i had a sales rep call in yesterday and we started talking bikes and he was telling me how he is a bike mechanic by trade and he owns 4 bikes at the moment.
one of the bikes was a 89GSXR750 and he said that moding a standard engine is not worth it when you can go out a buy a "works" engine from somone like Mick Hone motorcycles. he said that he brought a standard bike pulled out the standard motor and inserted "works" motor and then dynoed bike and came up with 141hp at the rear wheel!
all this from a 750cc he was also saying that Suzuki released these works motors in a limited run of production bikes that were called a GSXRR (extra R denotes extra power) there was only apparently a few hundred of these bad boys brought to Australia.

Have any of you heard of such a motor/bike existing?

Yea mate. I remember those bad boys. They were rare and cost a bucket load more than the stocko but you'd used to see a few going around. Ozkat was chasing the tail piece from one if I remember rightly.

Here's an '89 model pic:

Crankcase, crankshaft connecting rods and clutch were among the critical areas receiving more attention necessary for the race duty. The 'Double R' also received new 40mm Slingshot carburetor and 4-into-1 exhaust pipe as well as close ratio gearbox, rear swing arm with sub frame, new aerodynamic fiber with large air intake duct, solo seating with race number box and 19 litere aluminium fuel tank as standard equipment. Pretty hot looking rig.

have seen the single seat bikes once before but didn't make the conection.

sounds like a bit of a weapon if the power figures the guy quoted are correct

Hey All,

I recall Suzuki brought in about 20 of the RRs in the late 80s, there was an earlier RR (slab side) but I only think 2 or 3 made it in. Yamaha did a similar effort with the FZR-owo and then later YZF-750. Team green brought in 10 of ZXRRs in 93 (one of which was for recent sale $7K in Essendon).

These true race rep bikes always seem to change hands pretty quickly as I guess the av. Joe discovers that really high first gear & flat slide carbies just ain't as friendly as their VFRs for "sensible commuting".

I think the other prob with the high spec engines is the cost of replacement parts - usually you can get more grunt from squeezing an 1100/1340 etc into the 750 space. Years ago I rode with an ex-factory rider who had a superbike kitted RC-30 Honda. It was a beast until he broke the crank and then the bike sat in the shed for years whilst he tried to track down another suitable factory spec crank.

I almost bought one of these from a guy in Newcastle a couple of years ago. $5000! Needless to say the guy didn't realise what he had. Apparently it was his brothers bike & he'd dissappeared in the States, so his family started selling all his stuff! I wrote down the chassis no. & had it verified by Suzuki, but when I went back to the guy someone else had been down & bought it on the spot for $5500! Bugger.
So I consoled myself with an 1100m...... oh, well.....
As an aside, I had a (very) brief love affair with an 0W01, too.....
