View Full Version : The Drag racing adventures of TurboKat & Deano

While on the piss at Shano's party on Sat'dy night, a cunning plan was hatched whereby it was decided that our 2 aforementioned Heroes would attend the 4th annual Two Wheel Torque motorcycle dragracing event at Heathcote Raceway the following day. [8D]
After approx. 3.5 hrs sleep, yours truly awoke mildly hungover & commenced preparations for said event, my mate Mark was bringing his 750/4 powered Post Classic Sidecar outfit along for a thrash (to practise his starts really) & turned up with the Outfit & my ZX9 Racebike already loaded, Deano turned up 15 mins later & we were away, 1 1/2 hrs later we arrived at Heathcote ready to race. :)
Truth be told, none of us actually knew it was the TWT event, we thought it was just another Test & Tune day so we were surprised to see so many bikes there, it was run alongside the normal T&T program so there were about 20 - 25 cars & maybe 40 or so bikes.
It's a pretty laid back deal at Heathcote, scrutineering consisted of "Is it safe mate?" & there were some bloody rough & ready units racing I can tell you - still nobody got hurt (except for 1 Asian fellow but more on that later) You just jump into the queue in the staging lanes wherever you want & nobody says boo, as I said, a very relaxed vibe, no power hungry officials, big egos or dramas. :)
Deano & I had about half a dozen runs together & a few seperately as well, I had a go in Mark's Chair which was interesting to say the least, 100 mph with your face about 6 inches off the ground & no control over what's going on.
Towards the end of the day they had a bracket type DYO elimination event for the TWT trophy which was an unexpected bonus, poor Deano got knocked out in the first round (by me) when he choked
& stalled it on the line, I managed to make it through all the elim's & into the final against a bloody Hardly of all things & to cut a short story shorter - I fuckin LOST [:0] ......... oh, the shame [V]:( They still gave me a trophy for Runner Up though & interviewed me & Harley Boy for the show which should send their ratings through the roof, I had my ASF T shirt on for the interview but it was about minus 2 degrees so had to wear a jacket as well (Sorry Gix, I'm a weak prick) I tried to keep the jacket open a bit so you could see the logo at least. My mate Mark got the 1st place trophy for the Sidecar class as well against some stiff opposition - he was the only entrant! [:o)]
Mike from OCD was there as well, racing about 1/2 a dozen different bikes - lucky Bugger!
Me & Deano had a ball, for $40 we got about a dozen runs in, got to watch some quick cars & bikes, smell some quality tyre smoke, talk some quality shit & really give our bikes the berries, I'm keen to go again nextime.
Best numbers for the day were;
Me - .41 R/T, 1.92 60', 7.2 1/8 mile, 11.01 @ 130 mph.
Deano - .51 R/T, 2.0 60', 7.7 1/8 mile, 11.6 @ 121 mph.
In case Rexie's interested, the Chair ran 14.0 @ 104 mph 2 up.
Also worthy of a mention is that in all our side by side runs, Deano's 1127cc Gixer NEVER beat my 899cc Kawasaki :D
The Asian chap I mentioned before turned up in a Ricer 200SX or summat & a Yam R1Z import (tricky Spondon style tube frame & v-twin 250cc 2 stroke) First, he stuck his car into the wall HARD whilst trying to drift it in a straight line [:o)] & 1 hour later, he got blown off his bike at the end of the strip WHILE STANDING ON THE TANK!!!! [xx(]:([V][}:)] - what a fuckwit! It's lucky he isn't an ASF member or Iceman wouldn't be anywhere near the Biggest Tool anymore. :D
Drag racing is heaps of fun, I recommend everyone try it at least once if they can, but take it from me, it'll be a lot easier if you have a cooling fan, a sidestand, a starter motor & a flywheel. [V]
Keep an eye out on TWT in about 3 weeks for the coverage of the event & to see my shiny head on telly! ;)
The pics are too big to post but I'll email 'em to Gix & he'll put 'em up for me I'm sure, Deano also has some pics.
ZX9R - 1
GSXR 11 - 0
:D
I reckon we should organise an ASF crew for the next one - anyone keen?

Fuck!
I was all prepared to go on Saturday night and pulled the pin on Sunday morning, thinking it would've been called off due to rain!

Glad you guys had fun and will certainly attend the next major meet up there! Want to try get a flat 12 sec pass on the little Hornet!
Did Mike run the matt black ZX9 (has TWT stickers on it) with the swingarm extensions? Just tell me i'm a tool if it's your bike, turbokat!
Daz

TurboKat
12-06-2006, 10:45 PM
Yeah Daz, he had that black 9 out for a run, no it's not mine, I had a chat to him about it. He was running 10.5s on it. Weather was pretty much spot on, about 4 x 5 min delays for VERY light 30 sec. mistings.
What I found really interesting was in my last 2 runs at around 5.20pm the air got REALLY cold & damp & my bike was pulling the front wheel up a foot & a half in 3rd at 3/4 track!! [:p] I'd done heaps of runs all day & it never did that 'til the air got that cold, shows the efficiency of Mr Kawasaki's legendary Ram Air system I reckon & the effect cold, dense air has on horsepower.

Funny the effect a day of racing has on people, after the racing finished, Deano & I were discussing the possibilities of a Team ASF Dragbike ! (maybe a GSXR chassis with a Kwaka motor :D)

Nah Oz, it was a combination of a severe lack of power & skill ;)

the asian guy in the car and the asian guy on the bike were two different people mate (i know, i know, they all look the same)

the guy on the bike is one of the young up and comming stunters in melb, he has only been doing it for about 6 months and the poor bugger gets blown off his bike doing a jesus tank stand and half knakers it (he was ok though) but he will be back trying his hand again real soon though.

other than that apparently it was frikkin cold with the wind blowing (bom said 0-1 deg with wind chill) i was a wus and stayed in my nice warm house.

and dont worry, asf will get a good plug when i wear my 'g'day officer' tshirt when john finally drags me on the show (what the hell i am gonna talk about i dont know)

Deano
13-06-2006, 12:43 PM
it was a great day indeed. but my 125hp wasn't enough to overcome the 152hp that Darrens Kwaka has.

but i gotta say well done darren you deserved to be the first looser! the other guy ran to within a 0.1 of his dial in time. hard to beat that sort of consistancy

got some photos that i will stick up.

And don't worry guys we all no that i let turbokat win. I felt sorry for him as the kawasaki's never win anything;)

You got some good pics there Deano, good job. [8D]
My last run was at 7.2 degrees & 68% humidity, no wonder it was lifting the front wheel !! According to all my time slips, the warmest it got was 11.3 degrees at 1.30pm, no wonder we were all whingeing about being cold - we WERE fucking cold! [V]

Oh & Chalk, you're spot on, we ARE both bald AND beautiful. [:X]

Nice pic of my old bike there Deano :D

Its usually a fun day out & the lack of formality seems to cut thru a lot of bs.
Pity about the cool day, at least this one wasn't rained out like the last couple of TWT days .
If your going to do it again i'll try to get there!

the bike belongs to phill (the production manager - or sumfink like that - for two wheel torque) ocd does the work on it by way of sposorship.

and 10.5 from a stock engined zx9r is pretty bloody impressive, when they start mesiing with the engine the bloody thing will fly
