Hello fellow madmen,... err.. wise-wheeled ones.
I humbly knock on your door to join the fold, look and learn.

Been a dirtbiker since I was 7, raced speedway since I was 16 and have now eventually turned to the tar with my very first roady - an '04 R1 wreck that I'm morphing slowly into a streetfighter.

Break out the bourbon.

I just did a search - Yes appo, that's the bike you were looking at. They changed it to a stat write-off on the day of auction. Don't know why though because the frame is straight, the stupid b'stards! I hate having to throw away stuff that's still good.

I still got it at a reasonable price and it's not as bad as it looks (I reckon the look of it scared most off). It's perfect for me to rebuild into what I want without having to throw away or sell-off anything. :)

No pine in my pallet, thankyou. Only Teakwood.

I was surprised at how easy these R1's come apart. I'm not a roady expert by any means but I'm enjoying playing with this thing. I've stripped the whole thing down to the engine and am getting ready to respray stuff and add personal touches. It's a lot bigger than my mechano set. :D

A late model r1 is a fine point to start a fighter project. I bought a gsx 1100 81 years ago in boxes and on a pallet. Had it going in a couple of weekends.

I have gone the other way. Putting R1 04-06 bits on my 88 slingshot.

Project Pallet Bike update:

The painting is taking forever and some parts are taking their time in arriving but here's an example of the over-all theme.
I've expanded on a style some of you would've seen in a magazine not long ago, which was copied from a Fox MX jersey.

I thought hard about flat black (very cheap and easy) but after many close calls with dipstick drivers while commuting on my Motard, I decided that I want to be seen and heard. :D

So I'm gonna light this R1 up like a Christmas tree without looking too pooncey and I got GYTR mufflers for it. [:o)]

I drew a line at American bling, though. I'm using colour instead of chrome and polish.

thats awsome work darren love the paint my only suggestion would be maybe bring those lights closer to the headstock but thats just my two cents mate top work so far dude

Bear
08-03-2008, 08:16 PM
Thanks guys.
Yeh I thought that about the lights too but I've got to mount the original dash above them and it's quite big so it may balance out.

I'm also toying with the idea of a small dark perspex screen that curves around the dash and goes far enough down to meet the top light. Slamdog gave me that idea.

The whole head area is a headache at the moment. Gotta route the wires etc. and make it look minimal. The problem with going naked is that everything is...naked. Gotta tidy up soo much because everything gets seen.

It's given me more respect for the experienced people such as ExBen and many others here.

BANDITROD
08-03-2008, 08:26 PM
it aint easy thats for sure any one can make a bike a naked but very few have the patience to make a very nice naked like you have done mate and i know it sounds like more and more dosh but have you thought about an aftermarket dash rather than the stock one only cos you have come this far it would be a shame to finish it off in a hurry if you know what i mean but thats just me mate its your build not mine and it looks sweet btw

Bear
08-03-2008, 09:34 PM
I'm hearing you. :)
I blew the bugget about $2000 ago.

I'm willing to try the standard dash and see how it comes up.
Got a bellypan to fit also and that will make the bike look stockier/taller.

I may just have to put up with a few mistakes for a while until I have more money to do things properly.

I appreciate the feedback though. :D

Here's a better side-on look. I'll be adding Acerbis handguards with LED strip indicators mounted onto the front of them.
http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/269631253189341.JPG

Bear
08-03-2008, 09:43 PM
Here's something I discovered for those who don't know and are thinking about painting their frame like I did - piping, wiring and cabling blend in with a black frame but stand out like dogs balls against a colour.

It's this reason that's making the headstem area look messy at the moment. A facia shroud of some sort would hide it all but it wouldn't be naked enough for me. :D

I'll get there but probably not in time for AFR, unfortunately.

Some of the finished paint work.

The top coat is a soft feel clear that doesn't reflect highlights. Very matt looking and has a rubbery feel. The only downside is that it's been quite difficult to get grease marks off but I may just have to find the right cleaner.

Leigh Adams old club. I never knew you did speedway mate. How long did you do it for and which characters did you meet?

By the way, that paint job looks really nice up close. Love the idea of a matt/satin finsh that isn't just single colour.

Bear
21-04-2008, 08:20 PM
That's right Si. I joined Arena when they went to the then Conference League (2nd division) and Leigh joined Swindon, I think.
Leigh Adams used to give me his old bits and pieces. A rim and frame bits here and there. He'd update every season and I got some hand-me-downs.

Have met all the Aussie riders and had some good chats to most of them, Crump, Sullivan (very nice guy), Steve Johnston (a real character) and a few others. I raced over there when laydown engines where just being introduced.

Had a ball meeting diff people at each track we raced. For some reason (I assumed it was because I was Aussie), total strangers had no problems coming up to me and talking about anything. Made heaps of friends.

Met heaps of British characters but can't remember their names. I remember an ex. world final rider was running the spare parts van each meeting and always had a story to tell. Short guy who always had engine probs at the wrong time when he raced in the 80's.
Can't remember his friggin name...

Rode the first ever meeting held at the Isle of White and had the lap and track record for a week! Heheh. :D
Was also the first rider to fly over the fence there. All in the same meeting. [:p]
Came third over-all because of that.

Gix11
21-04-2008, 08:36 PM
As I mentioned, I never realised mate! I may know a few guys that know you. I'm close friends with the Crumps and also Neil Street (or Bill as he likes to be known).

Bear
21-04-2008, 08:49 PM
I'm probably just another rider to them. :D

Met Neil street once when I was down Poole way. Actually I think it was when I was having a shocking meeting at Exeter - a friggin bicycle drome with dirt on it! He may remember me from almost having an on-track punch-up with local hero/wanker Gary Lobb because I shut him out in one race. :D
Apparantly he didn't like losing.

Had some chats to Craig Boyce and attended one of his ride clinics early on. Tried to get Boycey, Crump and Adams interested in making a "How to Ride" DVD but they never got in touch. Their loss. I'll do it without them. :D

I remember that guy's name who ran the parts van at Arena - Dave Jessup.

im hoping to put some updated pics of my setup on here as soon as i get this final bit machined up

have you get her through rego yet?

Bear
28-04-2008, 08:10 PM
Yeh Fimp that GPR setup just bolts right onto the top triple clamp (using existing threaded holes) and is easy to remove when I need to change air filter etc. and the damping arm slots into a another alloy piece bolted to the front tank mount and the frame (had to drill and tap some holes in the frame). This is standard from GPR in the USA. No fabrication needed.

Scheduled to go over the pits (so to speak) next tuesday and the RTA woman told me the same thing about receipts - make sure you've got them all otherwise they send you back and forth to get them.

Get this - $36 for a blue slip, which is basically a machinery inspection or equivelent to, and $400+ for the RTA pit inspection where all they do is check numbers and receipts!

The only good thing is that I'm legally allowed to ride there and back even without a plate.
