Hey guys, I'm currently wiring up a remote ignition and starter but can't seem to get my head around how relays work and was wondering if someone wanted to lend me a hand.
If you follow the instructions found on http://www.streetfighters.com.au/ASF_HT_remote_ignition.asp you can get a rough idea of what goes where on the relay.
The wireless units wires are as follows on the unit used in Gixs write up:
Red: 12v
Black: -
Green: Common wire
Yellow: Normally Open
White: Normally Closed (not used)

My unit is as follows (it is the same unit by the way but with an added momentary switch)

Switch one is for ignition (latching)
Switch two is for starter (Momentary)

Red:12v
Black:-
Purple:Common (s1)
Orange:Normally Open (Switch One)
Green: NC(S1 - not used)

Blue:Common (Switch 2)
Yellow: Norm Open (Switch 2)
White:NC (S2 - Not used i'm guesing)

Now do I need two relays for this? if so what hooks up where? I'm familiar with what wires I will need but am I right in assuming I will hook up the second relay the same as the first in Gixs' description but with the Green/yellow starter wire in place of the orange ignition wire. And the common from switch two connects to the 2nd relay also.

I'll do a proper write up of this with pics of course if anyone can help.
As I said I'm good with electronics, I just can't figure out how a relay works and what it does in respect to this unit.

Also when I'm looking at diagrams in Haynes, is the Aussie model closer to the US or UK model>?

Its for a GSXR 1100 btw.

Time for EXBEN to step in I think....;)

FWIW yes you will need 2 relays for this - and you can get dual relays (2 relay ciruits in one unit) to keep things tidy. I've seen them at Jaycar for about $12.

For the remote ignition/starter you will need both relays as you are doing 2 seperate tasks - 1. switching on the ignition (sending power to the lights/accessories) and 2. starting the bike (sending power to the starter).
What you have said sounds about right as far as wiring it up goes, but if Ben doesn't step in here then I'll try to find some free brain-space and remember how I did mine....

Just a few more 2C from me seifer.

I tested out my wiring of the unit on the bench before I installed it in the bike. Hooked it up to a battery and used an old blinker (indicator) as the test light. Then when I was confident I had it sussed, I wired it into the bike.
Secondly, I have put in a connector in the wiring to totally disable the unit for when I'm not riding the bike for a few days (saves your battery). You could also just use a 30A switch on the power wire for this (again Jaycar has these for about $4). You'd be surprised how quickly those units will flatten your battery.

Yeah i'm organising a switch for that, do you have the remote starter aswell or just the ignition?

Just the ignition.

give ben a call he drew me a diagram for mine its a remote start and you need 2 relays (have fun)

You don't still have a copy of the drawing to post up do you. Failing that, Ben can you help at all please?

You are a champ. Is that the Garison wireless kit from jaycar or another?

EXBEN

Seifer you can't use the Garison unit for starting the bike without some internal mods. The momentary relay only switches for 1 second which isn't enough time to start the bike. I am using one of these on Judge but I had to mod it to switch for 5 seconds.
On the other unit I sell the momentary relay stays on until you let go of the button. This is what Banditrod is using.

The diagram for yours will look something like this.

Cheers ben it really is much appreciated, without going into too much detail what kind of mods are required for making it go for 5 seconds, is it a few extra components or reprograming the chip? I figured this might be a problem when I bought it. How much are your units btw?

Is this the unit I will need?

It's a simple mod, the timer is just a capacitor so you need one that holds voltage longer. Its a 30c part. Just be sure to get the polarity right.

Im just giving away all my secrets aren't I.:)

do you find a problem with the signal dropping in and out causing the starter to stop start all the time when you hold your finger on the button or is it pretty good and stays on?

WIll 5 seconds be too long and do damage to the starter motor? can you get one for about 3 seconds or so?

bikes have sprag/over run clutches in the starter gears so they are designed for overrunning so once the bike is started it dosn't make any difference if the starter is running or not.

nothing like the way a car works.

it will be fine and do no damage what so ever.

Hey Ben, i replaced the capacitor with the part you listed and with the polarity the way you have it in the pic, but it is still only holding for 1 second. WHat do you think it is that i've missed?

Sorry Seifer I forgot to mention the one on the other side.

I've bought a new remote unit as I wasnt happy with the Garrison, this one I picked up was nice and cheap but ive got the same problem as for realys.
Could someone have a look at the following document and tell me if they are necessary, I'm thinking they won't be but I'm not sure.

Thanks
