View Full Version : Does my Buell fit in here? G'day from joesbuell

G'day all here's some pictures of my 1998 Buell S3T thats been transformed into a S1 twin tail mutant!

It has XB a Buell front end
XB swingarm and wheels
Mods are quite extensive but have been carried out in a way to try and keep it all Buell. I'm waitng on an order of parts to come from the US , post some more pictures as I progress.

I hope I've been successful!

Colour will be Pearl white with orange Buell decals on the tank and Sunset Orange wheels and frame.

If your unfamiliar with the early model Buells they had an extention/pull rear shock wich sucked! I've adapted an XB Buell swingarm and shock onto my Buell. I got rid of the plastic oil tank so that the shock had some where to go. Oil is now in the swingarm. Battery has been rotated so that it nearly lays flat and a new battery box made out of chrome moly sheet. Modified XB headers then wrapped them. Custom made exhaust pipes 2/1/2 2" straight through.
There's a link in my profile to more detailed changes if anyones interested.

Enjoy

Jodie

This fly screen wont be used I have an XBSTT one on order.

Welcome aboard mate. Looks like you've put a lot of work into this baby, you must be a big Buell fan? The tail end conversion was a must mate as that, without doubt, is the best one they brought out. Enjoy the site mate.

Well I took my Buell for a shake down run, I did around 550klms, from Kingaroy to Caloundra returning via Nambour, Mapleton Maleny etc etc. And everything was sweet!
I met up with a fellow Bueller, who happens to be a top bloke and an illustrator! He took a couple of pictures of my Buell and before I had gottten home had photo shopped them in the colours I wanted.

I think he has done an awesome job! :)

so here they are

I don't mind the red but because the left side of the swingarm is a lot of real estate it would be too much!

I'm hoping to have all the parts ready for the powder coaters this weekend.

You'll have to post some pic's of the project!

I pulled the forks apart and made an adapter up so I could mount it in the lathe, used my power file to smooth out, then I gave it a little polish. They ill be powder coated black.
I removed a little extra material from the mounting area as the powder coat goes on at around 70 microns thick :)

Here's some pics of the leg in the lathe!

I made a mount for the license plate, I think it looks pretty cool.

I'd like to fit a cheese grater out of an XB lightning to it(who has one laying around?). It needs some tidying up then paint.

Good work mate well done, wish I could use that photoshop still can't work out how my bike should look when I am finished, I have a theme in mind but not too sure how far to take it or how ghey it could look if I fuck it.

thats bloody beautiful joe but how come you never left the forks polished

joesbuell
01-06-2008, 12:01 PM
:DThanks Chaps.

Rod the main reason i spun the forks in the lathe was to remove the little ridges so that when i got them powder coated it was a nice flat finish. As I ride the bike every day and in all weather i don't want much if any polished metal, to much hard work to maintain. Eventually when i rebuild the engine all the cases will be powder coated black and the chrome push rod tubes done in a gunmetal colour, the force winder inlet manifold will be done too.

cheers
Joe

joesbuell
02-06-2008, 08:38 AM
By the way no offense taken, It may have a Harley donk in it but thats all! Frame is Italian, wheels Chinese, forks and rear shock Jap(Showa) brakes are Nissin and the swingarm is made by Brembo. You don't go calling an Aprilia RSV or BMW F800 or Buell 1125R a Rotax just because there engines are from them now do ya;):D

what absolute insanity, that is a wickid build. very neat work. i have long hoped to fit that XBS sub frame to my blade eventually, not at all tryin to copy what you've done, it's an awsome short frame even with double seat it is well worthy as a fighter subframe. i'd love to build a removable frame for my build. your build has taken the wickid parts of the new buell but left the new style fat frame that most buell die hards never wanted. i have to say i like the dark color instead of red on the swing arm though.
are the XBS frames hard to come by? i'd like a buell one as they have the nice fat alley look which would match the look of the old fireblade

Thanks for the comments chaps, Sorry I won't be at AFR as I have plans to go to the Buell muster later in the month.

For those interested my Buell will be in next months Rapid Bikes magazine with Rennie doing the write up. And those who know of my bike through the Buell forums will see I left so many build details out as I forgot to tell Rapid! whoops....

Dockter I never bought a trashed XB for the parts, most were from ebay and new genuine parts plus all the stuff I whipped up.

Here's some links

sorry about the poor atempt at the burn out! tyre sliped on extension lead! thats my excuse!!!

The Buell Muster isn't until two weeks after the AFR mate, you'd have time to lose the hangover and get a new tyre by then! Doug from Buellers is even going to be doing a stand there: http://buellersdownunder.com/showthread.php?t=3309 and your bike would go great in the Show n Shine.

so jodie, did u change the bike geometry, the rake, the wheelbase etc.

p.s. nice u r back!

joesbuell
10-03-2009, 09:34 PM
The wheel base is 2 inches longer, the rear ride height has been raised to increase turn in and the front XB triples are 5mm closer to the frame than the stock triples. I'm also running a 120/65 17 Pilot Power front tyre instead of the 120/70 17 this also helps sharpen the steering. It handles and has better ground clearance than stock :D I've done 17500k's since Feb last year when I got it all back together and loving it. The bike has done just over 70000k's in total. Not bad for a tractor[:p]

not bad indeed, u must have had some hot time ridin' her, meanin' the rear cyl :D. and u r a maniac mate if stocky rake of 23 ain't sharp enough for ya. what tubing size r u using for the frame and the sssa?
:)

joesbuell
11-03-2009, 09:12 AM
The rear subframe I made out of 3/4" chro/molly from here http://www.airportmetals.com/stocklist.htm and will probably use 1" tube for the main tubes on the sssa and 3/4" for the supports, it will also house the oil tank. I will use either use a triumph rear hub or a vfr so I can use a car wheel. It will look similar to the Ducati monster one only in reverse because of the right side drive. Plus I'll probably go chain drive.

joesbuell
11-03-2009, 09:14 AM
The rear cyclinder is no bother for me as I'm 6'5" tall and the leg misses it :) Stock steering angle for this model is 25 degrees.

and another question. i've bought an xb front wheel and a brake rotor separetely, now could u tell me, if the rotor fixes straight bolt-on to the wheel, 'cos there r square chases? and what's the bolts thread? i tried m8x1.25, but it didn't screw in by hand... just wasn't about to screw the thread... :D
