..um got itchy feet again ......im planning to do a BIG adventure trip in afew years possibly with my brother and son ala long way round stylee

just want yer veiws/ advice/ pisstakes on this subject:)

so the plan is to ride from here[Sydney] to London[thats in England BTW] on a couple of adventure sports style bikes

1 which bikes ? id like to do it on a Tiger [so that i could ride into the factory in leicester and maybe get some sponsorship or at least some servicing along the way]

2 how do we get from the west coast of oz to indonesia[ we ve tentativly researched the trip and we reckon this route would work :
sydney-broom/perth,indonesia-thailand-myanmar-bangladesh-india-pakistan-iran-turkey-bulgaria-romania-hungary-austria-germany-belgium-england this gives us only 2 water crossings to do and 17000 odd miles of riding although we may well end up doing it in a 4x4 but id love to do this before i die

3 has any of you done a mega trip like this ?or visited any of the asian countries[ive done most of the european ones]

so with this in mind guess where my supers going ....lol
the wife thinks im nuts :Dcos ill be at least 50 when i attempt it

Sounds great,Ive only been to the tourist bit of Thailand(Phuket)It was great, before I went I wanted to hire a bike over there but the short bus trip from the airport to the hotel cured that plan, they are nuts.I wouldnt last 5 minutes in that.If the crazy drivers dont get you the bomb throwers will when you get to Iran or Pakistan.Good luck it would be an awesome trip.

Get a dual purpose adventure bike (dirt bike style) 600cc+ with the biggest mutha fuel tank for it. Comfy riding position, can get screens for them, they handle well and can take rough roads and river crossings.

Yamaha are releasing their new 660 Tenere model later this year, I believe.

Ewan McGregor did ok on a BMW in "Long Way Round".

Spent 4 months in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, rode a CBR 400 while over there, my only advice is to take a shit load of bribe money for the police etc. Oh and if a gorouus woman is over 5 FT tall she's a he.
cheers Rod

fair enuf rod by the looks of it our biggest problem will be getting the bikes to mainland asia, getting thru the north west passage, and across Iran, although an alternative is to boat it from india to kuwait and go north thru the middle east

There is a write up in the december 2007 issue of Classic bike (English) about a bloke that rode a 1984 XS850 to India from Scotland via Bulgaria, Iran and Pakistan, only paid 300 pound for the bike. If you want I can try scan the story and send it too you.

cheers gibbo id like to see that ive read sanders book but most of these guys seem to have some sort of sponsorship
..i mean we wouldnt mind doin a charity thing but obviously we wanna be as independant as possible
so i suppose getting a ballpark figure for the trip may be a good oidea

Can`t answer the 2nd two questions, but as for the choice of bike.

I wouldnt choose a GS1200 Bimma jobbie, way too heavy to pick up off the floor ! Long way down showed how hard they are to pilot in crap road conditions.

How about summat more supermotard like a big KTM ?
Pretty lightweight, superb handling, tough as fuck, simple engineering ??

CX650 turbo with nobblies and who cares if the turbo fucks up it will still have the earth shattering power of the 500 :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Or how about a 550 night hawk with nobblies four cylinders of raging power :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

But I reckon a trans alp would be perfect for the job or a free <s>beans</s> wind

ur side splittin humour is always amazed me stuart.......but i reckon a adapted big single trailie is the way to go something common thts easy to get stuff for id love to ride a brit[bike --easy tiger] back home but we ll see ive got plenty of time to sort this and if a bloke can circumnavigate the world using his legs i reckon we can do it on a couple of bikes regardless of their age ..
andy ur right mate a couple done the world on a second hand cx 500 a few years ago even strippin it down to load it into a chinese junk
