Just sprayed the front wheel black. Couldn't get the rotors off, so its a bit patchy in the middle:

Just polished the right hand side of the frame, and started taking off fairings. Lookin sweet. You can see my reflection in the top photo.

Hey Chubs. I'm a bit concerned. What do you mean "Couldn't get the rotors off"? Do you mean they wouldn't come off (sheared/rounded bolt heads or something) or couldn't be arsed? Nice work on the frame though mate.

I didn't shear any bolts or anything, but i couldn't get them to budge, and my allen key was starting to bend. I need a rattle gun to undo them i guess.
A job for another day, in the meantime i'd like to keep the bike on the road.

chubs. they are loctited in from factory. use a good quality allen key and put a long piece of pipe on it, then close your eyes and hope for the best.

I just took the discs off the track bike the other night and that what i had to do.

Got it - i did exactly what you said, deano. Worked a treat.
I tried asking at the ocau.mc forums, and got a million answers, ranging from using a hair dryer (what the???) to using a rattle gun (overkill!!!), but the good old breaker bar on an allen key got it.

Aslo givin them a bash with a centre punch a few tmies can break up the locktite

03-07-2006, 10:09 AM
Bought meself a couple of impact driver allen keys a couple of months ago. Invaluable, the Kwak has a lot of allen key jobbies, and all of them now come loose (the previous owner was a loctite, do it up hard as you can fool). Plus they're re-usable (no destroyed key or bolt). They cost a bit, $14:00 a pop- from Fisher Discounts, but worth every cent. I got a 5, 6 and 8 mmm, covers just about everything.

Razorback
03-07-2006, 12:25 PM
Yeah Chalk thats how I generally get my disks off. (just had to do it recently as some of you know LOL) The ones we couldnt get to move with the centre punch we used the impact driver on. Good stuff!

Deano
03-07-2006, 12:51 PM
keep in mind that loctite looses 30% of it strength once heated above 100degrees C

03-07-2006, 01:04 PM
Think I might just take the bottom end to the shop. I had a 3 foot ratchet on it, and not a sign of a budge. Impact driver didn't work either.
Some people just shouldn't be allowed into a garage.

I tried to get the 50mm clutch nut undone on the 1100w motor when rebuilding it (it holds the clutch plates and diaphram spring together) and wouldn't budge with a 1000ft 3/4" rattle gun.

i think i will be up shit creek when i burn out the current set of clutch plates[xx(]

Gix11
03-07-2006, 05:23 PM
I used a 5ft bar bell with the end cap removed slid over the breaker bar for that job. Works a treat!

04-07-2006, 08:04 AM
unfortunately using a longer extension on the ratchet won't help, as the clutch holder tool just keeps popping off, even thoughy I drilled it up and bolted it to the case, just to hold id tightly in place. Hopefully a rattle gun will sort it out.
The engine doesn't have to be finished before the weekend anyway as the new radiator/cooler bracket and new headlight shell/bracket are being painted tomorrow night, and she ain't going nowhere without them. With any luck be back on the road by the weekend.

Gix11
04-07-2006, 08:36 AM
It's all about body placement mate. I made my own holder tool and just held it in place with my leg as I used the bar. Changed it 3 times so far with the same method. Yea, I know 3 times in about 30,000ks is excessive but one was to deglase, and then one was to re-bloody-glase after going to far and not being able to take off at all without stalling - tip: don't deglase with a bottle of rum onboard.

04-07-2006, 11:55 AM
Yeah tried that one too Gix, still no good. So far I have 3 snapped bolts, 3 allen heads stripped (hence the impact driver allen key bits) and 2 standard socket type bolts which will have to have the haeds cut off and then removed. As well as the clutch hub nut.
All of the bolts have come out coated in this red shit, like really coated in the shit.
And yeah I'll stay away from the rum when working (should stay away from everything when drinking rum, turns me nasty)

Deano and Chubs you may be able to help , a guy i know is trying to undo a dodgy streetfighter conversion on a 95 (w?) model 1100 he is looking for some std clipons and will have a set of bars and risers available. headlight mounts and gauge mounts are there too but not very tidy (dodgy bits).

Deano

750 clip ons go underthe top triple and 1100 go above the top triple.

you cant run 750 clip ons on the 1100 triples with out changing the top triple also to 750.

if changin from 750 clip ons/triple it will hit against the 1100 headlight fairing.

the 95mod has different headlight/clock/steering damper and faring mounts than the 92mod.

to undo the streetfight mod he will have to get all 1100 parts and they will all have to be from a 94/95 mod

good luck

Thanks!I was playing with Harleys during those years (and i can't remember why)

Sorry for the thread hijack Chubs , Frame is looking good! What colour are you planing or leaving the factory scheme?

chubs
13-07-2006, 10:33 AM
The colour plan is to simply go black at this stage, or maybe gunmetal grey. Or possibly purple... i haven't really given it too much thought, i'm more concerned with getting the new headlights / bars / mirrors and getting it back on the road asap.

chubs

Plan to paint the risers and top triple-clamp black before fitting, to match the black bars.

I'm going to haveto upgrade the power of my setup at some stage and would like to know if they would fit?

chubs
18-07-2006, 12:58 PM
I got them second-hand off of deano, so i don't have the original box and specs.
I can tell you they are supposed to be the same as the ones that austreetfighter.com.au sells.
They do use standard h4 bulbs, though.

Hmm i never thought of that. Yeah you're right - it'd probably look better. I mean, not like we're putting as much strain on the bars as the MX guys would. I'll remember that for later.

And: I've got a question regarding the risers: http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2393

Okay, the headlight brackets have arrived. Very excited, but have a look at this photo.
I called stu, apparently half the brackets come raw, and half come anodised. Obviously this'll look silly on the bike. Any ideas? My idea is to sandpaper the anodising off, and give them all a coat of clear.

Deano
28-07-2006, 12:10 PM
your are right -- that is fucking stupid.

i believe you can use harsh oven cleaner that will strip the anodising. i am not sure what oven cleaner tho but i read it somewhere once before.

chubs
28-07-2006, 01:55 PM
I wasn't going to use those precise words - i'm well aware that stu is on this forum - but you're right, and for the pretty penny i paid for it, well...

Oven cleaner doesn't work - i've tried it before. I'll just spend some time with some sandpaper and chalk it up to experience.

28-07-2006, 02:19 PM
Hey Chubs,

Dumb question (yeah I'm good at those), but can't you just swap to get two the same?

chubs
28-07-2006, 03:03 PM
Not a dumb question, but i already tried. Apparently thats the way they come from the supplier: the bigger clamps are anodized, the little one's arent. And i need both big and little clamps, because my forks taper near the top. So... its time to break out the sandpaper and get busy for me!

God
28-07-2006, 03:14 PM
Bugger! Happy sanding!!!

28-07-2006, 03:28 PM

29-07-2006, 06:50 PM
Chubs, try soaking the clamps in a caustic soda solution, apparently strips off the anodising. Recomended from a good source.

chubs
31-07-2006, 09:46 AM
I soaked them in oven cleaner for an hour, didn't do all that much, and spent another hour sanding them all. It looks alright now.

And an update: the bike is (almost) all together now. Ripped off the clipons, fitted the headlights, put on the mx bars, all the cables, new brake lines, indicators, blah blah blah a million little things and here's the current result:

Big thanks to deano for swapping cables, brake lines, headlights, risers, and handlebar for my old fairings and bits - you're a champ.

Okay: For the mirrors, i've decided to go a slightly different route than the normal bar-ends, also hoping to bruise the bank balance a bit less.

Going to get a couple of brackets like this:
http://www.austreetfighter.com.au/scart/photos/127.jpg

And screw a couple of these onto them:
http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/images/maltiscross02B.JPG

Should be $12 + $50... so what do ya think?

01-08-2006, 01:48 PM
Like the mirrors mate. Do you have the matching spiked helmet?

Are the stems long enough to see around you're arms?

I recently went from bar-ends to the same set-up (My brake lever unit still had the mirror mount blank on it, just had to drill and tap it for the mirror) with a similar sized mirror to the one above, and I can't see feck-all but my arms in them.

Gix11
01-08-2006, 01:56 PM
Yea, I have the same length as well. Get used to moving about to see anything mate as your arms will be all you see if you stay still. Never been an issue for me though.........

01-08-2006, 01:58 PM
Yeah, don't know what I'm complaining about really, all I needed them for recently was to see how far Turbo had fallen behind me :D

chubs
01-08-2006, 02:20 PM
Well, if you can point me in the direction of some reasonable bar-ends that aren't $200, i'm interested. Spiked helmet - ha.

01-08-2006, 02:33 PM
Sorry, the bar-end mirrors I was using won't fit you're bars, they're from MCS and are designed for conventional thin walled steel 7/8 bars, not the thicker-walled Renthals.

I do have a spare mount (no mirror) here I can send up, if you want to look at adapting it for you're bars. Let me know.

chubs
01-08-2006, 02:47 PM
A single mount won't do - i need both mirrors (I called the RTA technical enquiries - you need 2 mirrors to be legal).
Your barends suit 7/8 bars? That's what mine are - Protaper SE (seven Eighths). Inside Diameter: 13.5mm (i measured last night)

01-08-2006, 02:58 PM
The renthals have a thicker wall than standard steel bars. I'll check the measurements tonight, if they can possibly fit I can send you the adaptor to check before spending you're money. But they are only $26 each (mount and mirror) from most bike shops.

This is what they look like (I only ran one)

check out ebay

i got some old kwaka bar ends that clamped around the outer of the bar (which is always 7/8"'s at the grips)and i had those on my protaper 7/8s on the SV

cost me 5 bucks and a bit of black paint

what the "chrome" on cheap mirrors
its generally shithouse and will rust up in about a month on the street

also check out bicycle shops
a lot of them have mirrors cheap

chubs
02-08-2006, 09:21 AM
Supercheap was a waste of time, but i guess thats expectable.
The bike shop sold me a couple of brackets that clamp around the handlebars, and give you a 10mm fitting for universal mirrors to bolt on to.
BUT i tried later on to fit these - and there isn't enought space on the straight part of the bars to fit them! damn it...

Look at your brake and clutch lever mounting points on your bike. See two bolts going through a half bar sized clamp? Well on the bandit they are exactly the same size but have and extra piece at the top which is threaded to fit your mirrors into. If you can't find Bandit ones, your local accessory shop can source after market versions of the same piece.

03-08-2006, 01:48 PM
Hmm... It'll be ok on the right hand side, but not on the left hand side. The left side doesn't have the U shaped bit which clamps on with two bolts, but rather it clamps around in one piece.

I think i'll just get an adaptor with a screw thread for the right side, and use one of davo's ones for the left, painted black of course. For the time being, until i can purchase a new clutch lever.

Davo: I'll measure it up and let you know! Thanks a million!

Or.... i could drill and tap the old bar-ends that the bike came with??? Does this sound like it'd work?

04-08-2006, 10:31 AM
That's effectively what I've got Chubs.
Exben made me up some solid, push in, extensions for my bars, which he drilled (M8) and tapped for my indicators to screw directly into. I had the extensions welded in, and drilled a slot into the middle of the bars, which is where the indicator wires feed out from. Works a treat, and gave me the wider bars I wanted.
(PS I do have to be more careful when threading my way through traffic, as the exra width of the indicators makes car mirrors / drivers elbows etc an issue)
