View Full Version : Katana Frame Types ?

Whats the difference (if any) in the frames between the 750 and 1100 Kats ?

The reason Im asking is... could you just drop an 1100 motor in a 750 frame no worries ? I actually thought the physical size of the 750 and 1100 motors was identical is this right ?

not sure about the kat motors but the gixxer motors are the same except in there hight ( barrels are longer on the 11's )

I think you need new mounts at the front of the engine, otherwise identical.

The 1100 barrels and heads will also fit the 750 bottom end I believe. I was wondering of that $2500 Kat 750 would be worth doing it to. A real street sleeper (plus you don't have to re-engineer for the larger capacity). 1075cc barrels with 1135cc head, that way you get the 3 face valves of the EF's, and the EF cams were the stage1 cams for the 1075's, plus the higher volume 750 oil pump. Take the oil cooler and oil filter cover off an EF for a truly bullet proof engine.

Thats basically what I was thinking Chalk, except like I said in the other thread Id be leaning towards a Bandit Motor :D

the only difference is 2 of the engine mounts, mine is a 750 with an 1100 in it.

You'll want to brace the frame at the front downtubes and the back above the swingarm mount area. Old Skool have an article on bracing the Kat frame.

One that I did to a GSX11 was a steering headstock extension, the efects were amazing, all wobbles, wiggles and wallows disappeared completely, it felt like that Duc 900ss riding on rails type thing.
If you measure the front fork slider travel you will see that there is ~5 inches of unused front fork stanchion. I had a sterring head extension of 4 inches made up and welded to the bottom of the existing steering head. A much larger than standard bearing was at the bottom. The extension was then braced to the downtubes using 1/4 inch plate (overkill I know). I also had a new longer steering stem machined up.

The job was surprisingly easy to do, and seemed to 'fix' the cause of the handling problems, ie too much flex in front forks and steering head. After upgrading the front brakes you'll be able to do real stoppies on a Kat11. But this assumes that you would be retaining the original front end.

Excellent thanks guys!!

I have discovered that the Bike shop I have the Bandit in at the moment has a Katana wreck "stashed" out the back. I havnt put the hard word on the guys yet but Im gonna today...

Hey Razor what shop works on your bike in Mildura ?? Always interested to know where other people take their bikes, who they trust and all.
