Hi guys i have a question about chain gaurds.
Do you need to have one on your bike by law even if u don't have pillion pegs and will be never taking a passenger?

Yes you do mate, in both QLD and WA at least.

I think it's supposed to finish either 200mm behind the passenger pegs or at least directly above the top of the axle.

Will find a link.

Go to Guidelines for general motorbike modificationsQLD in the mods and technical section.
But here's the relevant bit anyway

Chain guards
If the motorbike has a chain drive, the driver and any
passenger must be protected from the front sprocket
and at least the upper part of the chain by the frame
or equipment of the motorbike, or by a chain guard.
A chain guard must cover the chain to a point at least
300mm to the rear of the rearmost foot rest or above the
centre of the rear drive sprocket.
Motorbikes must be fitted with footrests for the rider,
and for any passenger for whom a seating position is
provided.

It's an ADR actually. As a rule engineers like it to cover 45 degrees backwards from the axle. Same as a rear mud guard.
