I have a blue tongue for the kids that my brother got when it was about 6 or 7cm big. Now its about a foot and a half. More like a dog than a lizard.
But if you guys are looking to buy reptiles, my brother and hits mates are always selling something. Thats what they do every fucking day

Maybe some of you knowledgable snake geezers can tell me what this snake is that I nearly stepped on last night? He was hanging out under my car as I was fixing the stereo and I missed him by inches. He didn't seem too bothered. It hid under the front step for a bit, yawned, then fucked off. Quite a cool snake actually, even though he did scare the crap out of me for the first few seconds....

I was planning on getting a snake, made up an enclosure and all then moved to Canberra found out the have a stupid rule where you have to have something else for two years or some shit before you can own a snake so I now have a Blue Tongue (Lizard that is).

i spose im being a little bit protective, but as a rat breeder i surely hope you dont feed your snakes live rats or mice.

dont get me wrong, i love snakes and im aware of the food chain etc, but feeding a live animal to another domestic animal is illegal, and cruel. :( not only that the snake could be very seriously injured by the bite of a rat (just ask weasel about how much his finger hurt when one of my boys thought he was food) and no one wants that.

Ive always loved diamond pythons and the 3 metre carpet pythons that were under the house at my grandparents farm, and having grown up around the deadly breeds (i was dropped as a child next to a red bellied black twice, and had to take a trek across a river to find another route up to the house when a death adder blocked the path, oh and brown snakes in a chicken coop dont leave much behind) i respect and admire the snakes of Australia.

scotty mac

Na i use live guinea pigs the squeal BIG time.[:0].

jus kindin i use defrosted rats. but a friend does feed his 12ft carpet guinea pigs live n defrosted, he said they make lots o noise.

Merlyn
19-09-2008, 01:49 PM
guinea pigs have less personality than rats... rats are intelligent creatures. frozen and bred for the purpose of food is fine by me.

scotty mac
19-09-2008, 02:09 PM
guinea pigs are no good for snake anyhow there too fatty.

Merlyn
19-09-2008, 05:09 PM

Does anyone know if you're allowed to own green tree snakes? And where you can get them?

Jazdiver
19-09-2008, 09:27 PM
It's a coastal carpet python " morelia spilota" I think. Used to breed several different species when I was younger, managed to incubate and bring into the world over 150 of them. 10 year old boys wanted them instead of kittens and puppies. You've never seen a pet shit like a 12 foot python who eats rabbits, makes dog shit look like maltesers.

Got 2 Turtles, had lots of frogs but rid of them.
My daughters birthday is next month the big 13,since she was 2 years old she has begged me for a snake, The plans was we would get lizards and see how we went, then move up to a snake But after so long of putting it off it looks like I’m gonna have to come thro with a damn snake
So u guy’s seem to know a bit what should I get? Keep in mind I’m sure I will have to help look after it, my brother had pet snakes lots in our younger days n I loved to handle them, but I have become a wimp these days (why do u think I put off getting 1 for so long)
To quote Daytona “ I want a real snake not some little worm”
Any advice?

Jazdiver
19-09-2008, 09:31 PM
Go a childrens python, fully grown at 3 feet, and will be content to eat mice all it's life, unlike the carpets that you have to switch over to rats at 2yo. Little mouths and teeth that don't hurt when you get bitten unlike some of the carpets that can get upto 8feet. Two types of childrens python, childreni and spotted, a two year old spotted would make the perfect first snake.

I keep and breed snakes. Everything from Childrens Pythons to Inland and Coastal Taipans. I am a reptile demonstrator and Snake Catcher around Gladstone(Licenced by QPWS, and insured to the eyeballs). I am one of the organisors of the recently held QLD Reptile Expo. For a first turnout it was a great success. All profits were donated to the Childrens ward of the local hospital. Gix, that was a Coastal Carpet Python- Morelia Spilota Mcdowelli.

Cheers,

Kris.

Motogp, if you are in qld you can keep Green Tree Snakes on a recreational permit. You can find them every now and then but they are not a comonly kept species. They cost from anywhere from $350-00 to $800-00 depending on colour phase. If you meant Green Tree Pythons, they are getting heaps more common in collections now with heaps of breeders selling them. They can be found on Herptrader and rdu every now and then from $4k up to $10k for hatchlings.

The only thing I've learnt from owning snakes is always ensure you wash your hands thoroughly before attempting to handle the joe blake after feeding. Cause if it smells like a rat the mongrel thing will bite you.

Oh and Merlyn, I don't take my dog to the crocodilian infested parts. I take other peoples cause I don't like the idea of having them disappear. Best way to find out if there's a swimming log about though is when the mut disappears...

Merlyn
22-09-2008, 02:13 PM
well fair enough Shadow :) I dont think its a good idea to go anywhere where there is a crocodilian infestation, the croc might not be satisfied with just a puppy :)

I may be a bit of a girl when it comes to things like those photos, but honestly its a bit sad for me cos I know how wonderful rats are as pets and they are at least as smart as dogs, if not more. Rats aren't just mindless disease carriers. Ill leave it at that :)

The only reason it's spitting it back out is so it can either escape the people or attack them.

Otherwise it'll sit there digesting it happily for the next few days.

Cripes, $4k was a bit out of my price range. Think of all the bike parts I could buy! :D

It doesn't necessarily have to be a tree snake, I'd just like one that's green/yellow/some other weird colour that's not brown or black. I am in Qld so I might have a look into this recreational permit thing. Thanks!

Jo, if you're looking for a snake with a good temperament, you can't go past a diamond python.
This is my boy. I've had him since he was a noodle - about 8 years. They're such low maintenance pets too... I feed him once a month now, and clean out his terrarium about a week later.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/59024105538324.jpg

Got this enclosure for about $200. Cheaper than a tank, and he can climb. It's well ventilated and escape proof. Just need to line the bottom with some plastic and newspaper.

JackTar
28-09-2008, 03:58 PM
Is that a mesh enclosure? How do you go keeping him warm in winter?

Lucas
28-09-2008, 04:43 PM
Those mesh enclosures are good year round in eastern QLD Jacktar. Just before I moved back to Canberra I was converting two large averies into snake enclosures.

JackTar
28-09-2008, 05:08 PM
Morrigan is in NSW though, aren't you mate? That is why I asked, I imagine they would be great up north. I have even refused to get my daughters rabbits or Guniea pigs here in Canberra because I don't wanna find them frozen to death and then have to tell the girls. And they sure as fuck aren't living inside.

Lucas
28-09-2008, 05:11 PM
There you go, Sydney according to her profile.

She has diamond pythons though and their range is pretty much from Eden to Port Macquarie. They'd be sweet in mesh in sydney year round, especially indoors.

I knew people with rabbits and guniea pigs that were fine during Canberra winters. Just make sure they have plenty of bedding and a dry sheltered area.

morrigan
30-09-2008, 10:31 PM
If it's a particularly cold winter, he's got a heat pad under his hide - which is an old Shark helmet! - He'll just curl up in there till the sun comes out again. The back room faces North West as well, so he gets plenty of warmth

Lucas

Pythons aren't vemomous Si. They've got shitload of needle-sharp teeth though, 4 rows on their upper jaw and 2 rows on the lower. A snake that size you'd barely feel it bite you.

Hatchies (Hatchlings) are normally pretty snappy but calm as they grow and realise you'er not gonna eat them.

scotty mac
02-10-2008, 07:22 PM
lucas; just coastals. a couple of them were stripped when born but parents not very stripped.

Si: yeah this guy was n still is very snappy.lol we got 2 (the twins) smegol n gollum. kinda suits them 1's very placid n the other is a bit mental.lol.

Here are a couple of Coastal Carpets(Morelia spilota Mcdowelli) that I keep. The Orange one is "Hypomelanistic"-reduced black pigment. The stripey one is also a Coastal, but she is striped. Out of the 60 odd snakes I keep(only 5 hatchies in that lot) Coastals are one of my favourites. They are the most varied python as far as colour and pattern go in Australia. The yellow Carpet is my male Atherton Jungle Python-another type of Carpet Python. Good to hear so many fans of snakes on this site.
Cheers,

Lucas
02-10-2008, 10:16 PM
Also, being in a warm climate you can get away with building enclosures out of Q-Blok and Coreflute. Looks good, easy to maintain, cheap and easy to put together, just need a hacksaw, drill and rivett gun.

Lucas,
For Pythons I breed Childrens(Patterned and Patternless), Coastals(striped, normals, very dark and very light colours), Atherton and black n gold Jungles, Water Pythons, Spotteds and hopefully my Black Headeds will produce this season.

For Colubridae I'll have Eastern Brown Tree Snakes this season.

And for the Elapids(front fanged venomous)I'll have Inland Taipans, Eastern Browns, Western Browns(Hopefully), Common Death Adders and fingers crossed my Coastal Taipans will get up this season but I think they may still be a little small.

Cheers,

Kris.

I've heard that rabbits are better for older snakes - softer bones and less fat content, so I'm going to try a change of diet for him. There's a pet shop not far away that sells 3-packs of frozen baby bunnies for about the same price as the rats.
