yeah, i went to rilusi in morley today and scoped out their front fighter style cowls.. didn't have anything in stock.. all on an 'as per request' basis.. i'd have liked to see them, before i throw the cash down..

Can you guys suggest anyone in here that sells the gear ?

I want to do something a bit agressive with the whole thing, and keep it reasonably cost effective (no 24k gold plating).. probably involve taking that horrible kwakka green of the wheels and bead blast.. or just get them powder coated..

I was thinking of definitely chopping that boxed up rear, choices for the frame could be to polish it up.. matt satin finish.. or anno it.. ( so many decisions )

Something along the lines of this 89 zxr 750.. ( but without the bee stinger style tail.. )

sweet, talking with rated R now.. should have a front cowl soon.. have ordered a custom rad and oil cooler guard from warp speed.. awesome bloke, 2 thumbs up.. bought 2 - one for my honda.. and one for this kwakka..

the next piece of my project, i am guessing.. will be to pull the bike down, clean everything.. polish the frame up.. is it that hard to do a mirror finish on a frame ? or is it best to take to a pro ?.. on second thoughts, is it even worth polishing - or is it just too high maintenance ? ( to keep clean )..

I really have so many ideas, it really is just like a blank canvas.. and you can paint anything you want.. isn't this a great feeling ?! and it's completely personal.. no 2 bikes are ever the same..

Azrael

MMMMM with a frame that thick id polish it then tape a negative of a design on the frame, bead blast the exposed metal back to matt finish, remove the tape and hey ho lets go best of both worlds.. just a thought..

I hope you're bringing that to the show Chris ?

it's hardly show worthy at the moment, alot of work is required..

my first problem is..

HOW DO I GET THE FARKIN FUEL TANK OFF !?

I'm not jokin' - I've got the front up.. but it seems like there's some latch or something there holding the back down.. have looked for screws.. clips and anything else holding it - but there's foam under there stuck to the tank, and i cant see jack..

If I can get this bike apart, i dont think it'll be all that hard to polish it up.. just gonna take a lot of time.. however, bead blasting might be the go also.. but nothing says 'fighter' more than polished goodness..

I'm just trying to figure how i'll get those MX style bars attached.. these have a clip-on style bar that goes straight under the triple clamps on the head stem..

Is this something that can be easily fabricated ? or is it gonna cost me more than the bike ?

digital cluster should be here shortly.. then front cowl.. then chop the ass..

I have to figure how i'm gonna rework that tail.. i have no skills with plastic, nor the resources here.. *shrugs*

this is a difficult project for a joombie noobie like me...

sorry for all the daft questions guys, just thinkin' out aloud..

Which area in Perth are you located mate? There might be a member close by that can come along and help you get this tank off...

Good thinking Jarrod.
Also Euk, if you are not going to enter your bike in the show, turn up and have a chat.
Most of the bikes we do tail changes on, we pretty much change the whole subframe and seat set up. You can see a couple of examples on Sunday.
Some people rework their original subbie to take the modern bodywork too but i think this is a better way to do it.
Particularly if you bend something in a tumble, replacement bits just bolt right up.

You have a few options with bars, cheap and not so cheap. You can see what you need to do at the bike show or come on the next fighter ride.

As far as polishing goes. Fuck polishing.
I'd rather hammer nails through Jakams penis than polish a bike frame by hand.

And.....

Azreal has offered the use of his workshop for minor works including metal works... I had 2 plates made to attach the R1 arse end onto my bolt points for the original subframe while I was in brissy, shouldnt be too hard to make a set for your bike...

Go here http://www.mrcycles.com/default.asp look up your make and model and find the fuel tank breakdown, it should show you all the bits that make up the mounts which will give you a hint on how to get it off.
I had a look at there is a bracket at the rear of the tank that bolts to the chaissis on either side.
You unbolt this from the chassis, then unbolt it from underneath the tank.
Should be too hard for you.

I'm in kwinana..

Yeah, thanks for the schematic ( blowout diagram ) helps heaps when you've got an idea of whats supposed to be under there..

I'm about to head home now ( still at work ) will have a crack at it when i get it into the garage..

As for polishing, I didn't mean with my hands - but probably a buffing wheel on a bench grinder.. or on a power drill.. I'm not that mad ! ^_^

welcome mate i used to have one of them [its an H1 aint it ?] hardest rear shock ive ever owned but one of the best rwu front ends in the game ...only one thing wrong with it ...its green ...

Eukanuba
01-05-2008, 10:27 PM
I know.. the green is a bit 'WOW' aint it ?

Yeah, it's an 89 zxr 750 [H1]

I wouldn't mind working a solution to that shocker.. cos it's just shiiiiiiiteee..

I need to re-oil the front shocks too, they're way soft.. and are gonna need stiffer springs..

Colour wise - I was thinking, a nice metallic matt black finish on the tank ( and remaining plastics ) or... something totally whack, and go with that luminescent kwakka green.. ( horrid i know, but it will be distinctive enough that you'll know it's my beast.. )I dunno - there's something about black paint and shiny alloy that really spins my wheels..

Chris, or euk.. if u need welding or fab work done, come up some time an ill walk you through the ins an outs of changing the rear end on any bike, got plenty of half done examples.. If you need mechanical work done i have a pretty comprehensive selection of tools in my garage at home in Innalloo if its a bit closer for you.
This also goes for any of you as i dont know your backgrounds or skill levels so ill keep it broad. If i cant do it, i know someone who can.

Oh for the record i can weld pvc, cpvc, polypropylene motorcycle plastics etc..
And dont hire trailers, i have a ute and trailers, i understand what its like to do a build when u feel your bike's stuck in your shed/garage and too hard to move. nothing is too hard. im sure theres plenty of like minded guys on here who are just as interested helping out where they can to see more sweet builds on the road. Im happy to help if i can and im sure im not alone.

he he my last ever green vehicle ..a list of disasters
nothing to do with the bike it was ace just unlucky
1] water manifold split behind the head
2] some dozy urchin in a bike shop put the wrong nut on me gearbox sproket and the chain came off at 90mph wrecked the water pump and took a chunck out of the crankcase[they got me a new engine]
3]2weeks later two little [and i mean little] kids try to steal it while im having a cup of tea ..it had no back wheel on it ..i was changing it at the time they tried to wheel it away on a paddock stand ???
4]on the way to selling it a african mini cab driver hits me up the arse while i was waiting at a set of lights .. dosent end there
5] i part exed it for a gsxr 400..which [on the way home ]overheated and cooked it self [V]
but it did 150mph oh and i got nicked on the way back from seein my brother in manchester at 3am on the M1 just outside london doin 140odd mph 6mth ban and 300quid ..but i still like em ..id just buy a red and balck one next time lol

Azrael, thanks for the offer.. i really appreciate it..

It's a fairly dinkum drive from kwinana to wangarra.. but i do have a couple trailers and a jeep with a towball.. I can take anything anywhere ^_^

I'd have to basically bring what i need up with me, cos just popping home to grab something isn't really an option when it's about 120k's round trip... ( gotta watchout for those speed cameras )

Dont suppose you'd know anyone that would have a sexy ducktail sittin around unloved ? I'm thinking of some serious surgery on this ass.. cos damn, it's fugly ! and a nice extended wheel out the back would look mighty fine..

Jockney: Did you find you get lots of compression lock and fishtailing shenanigans when you had your's ? I'm finding alot of 'whoa' moments when i am coming back through the gears :)

Ok, on my maiden flight last night ( went out for a group ride )

Came in a bit hot on a corner and failed to make the right, left quick switch coming out of a round about.. ( the ass end just got way light, and not confidence inspiring.. feeling alot like highside territory )

so I straightened it up, cos I'd have clipped the exit ( shitty old roundabout, poor lighting ) and i was in wayyyy too hot..

managed to keep it up after launchin the bike over the medium strip.. ass off seat, both wheels off the ground...

one almighty BANG.. and after arriving in scarb's.. noticed I've flat spotted my front rim.. on the l/h side...

FARK ! (shakes head)

anyone here roll front rims ?

Euk a streetfighter is just a name for the bike, you're not supposed to actually attack the street with it.
It's good you stayed upright with only a dinged wheel.

Ok, next stage.. strip down - starting phase 2..

where should i start, assuming i want to put it back together so it actually works..

Is there some sort of method to removing a loom and engine from a bike ? I've never done that before.. cant be all that hard..

do i need to tag things, take photos ? make special notes ? or just pull it all out piece by piece ?

I'm going to replace things eventually, ( cluster to digital, levers etc ) but i'll worry about that when i get the frame and engine back..

anyone got any tips ?

Azrael: you said you've done quite a few tails.. are there any you can recommend ? I want the look like the bike on the first page - where the wheel was out longer than the seat.. dont want a big tail on it.. but it's got to look tidy, but short.. with room for brake light.. etc.. maybe something along the lines of the ducati 1098 tail ( if you know what i mean )

I'm looking on $$Ebay$$ and there's not a great deal of anything locally.. and I'm avoiding wreckers until i know what i want.. or what's out there..

Azrael
06-05-2008, 05:38 PM
Best bet is take a pic of the beast side on now before you start stripping it so you can try different tails using photoshop till you find the look your going for.
This website http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/index.htm has specs and pics on a shitload of bikes, use the pics to butcher for your photoshop bike.
Keep in mind tails can be cut shorter etc so go mad with the photoshop but try to keep things proportional.

I label and photo anything in the wiring that isnt generic or easily identifiable, i also put bolts back where they came from (where possible, engine mainly) for ease of rebuild.

I dont know if your bike has a suspended motor or a carriage frame, im guessing a carriage in which case save yourself some time and tip the bike on its side and lift the frame off the motor, dont try and lift the motor from the frame. You may have already thought of this but i thought it was worth the mention just in case.

Before you go to the wreckers try on here for parts, there are so many guys here with shit lying around in their shed, most of us hoard it and keep it around for ornamental purposes in our sheds and workshops but if approached when intoxicated or with the offer of alcoholic substances sometimes we will give up the goods..sometimes.. nobody, i repeat, NOBODY, is getting my sprocket clock..

Hope that helped

I've got about 20L of bourbon here.. ( and a 25L still ) I can make anyone any alcoholic beverage they want..

Anyone got a tail sitting unloved ? It's worth a couple bottles of the SMOOOTHEST bourbon you'll ever drink.. real old style wood flavoured bourbon.. 6 months on the oak.. ( around 50% or 100proof ) maybe more.. depending on what you've got to trade ^_^

Anyone ?

On a further note, I didnt know you could just take the engine out like that.. I thought it might have to be disassembled or something to get it out - but after having a look at it tonight in the shed.. it looks like it might come out just as you described..
