Prime Minister John Howard has declared 2008 will become the Year of the Indian Scout to mark the bi-centenary of America’s scout movement.
Mr Howard said Australia was one of the first countries in the world to adopt the Indian scout, 100 years ago next year as a police motorcycle and of course not forgetting The life story of New Zealander Burt Munro, who spent years building a 1920 Indian motorcycle -- a bike which helped him set the land-speed world record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967 our sheep shagging mate from across the water in the land of the long white cloud and rain soaked roads.
About 60,000 Australians currently participate in owning an Indian scout making it the biggest movement of shite outside of America, while another two million have been part of the nation's largest Indian scout youth development organisation over the past 100 years, he said.
"The government greatly values the contribution these young Australians make to their families, their communities and the entire nation in pushing these motorcycles when they fail to start or breakdown," Mr Howard said in a statement.
"To commemorate this event and to recognise the contribution that the Indian scout has made and will continue to make to Australia, I am also pleased to announce that the Australian government has decided to designate 2008 as the Year of the Scout and all police motorcycles and parliament vehicles will now change over to an Indian scout, ministerial sidecars will be fitted to each and everyone with the most up to date communication and teleconferencing systems available.
"In addition, the Royal Australian Mint will strike a circulating coin next year to commemorate this event."
Australia's Indian scout halls also would share a government grant of $17.7 million to install rainwater tanks as the traditional rain dance has stopped working, Mr Howard said.
"This funding will assist the Indian Scouts to generate significant water savings while at the same time providing a tangible and ongoing demonstration of actions we can all take to conserve our precious water resources," he said.
"There is no more fitting way of commemorating 100 years of Indian scout activities worldwide than helping the Indian scouts of Australia in this practical way to learn about and practise wise water use and the chance to build big muscles pushing the old lumps of iron down the road."
