK but it really is swings and roundabouts.
Its which suits you. I went back last year and had a great time,
going back in 2 weeks again. Doesn't suit me to live there though.

If you read the letter of the law, in theory get spotted with a
short rear guard 3 times and you could lose the bike, in reality
guys are running around with Turbo's, NOS kits, race pipes, etc.
Check out some of the members bikes. I could show you several bikes
with major modified or repaired frames that have never seen an inspector. Work it out....;)
