Finally sorting out the tail

The big fat tail on my Bandit has been shitting me for years and a visit from an enthusiastic mate, bourbon and an angle grinder are a dangerous combination...

I ended up cutting about 8 inches off the subframe, ditched the plastic and was left with an ugly double seat.
A bit of fiddle-farting around I managed to modify and fit a TLS seat I had and decided to do a bit of shaping with some foam I scored from a kerbside clean-up to make a new tail(this is a big $$$ build all the way).

I have prepped it for glassing and threw the wheel on to get some perspective before I reached the point of no return (moreso).

I am fairly happy with how it is going but I may need to put it on a bit of a diet before I am finished.

I ditched the rear shock a while back for a 'Busa one. A cheap upgrade which bolted straight in and made a huge difference.

Nice.....hard work always pays off m8 [8D] So when folks are checking out your bike and tryin to suss out the seat unit you can say "I MADE THAT" and walk off smug ;)

IMHO the seat could loose a few pounds and would give it a better more racer profile but fuck all comfort [B)]

I could mate, but I made it to fit a chopped 2nd Gen frame so it wouldn't fit on a 1st Gen.
I have an older frame but it is currently stock so that is no help either.

Bugger, I really like that tail piece. Where did you get the foam and how/ what did you use to file it down without little bits of shit going everywhere.

Little bits of shit went everywhere. It like it was snowing in my garage for a week or two.
I just grabbed some foam that people were chucking out. Mostly packing for TVs, stereos etc and just glued the blocks together with some PVA and cut a lot away with a hacksaw blade and shaped the rest with a rasp.

If you want to do it spot on, use High Density Foam. It's not like your packing stuff that balls up and chunks fall out, it's, as it says, high denisty so will stay solid and can be shaped with a file and sand paper. I get mine from a local themes & special effects factory that does shop internals and theme park rides. Check out something similar close to you. I got a block big enough to do a headlight unit and talk piece for $20.

I was actually at a foam suppliers yesterday as Al and myself were talking of getting a piece last week end and the guy sells this HD foam for .......wait for it....$300 a cubic farkn metre
so I explained that we will get back to him at a later stage

I had heard prices were around that mark for the HD stuff, hence why I chose to go with the other.
I found it very easy to work with though. It didn't ball up when I filed it and when I glued several thinner pieces together to get a big block the glued edges between them were a good guide to keep it all symmetrical.

$300 a cubic metre! What the fuck? Don't go to actual suppliers, go to guys that use it. A bit like going to a boat building yard and asking for some resin, they have shit loads in bulk. The mob I go to buy the foam in massive bulk size to make full pillars and false trees etc, so a block to do a tail end is just an off cut to them and they're more than happy to get money for it. Look up theme specialists or special effects places.

Ah CC off the subject slightly but i had a mate of yours at work today (Steve Western i think from memory)also mentioned knowing Burke and Mick from post and he showed me a shot of a 1100 slabbie fighter that hes building and apparently your helping him put an R6 tail on it :D

Common mate spill the beans and get some pics up of the build or get him to pull his finger and get posting himself he'd already said he'd had a poke around here before.;)
