That was cool - tho machining an engine from an entire block of aluminium is kinda pointless :D

Why do you say that??
An awesome way to develop a new engine or to build a mega HP drag motor.
Billet blocks are far superior to cast ones.

True Ben - I've been staring at aluminium extrusion profiles all day and had a mass production head on.
Slow process - but true - it would kick ass for that stuff.

Imagine the crank shaft you could make with that. Bugatti style

That is just stunning.
Amazed at the machine that can actually do that and the people that write the programe for the machine.

Does anyone know if the engine was finished and made to run or was it an egineering exercise and a stunning one at that

I can only imagine how long it took to write the program for that thing.

Read my mind, probably longer than it took to pump out the first motor. But the advantage is you only program once, then pump out as many as you want.

you would be spewing if you fucked up 1 number and at the end of the machining it cut the block in half.

Yea, what if the cutting tool breaks?

You can get software that writes the cnc program for you - you just chuck the model in and it works it out itself...

Yea, what if the cutting tool breaks?I seen alot of inserts break on the CNC lathes at work and it can cause all kinds of headaches, smashing up tool holders and allsorts. Some of our lathes have sensors that will pick up if you break a drill or reamer and just stop, they're the good ones coz it's less fuck'n around to get it going again.

I Am not no enineering wizard and this stuff just leaves me in utter awe at what can be achieved with machines easily pleased maybe but fuck the people that run and set up these machines my hat goes off to you big time.
