I think Robmac did the plastic side covers on his gsx14 in it mate you could try asking him.

I used it as striping on my fighter. It's durable, but it doesn't like being stretched or bent to go around curves.

And if the surface isn't perfectly smooth, you will see EVERY defect. That part was disappointing (I thought it would have been better at hiding minor imperfections that it was)

You'll need to get the right type of vinyl, the stuff they use for car wraps. It can be heated and strecthed around curves without putting stretch marks in it. There is an art to it but if you've never applied large areas of vinyl before, prepare to do a lot of swearing. You'll need a proper squeegy as well. Just found this online as well, may help: http://www.signindustry.com/vinyl/articles/2003-02-14-JL-VinylWrapPt3.php3#story

i bought some wrap in carbon print , its not to hard to use , i have only done a few smaller pieces a large area may take some doing but its not hard , i watch a million and a half you tube vids before attempting to do it myself

I used it a few weeks ago to cover the shock reservoir and fuel injection covers on my 14. The pieces I covered were small and not complicated shapes but I figure if you have a little patience and a hairdryer you should be good to cover anything.

That Ducati looks pretty good.

There's a lot of vinyl out there and 3M Di-Noc is supposed to be the best. All you need is a heat gun, sharp stanley knife and a bit of plastic about the same size as a credit card to stretch and smooth out the vinyl. The best prices are the US of course. The same stuff in Oz is 2 or 3 times the price. I got my carbon fibre vinyl and a few tools from these guys in Florida. http://www.carbonfibervinyl.com/carbon_fiber_vinyl.html. The stuff arrived in a big cardboard tube and only took about a week. The heat gun was about $40 dollars at Bunnings. Just make sure the gun is a variable heat type. As Hyofighter said, watch a shit load of videos :D.

My brother had a spare set of white plastics for the VMax and decided to get them 3M C/F wrapped. All up 2 guards and a tank were $180 and the guy did a great job. It comes in 9 different colours and finishes now.

bought a roll of 3m di-noc in white carbon finish

tried wrapping my phone case, worked ok. needs better contact adhesive to get it around the tight corners and stay there.
something like a bike tank would be a piece-o-cake i think

here is the auction i got it from
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270724425216?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

took 2weeks to get here but otherwise ok

it looks pretty realistic i guess (for white carbon lol)

I must be living under a rock as I didn't even know this stuff existed.
Looks great and I see there are a few places doing it in Oz. Could be wrong but probably costs megadollars to get your parts dipped here.
Start up costs for a small tank operation don't appear too high though especially if the stuff comes out of the US or China. Had a look at the Liquid Concepts forum and there appears to be a lot of small operators in the US. Is there a market for it?

I tried to wrap the busa tank.........I failed remarkably.....I painted it...., the guys on Youtube make vinyl wrapping look a hell of a lot easier than it is. That paint dipping is the go, they use it to put the camo pattern on the archery bows and it gets in all the nooks and cranies really well.

There is a mob selling blank paper backed PVA sheet for hydrodipping , you Just print with an inkjet printer (with non waterbased ink, usally oilbased) let it dry. Peel paper off PVA and put sheet into water bath, spray ink activator and dip.

Manufacture in china when I looked at it a while back they wouldnt sell to Aus for some stupid reason. I think there was a utube vid of someone from brazil doing the same with a email adress for sales but I never bothered to chase it down. You can print pritty much anything you can print with a standard inkjet then.

i wonder how the vynil wrap goes with petrol fumes etc too

also wonder what the cost is vs wrapping in actual carbon, which i suspect would be easier on a complex shape than the vynil

Direct from 3M

" While the material has a 12 year lifespan indoors, it has a 4 year vertical lifespan outdoors (3 years in desert sun). This is all dependent on UV light exposure, so if the material is installed on a car that is parked in a garage during the day or a show car that is mostly indoors, you can expect the material to last longer. It’s water resistant, so rain and snow won’t be a problem. Horizontal outdoor decoration is not recommended by 3M as exposure to maximum sunlight and environmental conditions can cause color change, loss of gloss, chalking and premature failure."

It can be clear coated (or epoxy coated) , to improve UV resistance but it changes the visual effect. Personaly by the time you fuck about doing all that it would be as easy and similar price to just CF it in the first place.

Vinyl will prob be ok for small fuel splashes , but some petrol additives would be an exelent glue solvent.

Sid's Response

The shape/contour of a busa tank is not that complex. I have wrapped harder shapes previously, so the tank should be easy enough.

Doing a day with Avery next week in vehicle wrapping and 3m next month.Installation of graphics and wraps is not a recognised trade or certificate but experience counts. Vehicle wrapping is becoming the new custom "thing" and the finishes available now are fucken ace. I'm going to have a crack at learning the process for top notch finishes and looking to either get employment and or subcontract work in installation.
Will be looking for guinea pigs shortly.

Homework today was wrapping a fuel tank in gloss white.....After 2 shots at it and much muttering of "Oh Bother" I understand there is much to learn. Car panels look like a fucken doddle compared to bike parts.

It's easy when you have a brother-in-law who does it for a living. He does a lot of the Qld based V8 supercars. We've only just recently talked about doing my whole bike with it as he hasn't done one before and wants to give it a go.

Gaining momentum.
Have completed installation courses with Avery and have 4 old dungers already lined up for some work.....just need the bloody shed finished. If its not raining up here or the daytime temp gets warm enough to melt ice then I'm definitely at work or a bloody 3 year olds birthday party.
Have gotten interest from local rodders to do;
66 Thunderbird in pearl white
66 Mk1 Cortina 2 tone pearl white roof blue body
58 Customline that already has a $25k paintjob but owner not happy with the colour
200sx that had its resale destroyed when someone pointed a spray gun at it loaded with PINK paint.

Doing the roof of the Cortina later this week. I'll put up some pictures. Will soon be looking for anyone interested as a guinea pig to do their bike. And believe it or not there are more colours available than just CF look alike film.

I spoke to a mob here in Sydney about carbon vinyl wrap for the bike last week
I was told due to the angles and lack of surface area that it will last about six months...
Paint it is!

Not true. The Market is flooded with the stuff, cheap and counterfeit. DO NOT buy 3m from ebay sellers. 80% chance its counterfeit with 3m logos and all.
If prepared properly and a quality film like 3m 1080 or Avery Supreme Wrap is used then you wont have problems with adhesion or longevity.
Talk to this lot up your way. http://www.carbondemon.com.au/

Try speaking with 3M or Avery directly ask for their state rep. Find out directly from supplier what they can and cant do or suit. All else fails try this number 0400107615. fellas name is Nelson he is a rep for MEP Films (window tinting) he has a few contacts in the industry and is very helpful.

Hi all,
Been a while since any update on this thread, Anyone got any stories of shrinkage or peeling on their bike bits? Curious to know as I saw wrapping as a good alternative to painting a whole bunch of parts on my project. Cheers.

Well the parts I have done on my bike seem to have lasted so far I was a bit skeptical in the begining of longivity but 2 years on and a fair bit of riding its all good sure its not as good as paint but is pretty cool dano come to mt helena tav tommo for lunch I put a thread up for it and have a look at the pieces on my bike

Hey Hyo sorry missed the post but cheers for the invite anyhow. I have the bike in a million bits at the mo but I'll be putting it back together soon once I have set up the new rearsets, which of course will require a good ride and possibly catch up next time to take a look. Cheers.
