Hey guys I am a relatively new forum member, I have just sold my beloved Busa and bought myself an 87 GSXR1100. I plan on turning this into a streetfigher (obviously or I wouldn't be on this forum) was wondering if I could ask you guys some questions. I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge whatsoever so you will have to talk slowly to me, I have started stripping the bike down but am stuck at the carby (not sure how to disconnect the cable).

Anyway I would like to know what kind of stuff I can do a straight swap out for such as what size wheels/tyres can I put on it or am I better off just buying a third party swingarm so I can get a fat rear on it? What the hell are USD forks? I have seen them mentioned a few times but have no idea what they are and if I need a set to put a bigger front wheel on.

That is all I have for now but stay tuned because I have no doubt I will think up lots more.

USD stands for Up Side Down, it just means the fat part of the fork leg is at the top. As oppossed to RSU forks which are Right Side Up.

The throttle cable should have two nuts holding it in place to a bracket, with the bare steel cable itself then should have a lead lug on the end which slots into the throttle linkage at the carbs. Undo the nuts on the end of the cable, you should now be able to rotate the lug end of the cable around to the slot in the throttle linkage, this should do the trick.

Good luck!

Maate, if you can't remove the carbies yet, then you've got a long haul ahead of you (as we all did once).

The GSXR11 is the archetypal streetfighter base machine. Awesome motor, lightweight etc etc etc. Have you had a look in the owners gallery? a number of members are riding GSXR's. Have a look at which particular styling takes you're fancy and go from there. You'll get planty of good advice here (especially on the GSXR's from the likes of Mundy, Deano, Oz etc).

DO YOU HAVE THE MANUAL FOR YOU'RE BIKE. If not, that is you're best investment by far. The Factory ones are good for specs, and the Clymer/Haines are good for the lesser experienced non-mechanics amongst us (including myself).

BUT [:0] most important of all, build something that YOU 'lurve to ride'. I'm ecstatic with my old GPz900 now that I've fitted my drag bar extensions [:o)]:D[^](made up for me by Ben from Extreme Creations)...........and replaced a seriously shagged cam[:I].

Yea Jack. I have an idea for you mate. Go and get a photo of your bike for us and stick it up in this topic, then we'll give you some pictures of how we would do your bike if we owned it (based on bikes we know or have come across) then you can choose what you're aiming for and we can just tell you what you need to do. Job done. This is a bloody good idea actually. Why didn't I think of this before? The in-house custom bike build!

Ok. Your head is in the right place. That's what I wanted to see! First thing is you've picked photos of the '89 onward Gixer frame, but essentially there's not that much difference. The main difference is that tank. Now to find some slabbie conversions that I like.........

Depending on how radical you want to get and how much work you want to do, just straight of the blocks, check this unfinished project that Kev down in Melbourne was doing. The single sider really brought it to life but not as much as the SV1000 tank! What a great way to get the thing looking shit hot (the '87 tank wasn't a thing of beauty). As for fitting the thing I never got the low down from Kev, but I don't think it would be too hard to get someone to weld on the modified lugs. Check the shape difference!:

Tony, have you got a picture of Dodge's Slabbie?

......meanwhile, how about an aftermarket swinger like JMC (you haven't mentioned a budget yet so I'm pulling all the punches) and of course the compulsory USD forks.

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/8689/dodger5ec.jpg

These are early pics of it.
Later ones looked a lot nicer and he had a lot of
work done to the frame down by the swingarm pivot
to move the chain out even further.

Met the Guy who bought it off him one day,
(Barmouth Sea-front) he had done a few more jobs to it
(Wide flat exhaust can as an undertray) and it was
as drool worthy as ever.

Made my old "Rat-Fighter" look like real Junk :(
Went well though [8D][^]

Hello Jack, welcome to the forum. If your not techy minded then i think you should do lots and lots of reading/research and take your time to think about what you want and how you are going to do it. There should be lots of info for the gsx. You could check out the old school suzuki site. http://oldskoolsuzuki.info/

The first one that you put up I think I have in a book on street fighters but that last one, that is absolutely awesome that is the kinda stuff I am talkin about. What is the best way to get the frame done send it to electromold or whatever they are called down in vic or is there a cheaper way of getting it done in Sydney?

GixxerPilot yes I am willing to sell the plastic as it will never be going back on the bike, have no idea how much it is worth however so you tell me what you think, unless you have something laying around that I could use on my fighter then we may be able to strike up a deal.

As for the light on the orange bike, a bit too large for my liking, can they be cut down at all? I am a big fan of the one on the red bike that I posted and also just the bare bones twin lights. I am assuming you are talking about the one with the bug eyes not the one I posted. No offence to the person who owns that one, just not the look I am after.

I do however like the SV1000 tank that is a top idea.

Yeah I have been eyeing off a few parts on that site, in no hurry to buy everything right now though I want to make sure I do this properly and buy stuff second hand if possible. Speaking of second hand there is a set of GSXR1000 K2 Front forks on ebay, is that the kind of thing I should be after? If so I will put a bid on them, what would be a good price for those does anybody know?

Jack, Ben WAS on about the red bike headlight unit that you posted. The unit is from a german company but Stu (qickdraw - www.AuStreetfighter.com.au) obviously has one and he's in Sydney. The orange one is Tony's bike, and if I'm not mistaken, that is a cut down moped fairing which was all the rage a few years ago in England.

Then in that case yes I am interested, depending on the price of course because I am also interested in the basic double headlight which is on the AUStreetfighters site and another one I have seen but I think it was a custom job, was just a basic rectangle headlight but it had a billet box around it, very simple but nice.

Hey guys just checking with your wisdom here. I am going to A1 motorcycles tomorrow to buy a set of R1 forks with calipers and guard for $800 I am under the assumption this is a pretty good deal but if you think differently can someone tell me before I spend my hard earned.

Also if anyone is after anything else, they are literally having a fire sale the place caught fire and he told me that he has got a heap of bikes he is about to sell dirt cheap I had a look and he has got some pretty good bikes there like TLRs Ninjas and Ducatis. They have heat dmage but I am sure that wouldn't bother a lot of you guys. The Phone number is (02) 9556 1162.

Do I need an R1 front wheel if I am getting R1 forks? If I do I will ask him about those too.

One last one, are there any swingarms from later model bikes that would be compatible with my 1100 or do I have to get an aftermarket one if I am going to put something like a 190 on it?

I hear the R1 usd front end is one of the best to get.

If you can i would get the forks, wheel, discs, calipers, triple clamps, master cycliner and guard. otherwise you will be adapting stuff to fit but its up to you to dicide how work you want to put in.

i would try to put the complete R1 front end on including top and bottom triples, just modify the steering stop to suit the slabbie frame.

just depends on you bubget i guess

I don't really need the top triple as I am going to end up getting one of the top yolk conversions so I have the full streetfighter look without risers, is this a good idea or just a waste of money?

But I will probably hit the guy up for the front wheel as well if you guys think this is the best idea. Then I guess I will have to get an R1 rear so they match eh.

I'd go the complete front end if I was you to save on messing around. As for the back wheel: as the front end on the R1 is a 3 spoke affair, once painted the same colour, the back wheel could be any 3 spoke job. You never know, you might even go the VFR800/750 single sider?

Well I did it, hope you pricks are happy I just gave away all my money :)
I got the forks, the calipers, ressy, wheel and discs, axle and both lower and upper clamps. Paid $1400 seemed fairly reasonable for all of that.

Does anyone know if there are any swingarms that will slide right in to replace the one on the slabby? Such as a gixxer 1 thou or any single siders as I would rather pay a couple of hundred at a wreckers than 1500 for a JMC or whatever they go for, I am assuming they are around that much.

Well the only thing I can take pictures of at the moment is the stuff I just bought untill I work out how the fuck to get these carbies out, they are really starting to piss me off (not that I have spent that much time on it lately).

I have decided not to get the frame polished now, too expensive and the 87 frame doesn't look that awesome anyway so I am going to get it painted, not sure what colour yet was thinking either blue or red.

A couple of things don't anodise the frame as the welds will come out a diffent colour (not much tho if your lucky).

With your carbs is it the the cables giving you grief, if it is take them off from the throtle first that way you can pull the carbs out and get the cables out with much less fuss on a bench.

That front end sounds very nice, now you'll have to find a new set of speedo and tacho (if you want em to match), as the r1 has no speedo drive on the spindle (I know this should be common knowledge but he said he is a mechanical noob), anyway you could get a pushy speedo and put the sensor on the front (or back) wheel or the expensive method of replacing the sprocket cover with a Bandit 1200 k1 or newer cover($132 new), get a sensor for it (new $100+) and rotor sender ($10 new) and a set of clocks from a GSXR 600/750/1000 or bandit 1200 K1 or newer (Ebay $250 - $400), the only down side is you will have to either drill the shaft that the sprocket is on and tap it (M8 I think) or get a "castle nut" made with 4 fingers or maybe (I haven't checked yet) weld a sender to a sprocket nut and a speedo healer.

Wow time for a breath.
Anyway have fun
Andrew

Couldn't you just rig up a magnetic 'bike' speedo on it? I'm sure an Enduro computer would be just fine

anyway you could get a pushy speedo and put the sensor on the front (or back) wheel

As I said that is one option but it is limited to a speedo and some people like their tachos too.

Hi Jack,

I fucking crack myself up:D

Go here http://oldskoolsuzuki.info/patrick/home.htm and check out some of the projects the Brits/Euros have done on their GSXRs. One of them was the saga of fitting an R1 swinger...not a job for a beginner.

Next time your sitting looking at your bike...how about you measure the width of your swingarm at the pivot. (distance between the two sides of the frame)and let us know pls.

As for your carbies

1. Get yourself a manual. If you don't want to pay for it someone should be able to point you to where you can download one
2. Loosen the clamps around the front and back of each carby (rubber manifolds and rubbers into airbox)
3. The throttle cable should go through a plate with the end of the cable (a little drum) just pressed into the side of a half moon bit of pressed steel. You need to loosen off the cable to get this drum out. There should be a nut around the cable housing where it passes through the plate? Loosen this nut off back towards the cable boss...then wind the cable down into the plate until you have enough play to pull the ye drum out of the half moon thingy.

Here's a diagram:D

g'day jack welcome to the site, that is one nice example of a 88 ltd as davo said

if you are going to get rid of ( ie sell ) the plastic work i'm intrested in buying them.

I will make you a deal, if you are in NSW and you know a bit about bikes and you want to come around and help me finish stripping mine down then you can have all the plastics for nicks. How does that sound?

Yes well that just sucks arse big time. On a good note I managed to get those damn carbies out I took the disconnect from the bars suggestion, and man don't they take some yanking to get from between the air box and the engine.
