Hi folks

got me an upcoming holiday overseas and want to get a new camera on duty-free

have looked around and think that the Ricoh R8 is the way to go
but open to opinions ;)

main criteria are
- must fit in moto-jacket pocket
- prefer optical zoom of about 5, dont give a flying fuck about digi-zoom
- movies with sound
- metal casing

thats about it really, not really fussed about megapixie numbers

the r8 is looking like it could end up in my hands for $400

what u think?

Do yourself a favour get something that has a Lithium Battery.

I recommend Panasonic Lumix, plenty of different models, they have good lenses and most have ally cases.

Only thing is ur looking at XD cards instead of the traditional SD Card, Cards are still around the same price though.

Iv only ever bought cybershot cameras, easy to use. latest one fits nice in the pocket.
chuck in a big memory stick for 80 odd bucks off ebay, and you can record high quality video for ages. My mates give me shit constantly for having it glued to my hand wherever I go.

All my youtube vids were filmed with my cybershot. saves as MPEG vids, not avi or shitty quicktiime vids.

I'v even stuck one on an RC glider and smacked it into the road and it still goes.

sound quality is great. plug it into your puter with the USB cord, copy past, cant get any easier.

mrs has an olympus, just as awesome.
I did a search a long time ago and ended up finding a comparison site. with every camera on the australian market side by side.cant remember the name tho [:p]

I've got a panasonic lumix, but a full size camera. Bought it a few years ago. My bro bought the newer, compact pocket sized version. Both have got 10x optical zoom and anti shake. If you get something with a good zoom, make sure it's got anti-shake, otherwise the zoom'll be effectively useless.

I bought a Fujifilm finepix a few months back. 8.2 megapixel and 4x optical zoom. Movie shots too.... Front casing is metal, fits in a pocket and cost about $300, probably a bit cheaper now too.

I forgot to add, it takes an SD card and some form of fujifilm card, comes with rechargable battery and charger, battery has a good life too.

Fimp, I just bought a Panasonic Powershot A640
There were plenty of smaller ones around but it still fits in you jacket O.K, But it takes an SD card (so you can download it just about anywhere) and I searched for one that took AA batteries...
As sure as shit when you want to use it the Rechargable type are fuggin flat...(had a cannon one before this one and was always the case while traveling)
It also has a flip around viewing screen so when its in your pocket it won't get scratched.(also good for when you are doing the self taken porn shots as it turns around so you can see it from the front of the camera as well...!):D

thanks blokes,
the panasonic was looking good
but then i say that vid is in quicktime so....

the olympus was up there too, although i would prefer an SD card as i have a slot in my laptop
have to check one out next time im down at the shop

was originally looking at sonys, cos sony stuff tends to serve me well
will have to play with one of them ones too!

don't buy an olympus. had endless issues with one i bought a couple of years ago, then they started trying to dodge me out of the warranty. took way too much time and effort to get it sorted and went through multiple cameras with the same issues while they denied anything was wrong. got a fujifilm now no issues since i bought it 3 years ago. not that its the best, but it works.
