View Full Version : My Kat's An Oilcoholic

On sunday morning I noticed the oil in the Kat was a bit low so I figured some must have run out while it was upside down. I put a bit over half a litre in to get to get the level up...

I checked it again yesterday and it's down again, this time about 400ml bought it back up.

So it's used about a litre over 1125 ks.

The catch can isn't full, and unfortunately no one was behind me long enough ([:I]) to tell me if I was blowing oil out the exhaust..

What do I start checking?.

howya goin Large?
If she's still got good compression,(ie not worn bore/ rings),
valve guides are the most likely culprit.
Thicker oil mate?

do a compression test then do a wet compression test mate and if there is a difference its likely to be rings if there is no difference its most likely valve guides.check the prices of valves mate and you will be hoping its just rings.Either way its a good excuse to up the hp.How many k`s has it got on it.

Thanks for the (sensible) replies.

I was on the turps again last night and I nearly ordered some 1216 pistons from http://www.pistons-online.com/
But I think I'll do the compression tests etc first.

Hey why would you buy from pistons.com, have you tried serco directly as I went to buy 71mm pistons from a bike shop(wiseco) and they wanted $800 where as serco wanted $627 for the same thing, plus they have some very nice bits and pieces - ape cam chain tensioners, sloted sprockets etc.

I would skim the head to up the cr slightly, dial in your cams to flaten out the power delivery, put in 1mm oversize piston kit and a rejet to suit nothing too radical just nice and reliable.

Big numbers and high HP are great fun but if you spend more time in the workshop/garage and not riding whats the point.

Anyway just a thought

Have Fun
Andrew

Be carefull ordering 1216s, I can't remeber what the figure was but but when you hit a certain size you need to install a different liner and open up the cases to accept it, which is a pain in the arse.
Actually belay that 'cause I just remembered mine is 1275, i think that is the limit.
As for the oil if it's burning that much you'd know. Is there oil on the bottom of the Alternator cover? Mine had a leak in the O ring for the starter motor that leaked out of the hole in the bottom of starter motor recess was drawn forward by vacuum created behind alt cover at speed and left no trace except for a couple of drops on the bottom of the alt cover. It took forever to find that bastard of a leak.
