Mate, just make sure your oil return to engine is higher on the turbo than where it enters the engine. i presume you returning it to the sump. if its too low you will be smokin. Headers look good mate. Remember tho if you go too big with header diameter you will slow exhaust gas speed down and thats not good for a turbo engine. What are you doing with your fuel delivery system?

Use a scavenge pump for oil return, or alternatively, set up a remote res with pump and radiator. This works good on my z.

Kinda just making it up as I go along Oz. Don't know much about turbo charging so I'm researching it as I do it. I'm gunna try and use the standard carbs and will start on some kind of airbox arrangment next week.

I'm gunna run a small oil cooler but aren't sure weather I need an eletric pump. Any surgestions Willow?

It's going on this-

if you keep the turbo as high as possible it will save you lots of hassles. standard carbs should be fine. try to keep the plenum x 2 of the capicity of your engine. malpasi non efi rising rate fuel pressure regulator is best and VL turbo fuel pump is perfect. always run your fuel filter after the malpasi. you will need a hi flow fuel tap, but your standard one should be able to be modified. you will need to run fuel psi 2-3 psi above the pressure in your plenum . there are lots of things to consider but its really not that hard. i cant wait to see your face after the first ride.

Good work Ice but you should probly have mounted the snail up behind the carbs Mr Turbo style to avoid the extra drama involved with oil return, unless you're planning to run an intercooler of course.
Can you make me up an extra set of flange plates while you're at it please mate?
BTW there is another 660 cc turbo on Ebay ATM $220.

It's taken me all day but I finally got 'em up. My dinky camera is pretty bad. Any questions, just ask.
At the bottom of the turbo is the resevoir. It's just a peice of two inch staino exhaust pipe with caps welded on either end. It has a filler plug and a breather so that the whole remote system doesn't pressurize. Note the oil feed to the pump is kept as low as possible.

Here's a closer view. In the foreground is the pump. I used a regulated pump so that when the turbo spins up the pump pumps faster.

This turbo is water cooled and the radiator is for water cooling. It is another separate system just like the oil system. At the top of the turbo you can see the oil line going in from the oil pump.
I hope this helps you make a decision, ice. have fun.

So what your saying is that, the small eletric pump sucks oil from the S/S canister, pumps it through the turbo and back into the canister. It does not share oil with the engine.

Am I correct, or still a dumbass?

That's right. It is a better system in that it can keep the turbo supplied with enough oil when at high revs. Also you can place a seperate cooler in line and a seperate filter. Keeps the turbo cooler and cleaner.

i got lost as soon as you blokes said Turbo. but 1 question i do have
Willow...
1: How does 2pac go as engine paint???
2: The boost pipe between your Plennum and Turbo, was that chromed before painting???
3: Ok i said 1 question so i'll save 3 for another time.
cheers

Davo, the paint is candied purple overlay over polished alloy and red flamey looking things. And 2 pac paint goes fine. But it does hinder the cooling on air cooled motors a little.

Iceman, the airbox doesn't exit anymore. I run injection not carby. The set-up for the turbo/plenum is different to a carby set-up. With a carby you can have either blow through or suck through. Suck through is easier because you don't have to worry about carby pressurization. But it is still a bit of a pain in the but to set up. Injection is much simpler.

This is a budget build though, I've got the time to fuck around with it, but not the cash to inject it. I'm stick'n with carbys but am unsure weather I'll go for draw or blow through.

Davo, candy is a pain in the ass to paint because it's very time consuming. Basically what a candy is is a pissy thin colour coat layed over a white or preferably silver base, so that the base shows through to a degree. The base doesn't necessarily have to be polished or clean. What really matters is the application of the top colour coat.

Mechanics have a solution that they dip their parts for cleaning and it cleans like nothing else. This is a good first step in preparing your motor. After this, the best thing you can do when painting a motor is to make sure you prime it in a top quality 2 pac etch. This type of primer etches itself into the metal and helps set up a key for the top coat to grab onto. If you have any defects that need filling, use a top quality 2 pac primer/filler. But the etch primer is the main thing.

With suck through, the turbo has to be closer to the intake manifold. Suck through is a lot easier to set up and to tune after the installation because, like i said, you don't have to worry about pressure adjustmenst and troubleshooting. In general a carby set-up is a pain in the ass to tune. Injection is much, much easier to tune, and believe me, you WILL be doing some tuning after you've done the instal. Tuning is the worse part - Fucking bastard mongrel shit ... that's how bad it is!

I'd be a bit wary about beadblasting your engine Davo, it does give great results but the hard part is getting rid of all of the dust and grit, it finds its way into any openings so it may end up in oil galleries etc with nasty results.
As for candy colours they really aren't that bad to apply, just a base colour with a transparent intermediate colour with a clear coat over the top.
