As far as I know all trades are still desperately needed...try looking up Skills in Demand on any Aus Gov website.
Put it this way...I met so many people that said 'Oh I wish I had done that when I was younger'....I was not gonna be one of them.:D[8D]:D

Welcome aboard Steve. Don't you think it is funny that 220 years ago you lot thought you'd dump all of your human filth here and now you're flock'n over here like flies to a turd.
On the bright side if you do decide to come over at least you'll live in the country that won the ashes. lol

Hi
am frae penicuik nr edinburgh...so all cricket related stories dinna worry me ;)
Most of the people sent to Aus in the first wave were Scots...and
laffing at the English is a national pastime up here :) ( lol).
DOnt know where to move to yet ...have been hunting around websites.
Looking for somewhere where I can buy /build a house with a reasonable bit of land ...and where there is loads of work ;)
Any job offers greatfully received . ;)
Looking to bring the bikes over ...the 750lc will hopefully be ready in time for summer ( here) . The engine is now together ...and ready for me to pick up:) the gs1000s is gonna get done before I come over .Its stripped ready for powdercoating and painting.
will get some pics on later today ;)
has anyone brought bikes over?
How did u all get started in moving over?..did u go through one of those websites/newspaper places...or did you do it yourselves?
How much did it cost?..or is there any places worth looking at for info.

oh aye ah no it , anyhoo plenty of work where we are just north of Sydney, obviously loads of work in Sydney,{we re about 90kms[55miles]away]cheaper to buy /build up here Sydneys about 40% dearer maybe [have u done drainage? thers a paddy mob whove probably got work and there just drilling holes in the sewage pipes to do recycled water soon]
bring some tattie scones,an scotch pies way ye
:]
as for emigrating if uv got the time do the paperwork your self do it
but if not try first call in london they can do all the leg work for u but they charge about 600 quid
depends on wich visa u want log on to dimia .gov .au for all visa info and downloadable forms my missus is an aussie so my visa took only 6 weeks to come thru
i dont think u have to pay import tax on the bikes but theirs plenty of ppl on here can tell u more about that
i shipped my stuff thru a mob in Liverpool but u should be able to find a local firm thatll sort u out it takes about 6 weeks for ur stuff to arrive here and theres a day sorting out the customs and stuf at this end
do get the DVLA to issue u with export certs for the bikes before u leave and if ur comin to NSW look up importing vehicles on th RTA site think its RTA.nsw .au

If your under 40, not dieing, and have a skill,
you should get in no problem.
Best to go for is an open "Permanent Resident" visa,
so your not tied to any trade, area or sponsor.
I migrated as a skilled Printer (24 years in the trade)
Been here nearly 3 years. Never want to be stuck indoors again,
so im retraining in Civil Constuction / Earthworks.
Plenty of work and plenty of money here if you'll make the effort.

I get it back soon to start the hard work of fitting it to frame and doing exhausts /wiring etc ;)
the v4 is my pet though...took him to long to get to this stage ...so started it last week
Unfortunatly I do have family ( wifes side ...and I believe mine too ) but I have never met them :(
What I am looking for is cheapish housing ( probably better to rent?? ) to start off...good area ie safe...plenty work...and a decent garage ;)

what sort of money do plumbers earn over there>?
Are building wages /conditions good?
Tony Nitrous
04-01-2007, 06:00 AM
I would say that the Building trade is pretty good in
QLD and has been for a while. No sign of the bubble bursting
either, lots of new projects on the go.
I know folk taking home $500/$600 a week (200 UK pounds)
then again our Labourers can (and do) take home over $1000
(400 pounds)if they do a few early starts and work a 5 and
half day week.
After 6 weeks here in a new job I was earning MORE than I did
as a Printer after 23 years in the Trade. Yes, there are some poor wages
and low paid jobs here, just like the UK, but life's what you make it.
Brisbane is not the cheapest place to live, I could half my rent
by moving out to the sticks, but would probabley half my wages too.
2 bits of advise...
1st... DO IT !!
2... Queensland [8D]

here in mackay its booming housing is going off...mines are expanding but rent and housing prices are bullshit cause of the mines, real estate agents think everyone here is a miner so they bump up the prices......it might b worth a look for u. if you get into a mine you might make it worth your trip if you don't mind working away.

Try logging on to www.immi.gov.au. If you have qulifications as a plumber shouldn't be a prob for you to apply for a Skilled workers Visa. I'm currently here from Malta on a working holiday Visa, but I will soon be doing an electricians course and hopefully try to get in through the Skilled Worker Visa myself.
If you not exactly sure what to do, try logging on to www.migrationexpert.com or there are also plenty of other sites that will help you out (for a fee of course). Need any info, just send me n email as I am currently going through the same process.

does that mean I gotta stay in this country...or do I have to smuggle them over ..lol
How do u mean its hard as buggery...?...expensive?...hard to mot??
The companies I tried are gonna want about 6k uk to get me and my family over as my daughter is working she is considered an adult now..grr ( then theres the bikes ;) )
Looking at doing it through the Aus government...anyone tried that route?..or is it a nightmare frae hell?

My Rent is $330 a week
(about 132 UK pounds)
Everyone tells me thats expensive, but if you want to
live somewhere nice, Double Garage/Aircon/Pool/nice area/
easy travel/near city/public transport/ etc you pay the price.
Yes, I could buy a house for less, but not as good as this,
or in the area's I like.
Having delt with Australian Migration and Customs Im glad i
sold Car/Bikes/Furniture..everything.. and turned up with a
suitcase. I miss my old Katana but if your starting in a new
Country with no Friends / Family / Home / Job / Furniture /
Bank account / etc... how much hassle do you want ?

But it [u]is</u> possible to bring out a bike. As long as it would pass a legal mot (ie no rule bending) it can be 'Compliance tested'. Trouble is its gonna cost import duty, test fee ($3-500) plus rego for each one...could end up v expensive. With hindsight the wife would have sold hers cheap in the uk first....by the time she got it here, rode it for 6mnths and then sold it she lost heaps.
Jockney Rebel
06-01-2007, 10:17 AM
iknow how u feel steve i sold everything before i came [includin a cosworth granada] try to keep schtum about emigratin when ur sellin stuf i got stitched sommat rotton by so called "friends "just before i left[V]
bring the lc engine in bits ? maybe
there are A LOT of decent bikes out here and most of them are very clean [no road salt ] :D:D
i take home $650-900 a week depending on o/t and [im only a mobile service tech for PIRTEK ]
my rent is 300 for a 3 bed bungalow the sort ud find in say ...Brighton or somewhere like that im 10 mins from the sea and 1hr from Sydney
ill send u a pic of the house if i cant upload it here
my brother recently moved to NZ he was used to Taking home 1000 quid a week as a project manager now he takes 1100 bucks but hes actually better off cause u dont have ..
poll tax [saves u 30 quid $75 a week ]
GST is only 10% [not like our VAT 17.5% saving about 50Quid a week for average family].
no tv licence fee [another 165 quid a year.
income tax is about he same [in the first year youll get a rebate from both govts ..make sure you sort your cis4s before u come out ]
vehicle tax etc is about the same as back home {some of the other states are cheaper tho]
average food bill is about $110 a week
my phone bill is $70 a month [and i phone home a lot!]
foxtel[like Sky] is $88 a month about the same as back home
internet access is about $50 a month
petrol is around $1.20 a litre[50p !! remember when we paid this ??]
pubilc transport is soooo cheap train ride to Sydney off peak is ..wait for it about 8 bucks ..60miles for 3 quid
apart from all that
the food is to die for [its all grown /caught here ]
the amount of space here is phemonmenal
the population is only 20 million in a country the size of europe and nth africa [ britian fits in to NSW 4 times!]
oh and parrots flyin around yer backyard [took a bit of gettin used to ][?]
so its a bit of a slog getting here but take all the help u can get ie family sponsers here
its well worth it up here on the coast we even have a gathering of the clans every august [around the Glasgow weekend holiday][8D]
have a look on ebay i bought my cb900 on it for 750 bucks all it needed was a starter[8D]
the only drawback here is european cars are so expensive[ they reckon Peugoets are prestige cars !!]
anyway the pros far outweigh the cons mate i arrived with bugger all money [1500 quid and im doin ok ]
if i can do it anyone can :D

I remember when I was a lowly backpacker a few years before I moved here a Cockney guy I met in Cairns in a mark2 Ford Escort had been running from the authorities for nearly 6 years! He would just drive his escort into town and party the time away until he either ran out of work (he set up marquees and party gear - hence always at them) or the government got wind of where he was. A modern day fugitive. Funny guy as well. That was over 12 years ago, so if you see a beaten up Mark2 Ford escort roll into your town with a ropey looking cockney geezer lookng for work in party hire, buy him a beer for me.

Australia is a BRILLIANT place for a holiday,
just remember life's a bit different when your stuck in

Just booked mine.
You will find cheaper, but check out Singapore Airlines.
They do a "direct" flight with only 1 stop in Singapore
which is a decent airport anyway. If you book the right
flights you only wait 3 or 4 hours and your off again.
If you havent done the UK/OZ trip before just be carefull
of how many stops / Refuels etc some of the cheaper flights
have and how long your hanging around for.
Visit Brissy and i'll get the beers in Mate ;)

I had a look about for flights and i found one from heathrow to Melbourne direct and then on to Adelaide where i am going to for £465.
I thought it was wrong so I checked again and it was right and that was quoted with BA and Quantas and I could get it even cheaper by £100 if i opted to stop over at singapore or qualalumpa?
