i reckon looks good, but take 2 inches off the end? and definitely go the way sharky is saying with the concave and angled down a bit. or maybe you can compensate the nuts smashed on tank by shortening it more! then you can mash your balls all you like?

The weightier front part of the tail ties in with the bulky front end. The sleek one doesn't work as well.

What sort of foam do you guys use for this kind of shaping?
Where can I get some?

Gix11
17-04-2008, 01:19 PM
High Density (HD) Foam mate. I get mine from a special effects company who build theme park rides etc. They have shit loads of the stuff lying around and I just walked into their factory and asked for a bit. I got enough to do my tail section and Mark's light unit for $20. Industrial areas near you may have a company that uses the same stuff. Check it out. Alternatively you'll have to ask the others where they get it over the counter.

I'm trying to get the angles right so the mask is still tucked in and the lights dont foul on the headstock.

Hey large - I'm about to go down the custom subframe and tail for the 12.
My plan is to fuck off sculpting foam - I haven't done an arts degree so I'm pretty useless in that regard. Tried and failed about 3 times really. My plan is to produce scaled side, top and rear views of a tail piece I want - plug them into solidworks and produce 3d models. From this I will be able to print out "slices" of the tail that I can stick to timber and cut out and assemble the tail piece like an aircraft wing is made. I'll fill in the missing sections with expander foam and then sand back inline with the timber templates. Hey presto hopefully I'll have a nice plug sorted. I'll also be able to lay everything up in solidworks with a photo of the bike so I can see it assembled on the bike - sort of - will only work in a side view but you get the idea.

Cool - will wait and see what you got mr fimp. I was thinking cheap fibreboard - I dont want to use anything that will ablate faster then the foam - expanding foam is suprisingly tough. I figure i'll have to give the whole lot a fine coat of body filler or plaster as outlaw did with his headlight unit before hitting it with paint etc.

Seen bodywork done that way with foam slices about 2" thick. If you can get accurate cross sections it should be easy enough. But how do ytou get the cross sections accurate?

Btw, can you tell me the ground clearance under your moteur/exhaust, whichever is lower ploz??

I'll be able to do a section view through planes in my model then print them off. Glue the images to the timber/foam (still working that out) and cut them out that way. I reckon I'll be able to get a much more symetric profile rather then using my eye.

I look at my bike with its bolt on bits and bobs and think it looks fantastic, and because I bolted it on, I am the bollocks. Then I take a look around at what you guys are up to, and I am suddenly brought back down to earth with a bump.[B)]

I’m humbled by you guys, and any time I feel myself getting a bit big headed I log on, have a little wander round, and think to myself, “You Know Nothing Cunt” [:o)]

Large, what is the product name of that blue foam stuff you use. Do you layer your fiberglass over it like a plug. If so do you coat it to stop the chemicals in the resin melting it.

I have a gap between my tank and my seat and I have been advised to add foam to the seat but there is not really enough covering to add foam then fix the cover bact to the seat sub-frame.

I was thinking perhaps I could sculpt a bit of that stuff and make a fiberglass tank protector to close up the 10 to 12mm gap.

I would value you advice matey

It's literally called Blue Foam or Extruded Polystyrene Foam.

I bought it from a place that molded fairings to go on truck cabins, but that was a while back and I cant remember exactly where it was.

Do a google search on "Blue Foam" and you'll find modellers talking about it with links to various manufacturers. It's used by plane, train and (maybe even automobile) modellers.

It comes in sheets of 2400 x 600 and widths from 12.5 - 150mm or something so it may be a bit much for your needs.

Someone here tried using that foam in a can that you use to block up holes in your house to mold up a tank a while back, so that could be an option for a small area.

I used masking tape to protect the foam. Thats the pic with the light green plug. Apparently I should have used some wax/release stuff too [V] any tape like packing tape etc will work if it sticks to the foam well.

What bars are you using? Do you know the height/rise/sweep of them?

Cheers!

Sorry Neil, Didn't see your post.

They're ABM fatbars from Stu At Ausfr. So they don't have a Reed/Henry bend or anything like that

In geological terms...this project is screaming along.[:p]

Haven't polished it yet.

I'm discovering the joys of finding out all the little idiosyncrasies of an ICV

Good Times

Ok, cheers mate - the sweep looks a bit much for me, but I like the rise. I've got an old set of 966's that I'm going to use to work out rough bar position once I get my clamps on (or more accurately once brad gets my clamps on, after painting and drilling the lower yokes ;)). I'm thinking just a set of renthal enduro bend fatbars might be ok, which have slightly more rise than the 966's, but if the rise isn't enough I'll probably go for their ricky bend which has another 20mm rise and a similar low sweep angle...

If that means your alcohol abuse is gathering speed then yes, thats entirely true.....still not convinced on the bike....I am looking at it......Looks kinda like an ornament in a museum......[:o)]:D

Being an ICV it has a few idiosyncrasies....like not wanting to start when I'm sitting on the seat. But I can put up with that because of the pleasure it gives when riding it. It really is the sweetest handling/best sounding bike I've owned.

The RTA are a pack of cunts tho. Even though it's been engineered and rego'd in WA, they want a NSW engineers report, because apparently NSW ADR's are different to WA ADRs.:(

Thats ghey Large! I had the same problem with my 7/11! Even tho it was rego'd in Vic i had to jump thru so many hoops to get it engineered n certified! End up costing me about $1400 by the time I had it on the road!

Hey Fight Fan, was that because of the 1100 motor? Or something else like subframe?

Do the RTA NEED to know if the bike has a 1100 in it? or could I just tell them it's a reco 750?

The RTA don't need to know anything.

But if you hide something from them and/or your insurer (if you have one) it could come back and bite you if you crash or get stopped by the rozzers and certain bits or numbers don't match.

as for the -10.

I'm hoping to get it running by the end of the month. I figure once I can sit on it and ride it around a bit, I will get keen to do more on it.

Both really! I needed an engineers cert for the engine swap n a blue slip fpr rego n I got ran around somethin fierce! They wanted me to do an ADR brake test to make sure my K4 Gix1000 front end was up to the task of stoppin the bike plus a Db check! Luckily my engineer rode n let me off easy! Otherwise it would have cost me a fuck load more! [xx(] Oh well its all over now anyway...

Awesome work man. I just broke the front off my 10r and plan to fighter it. I'd love a set of those triple trees. :P
