Some years before WW2 Harley sold an entire factory to the Rokuyo (?) group, and they shipped the entire thing to Japan, and started building bikes, so it's actually a Harley built in Japan, a bit like Goldwings built in America are still Honda's. And they are extremely rare, especially the WW2 ones. There's a well known bikie in Sydney who has one of'em, the most complete example of only 3 left in the world. Has a gum mounted on a side car, ammo boxes etc etc, and weighs a fucking ton.

PS do you have any more info on them Frankie?

Yeah, I was in China in 92', visiting the in-laws, and those things were everywhere, all of'em had side cars though. Tried a spin on one, and the scooter brigade was travelling faster. Tried to bring one back as a curio, but the local authorities wouldn't allow it.

I knew Harley Davidson had sold the drawings for the 750cc sidevalve to the Japanese around 1932 (didn't know they got the factory)..Strangely i had read that around 1981,six months later i was on Bougainville Island, staying in a village and a local asks if i wanted to see a bike.
You can guess i was a little surprised to see what looked to be a HD with side car but it had Japanese writing on the engine sidecover.
It is probably still sitting there today.

Edit..I found this.

quote:Type 97 Motorcycle
Introduced Year : 1937
Weight : 500 Kg
Dimensions: 2.7 x 1.7 x 1.2(h) m
Speed (max) : 70 km/hr
Engine : Air-cooled Gasoline Engine 1274cc 24 HP
Manufacturer : Rikuo Nainen Co.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Japan imported motorcycles of Harley-Davidson, but the Sankyo Co.(later Rikuo Nainen Co.) bought the licence from Harley-Davidson in 1935 and produced them in Japan. A military model called Type 95 Motorcycle was developed from the Harley-Davidson's motorcycle. It has a higher body than the commercial model and used magnetic plugs. Type 97 is an improved model of Type 95. It has a carriage with a powered wheel.

Military motorcycles were used in Japan and China and hardly used in the Pacific. They are not fit to the rough terrain in the Pacific.
