Hey guys, I have the chance to buy a 1995 CBR900RR in real nice shape with only 9,500 miles for cheap. I just wanted to get an idea of what can be done with these bikes. Post up any and all CBR900RR's. Thanks

Do a net search. The cbr900 is one of the most popular fighter bases there is, along with gixxers. I found it fairly easy to convert as well as there is heaps of room under the tank for electrics and the coolant resevoir is in the rear of the bike.

Do it.

Thanks guys.. I'm gonna buy it. Can any of you guys explain to me how to shorten the tail section like the ones in the photos. Is it just a matter of cutting it off and making my own undertail or is there a much better way to do it? Sorry if it's a stupid question but I'm new to streetfighters.

Hey Smokey, Mine started off as an R6 tail unit on the original honda subframe. Subframe got chopped and raised (pull the fairing off, you'll see this is relatively easy) then I hacked into the R6 plastic, raising and shortening it. Teach yourself to plastic weld... which means lots of quality time with your soldering iron and melting plastic. Then crack out a tin a bog.

Thanks for your help. I can plastic weld but I'm not very good at welding any type of metal. I have a few friends that I can get to help me though.. I'm gonna give it hell and see what I can do. I'll post up some pics once I get started. So far, I just stripped her down and listed the plastics on e-bay.

She's under way.. Question for you guys that have fightered a blade, when you remove all the stock gauges, does the fan still kick on for the radiator without the temp gauge? I'm assuming it does but I just wanted to make sure. I will only be running a small aftermarket speedo, nothing else.

Greeny

Yep.
My 93 Blade has no gauges and the fans still works just fine.
pretty sure the fan is controller by a thermo switch in the radiator itself/

I got most of the wiring done today and everything layed out the way I want it. Found a place for the horn behind the radiator and got most of the harness tucked away in front of the air box. New LSL bar kit, extended clutch cable and stainless lines look good too. I just need to decide on a headlight and then I'm moving my attention to the rear end of the bike.

Gix11
23-11-2006, 11:13 AM
The fat front balances out the fuck off fat back tyre. We came to the conclusion a while back that a standard size wheel on the front with that size back wheel would be virtually unrideable, but add a fat on the front and the surface area is not as offset, giving better handling. Never tried riding anything like that with the dual fats so this is only a guess.

Thanks for the link and pics Outlaw. Looks to me like the tail section can make or break the overall look of the machine. I'm not sure about the turned up look of the tail on many of them. I want a shorter and cleaner tail without looking like it's been kicked in the ass or run into from behind. I'm going to look very close at every pic and see if I can finalize my plan. I'll post pics once I start cutting.

As you guys can probably see, this was my first attempt at a new tail for my 900RR. This is just a mock up as I would use a one piece race tail for the final build but I'm not very happy with it so I think this idea is getting scrapped. It's better than the stock look but still not exactly what I'm looking for. I used a broom handle to show the height I'm going for but I'm also trying to keep the lines clean at the same time. I'm going to keep working on it and maybe try another the R6 tail section mentioned by FighterMC to see what it looks like. Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Gix11
27-11-2006, 12:33 PM
If you want that sort of height your going to have to do some subframe mods mate. Either that or you'll have one fat back end to make up the difference. Your half way there anyway as you have a bolt-on subframe. Try and find the complete subframe and plastics if you want a production made tail.

Yep, that's my next step. I cut about 8 inches off the rear of the subframe, now I think I need to separate the upper and lower rails to change the angle of the frame to get the height I want. Once I do that, I'll see what tailsection will work best and try again. At least I know what I want, hard part is getting there.

I actually just bought an R1 frame that I'm going to cut and modify to work on the 900RR. My plan was to just modify my stock Honda subframe but when I bought the 00-01 R1 race tail, I figured I'd see if I could find a subframe to match. The 00-01 R1's have welded subframes so I had to buy the full frame and I'll have to cut off what I need. It should still save me allot of work and look much cleaner in the end. I'll have to decide how to mount the tail once I get the frame work done but I'm sure it will involve adding some mouting tabs and an undertail.

..and remember, you don't have to line the front of the plastics up with the tank. If you want to make it a bit shorter at the back slide it past and below the tank and chop the seat up. That's what I did on mine:

My photo edit skills suck but this is where I was thinking of trimming it. In the photo the fairing is as far forward as possible. The frame is wider than the fairing at that point. I don't want to change the angle and I would like it to line up with the bottom of the tank. I think the only way is to trim it. It's only about 2 inches and I can cut it parallel line to the down line of the frame. What do you guys think?

Smokey74
06-12-2006, 12:00 PM
I just noticed you guys seem to have the shorter tail off a 02-03 R1. Maybe I need to re-think this.

Gix11
06-12-2006, 01:29 PM
The blue one you see on my bike is the '98 model R1 mate. As for trimming yours, that's a good idea, but might take a bit of mastercrafting to get some new mounting holes/points at the front without it cracking from vibration as so many after thought holes do in plastics.

Yeah, I thought about that too that's why I bought a fiberglass fairing. I figured I could add some tabs for under the seat as opposed to drilling holes on the side like they are now. I may just see if I can find a newer model fairing like yours and test fit it before I do anything to this one. Thanks for you insight..

That's a bad ass bike..

I definately agree, my 00-01 tail looks smoother than the squared off 02-03 version. I just found a nice undertail with integrated tailight that sould look great too. Things are starting to come together. You wouldn't happen to have any pics of your modified subframe without the plastics? I'm trying to keep the tail low enough to fit a nice seat instead of just a foam pad but I also want it high enough that it looks real agressive like yours.

Smokey74

You guys are going to think I'm crazy but I've changed my mind and have decided to scrap the R1 tail idea. Now, I have a subframe and a fiberglass race tail I'll need to sell but my mind is made up... I'm building my own rear section and exhaust. I want to do something that's in my head and see how it comes out. Wish me luck..

P.S. The new idea involves Nitros, sheet aluminum, LED's, and a cheese grader.;):D

I have no idea what it would cost to ship this stuff but if anyone wants or needs the 00-01 frame and race tail let me know. I have $250 in the two and you pay shipping.

Boxer is a member here mate. His Bladerod is for sale (or maybe sold now - not sure). He has a new project on the go as well.

Scrapyard, I fuckin' love your bike mate! That is the perfect fighter look to me. Now, tell me, what is that back wheel. I keep seeing it on bikes and I never thought to ask.

Thanks Gix. 17x7 Ricer rim ment for a Honda bolt pattern. The VFR arms use the same bolt pattern as the Civics and such. Friend of mine had a pair setting in his yard. He was nice enough to give them to me. called up the local tuner shop to see if he had a hub adapter, witch by some meraculous turn of events was a freebe as well, and put it all together.

Thanks gents,
Smoky, looks like you have a start to a Bladerod styled project there.

Decided I couldn't part with it. Main reason I was selling it before was I had been offered a job and Visa in the US. I got shafted and that all fell through, so I'm back in Sydney and have put several more KMs on Bladerod :)

Hey there Boxer, Did you black'n out the motor and frame
A. Was it hard , does the block and frame need to all be undercoated first before the paint and B. Is it something that can be done at home from a Bunnings compressor as Im sure that a shop will want a pretty penny for the spray job

I hope you don't mind if I use your idea?? I'll change a few things but you still got the ball rolling. Love the look and I have a buddy that powder coats. Hope mine comes out 1/2 as nice as yours.

I dug deep to find this old thread but I figured it was the perfect place to post up a new pic of my blade. I'm still working on a rear fender but she's pretty much done for now. It's crazy how many times I changed my mind on the way I wanted things. In the end, I'm totally stoked with the outcome. The fender will be a Harley flat style fender cut down and mounted from the left side only using the chain guard mounting points. Flat black of course.. It should be sweet. It doesn't compare to some of the blades I've seen on here, but for me, I think it came out well.

Thanks..

Mine is off a VFR750. It's slightly longer than the stock 900RR swingarm. I think the VFR800 arm has a slightly different width at the pivot point but is the same length. I'm not 100% sure though. FighterMC would probably know.

Nice one Smokey, that came up well mate. I love that rear wheel and "scrapyard" tells me it was just a simple Honda Buzz Box wheel and they're everywhere. Really suits the blade just like it does on his. The stubby tail like Bladerod and the rear wheels sets it apart again. Like it.

Smokey as i said mate the bike turned out fooking excellent.
Darn stick with a 750 arm mate.
the 800 one has a few more mods to be done
on it to make it fit including grinding
some of the frame away.
Exben is the man in this field.

My wheel is actually Scraps old wheel. Also, Scraps sold his bike a while ago and it's now called Da Black Sewer Rat with a totally different look. I love the bobber look, but I also love the wide tire SSSA look, so I went with both. The dirty bars and single round light kinda give it that "is it stock" look and the stock colors really trip people out. Most people (outside the fighter world) have no idea what it is and think it's something they can buy.. Well, they can but only from me..[:p]
