View Full Version : Shocks bottoming out?

My USD forks on my Katana seem to bottom out too easily.

I've wound up the preload and the damping adjustment but they only seem to have a very little bit of travel before bottoming over bumps and potholes.

What do I do? New Springs? Thicker oil? Lose a few kilos?

what are the forks off?

if you cant set up the sag than it'll probably need harder springs

New springs are the only thing that will help with the bottoming out Large. Give IKON (Albury) a call and chat to the guy there. He knows what he's talking about apparently, and he has good prices/delivery times. ;)

Heavier oil will slow down the rate of compression\rebound, but won't stop you bottoming out, and could give you a 'wooden' feeling front end[V]. Air assist will reduce the bottoming out, until you hit a big enough bump to blow the air past the seals.:(

Losing a few kilo's is
A) bloody hopeful that that just a few will make a difference with you mate[:0]
B) will still bottom out when pillioning, carrying luggage or just going damned hard. [xx(]

And if anyone finds any part of this post in the slightest bit offensive......................COOL [^]

Actually the Kat weighs the same as a Busa, Well maybe that doesn't mean much does it :D

But I did work with a guy recently who was 190 Kilo's. Came with a built in pillion :)

Hey Large,

It'll probably cost a little more but go to a suspension specialist. It will be money worth it. My old ZZR was transformed when Promecha in Melb spec'd springs gold valves etc etc to achieve exactly what I wanted.

I didn't really want to be pulling it all apart this close to Macksville...you know what will happen with parts etc...

I'll give Ikon a call tomorrow and see how quickly I can get parts before I start dismantling

cheers

the tricky bit would be working out what new spring-rate u need

i guess if you tell them what it is, and that it is currently bottoming just with sag they might be able to give you something close?
worth a shot

you have fatigued springs or light or lack of oil Lardge, add a bit(20m/l) more oil to get you to the fools run.when you get home measure the free length by removing the springs and compare it to the specs in your manual.I'd advise progressive suspension over Racetech anyday for them forks, its not a race bike so why put race springs in it.
