hey guys just needs some advice, ive got a 98 zx6, its got a aftermarket digital speedo (a no name one) wondering at what rpm is the crusing rpm on this bike?? i seem to crusie at 5000 and by 7000rpm the bike is screaming not sure if the tacho is wrong or whether its just my exhaust which is a carbon fibre muzzy exhaust. i havent reached the rev limiter but the bike seems to peak at 8000 rpm and i dont wanna push it anymore in fear of damaging something. arent these bike suposed to red line at like 13000 or something??

any help would be appreciated

keep going till you hit the limiter mate and then have a look at the tacho and see what it reads.

the limiter is there for a reason. if the motor is in good nick you wont damage it at all

Does the tacho read correctly at idle Deano?

hey chalk i think your question was meant for me and yes i think the tacho reads correctly at idle, its showing 1500 once warm or 1200 cold im pretty sure thats correct

Can anyone confirm that's the normal idle?

Does the bike have standard gearing?Does it still have power on tap? If so run it to the limiter, try it out of gear first.

And yes I got the name wrong.

Thats about where my old zx6 track bike lived, 10,000 -13000 rpm all day, only time it gave troubles was when i downshifted 2 gears from near that revs and bent a few valves....Dohhh ...

what happens when the valves bend?? was it heaps of money and work to get it fixed

They bend...................... generally from touching the top of the pistons. Think hitting a nail off centre.

Can result in engine destruction, definitely NOT a good thing. Requires minimum of head removal, valve, valve seal and valve seat replacement, and just gets more expensive from there.

so the moral of the story is not to over rev the engine and gear down 2 cogs at a time??

been thinking bout it and you really have to admire a modern sports bike, i mean they rev at 13000 rpm with no trouble day in and day out, suffer constant abuse and most take it in their stride, the guys that design these engines are freakin awesome.

You would have to try real hard to do it , only have to dab the brakes a little and you in the right rev range to downshift a couple.
mine just tweaked the valves enough that i developed a miss at idle, couldn't realy tell otherwise but i missed the last 2 sessions to be safe and when i found the problem i was happy i did.
