Hi all I am looking at converting my 1994 gsxr 750 into a streetfighter.
I was after info on where to start and if anyone has if they could pass on some info to make my life easier.
I will be looking at using it to go rides with the boys so nothing to over board.
I would like even to start on put different handle bars on it as I would be keen to have ones that sit on top of the forks.
Any help would be great and looking forward to hear from you.

+Welcome to the house buddy, I recommend you start by having a search around the forum, there are a stack of threads dedicated to photos of peoples fighters, look at other peoples build threads as well. The problem with your question is fighters are an individual thing so what we think looks good, may in fact not be what you want.
The good news is you have a fairly common bike, so start by pulling off your fairings, find a tail you like and get your triple tees drilled to take your flat bar risers.

bluedrags
12-10-2011, 03:27 PM
How do you drill the triple tree to suit flat bars.
I know with a drill but I meant is there away to measure where you drill or do you just sit them on there and get it looking good then dril where they go ?.

Redmohawk
12-10-2011, 05:44 PM
Start by looking under the top of your tripples to see when a bolt will fit without interfering with webbing underneath etc look at the risers you fancy (single bolt, twin, upright, offset etc etc) plus make sure you can get the risers to suit the bars you want. Once you work out the location measure heaps center punch locations go for it.

Is there anywhere in Australia that you can buy kits from and that can also help with other parts of the build and also a good price list.
Would anyone know a place that I can find out about what other people have done to a bike same as mine.

Welcome aboard Reece, If your not keen on drilling your top triple don't go past this mob,

http://www.topyokes.com/comfort_kit_+_handlebars/316

and don't buy in Aus because you'll get raped with price..

That kit is $392 (posted) for a CNC Top clamp with risers, Bars and Braided Brake lines..

Or you can upgrade to fat bars or black kit or just get top yoke by itself and source your own bars..

and have a look in here for some inspiration hey,

if you want to go cheap on gauges get a $20 pushie speedo

otherwise like rod said, go for quality, its something you look at every few seconds
acewell, koso, motogadget etc

with the lights try to stay away from anything without h4, h7 types globes.
things with downlights and parking light style bulbs are generally rubbish for light output

Tony Nitrous

if you want to go cheap on top yolk's get one from anything at the
wreckers with the same size folk tubes and cut the centre out
between the two clamps including the bit that takes the stem.
left and right ends bolt to the fork tubes above your current one.
Seen it done a couple of times, looks dodgy as f*ck! ... [:o)]

Done the stripping of bike and getting ready to start the hard work.
My bike isn't registered at the moment and I was wondering if I should get it done before I change things around as I don't know what it is like in nsw to register a bike which has been changed.
If anyone knows would be great if you could let me know and can I was wondering if I need special bars or can I use the ones from local bike shop?.
Sorry about all the questions but would like to get it right the first time.

Stripped just need a bigger spanner to remove swing arm.
Then decide what colour to paint it.

Do I need to locktite any certain bolts and does anyone have torque specs for bike.

Nice progress mate, are you going to powdercoat the frame?

rod185651
01-12-2011, 09:18 PM
Yes, you need to use loctite, torque settings will be in the workshop manual.

bluedrags
02-12-2011, 04:13 AM
Yer thinking of doing the frame and swing arm and a few other smaller pieces satin black as I can get it done for a good price.
Do I use a mild locitite or a strong one?.

RevHead
02-12-2011, 06:56 AM
just use a non hardening loctite,,,,you dont want it to fall apart while riding ,,,but you also might need to get it apart to change things,,

bluedrags
03-12-2011, 03:07 PM
I have stripped bike and now was wondering what is the best way to clean engine for paint.
How do you get the roller bearings out from the bottom of swing arm where the rear spring was.

pav69
03-12-2011, 06:03 PM
you can always paint the frame and swingarm that way you dont have to remove bearings

bluedrags
03-12-2011, 06:35 PM
I thought of that but I would like to repack bearings and powder coating can take more of a knock.
If I was to paint do I have to do much to prep frame and swingarm.

Welcome Reece, Ive got a 95 7/11 now, but did start out as a fighter 750. I did rego the bike in stock trim before the complete rebuild started. Its much easier for the NSW blue slip that way. Then go nuts and pull the beast down. Just hang on to some vital parts though just in case.
As for the top clamp, drill it but measure twice on everything, you dont want the bars crossed up while riding straight if you get what I mean!

bluedrags
11-12-2011, 07:15 AM
I can't decide what colour to do bike in so was wondering what people think as you might think of a colour I haven't.
I am looking at powder coating frame and swing arm and bit's and piece's satin black and maybe rims.
I know it's my own build but at a stand still as I don't want to have to do it twice.

Labia

pav69
11-12-2011, 12:28 PM
to powdercoat frame etc you will blast them to paint you treat them like anything you paint and also if you scratch or chip p/coat its a pain to pull everything off and start again with paint you can touch up and happy days .as far as a colour for your bike its a very personal choice and choice is unlimited these days its one of the biggest pain in the ass decisions you will make but it makes a bike and if you get sick of it its easy to have a change and not that pricey.

11-12-2011, 12:44 PM

You will pretty much fuck the needle bearings getting them out. Get a quote on new ones. You may fall over at the price. I haven't loctited any chassis bolts on mine. Most of the important stuff has lock nuts. The rest spring washers. Get all the fasteners recoated. Looks real unfinished with old looking fasteners. Powder cost on frame is easy. Satin black is the go.

bluedrags
12-12-2011, 03:05 PM
What sort of price I am looking at for the needle bearing Deano ?.
Might get it 2 pack painted as I have a mate that might be able to get it done for cheap and easier to touch up.

Deano

You talking swing arm or steering stem rod?

El_Hefty
13-12-2011, 01:09 AM
needle rollers for my gsxr rear swinger were about $30 each by mammory last year genuine ... odd size so were not available aftermarket.

As for Loctite i'll correct some missinformation. I should post a thread on it as reference i used to sell the shit for a number of years and did hundreds of talks, demos and designs with engineers from working with the defence force to local councils cochlear ear implants car manufacturers mines etc etc etc you name it so i know a little bit about the product.

A Thread locker for general use on a bike I use 243 (blue), oil tolerant ie will work on a rag wiped bolt unlike other types like 222 (wicking) or 262,271,277 which are bolt lockers and generally way too hard and create large breakaway torques and if used in the wrong application can cause issues. There is NO non hardening thread locker, there are non hardening gasket sealers though like 515 518 and non hardening thread sealants , but by design and function a thread 'locker' must cure hard to function.

A spring washer is a 'retainer' By pure design a spring washer will do nothing from stopping a bolt backing off or losing tension but it will/should , 'once in its open position' ie sprung hold a nut from falling off as that is all they were designed to do. Spring washers are antequated and very very low tech, a better version of a simple retainer is tie wire. Nyloc nuts are another but ONE use only, but i would be amazed by how many people reuse nyloc nuts on things like rear axles. They also fuck with torque settings especially if reused. Loctite will not on tensioning fuck your torque settings . But once cured increase the 'breakaway torque' quite substantially.

If you have a torque wrench set up a demo with two bolts and two nuts get the nuts held in a vice and screw in the bolts one with a spring washer and one with loctite leave them for a few hours and then undo... i have a WB torque wrench that shows torque in both directions and the 'breakaway torque' with loctite will exceed the initial tightening torque (once cured of course) whereas the springwasher the torque is typically lower unless other factors come into play like galvanic corrosion etc etc which wont if loctite is used....

simply if you dont want shit to fall apart or come loose use loctite sure it 'might' not without it, but it 'wont' with it if used correctly

any further questions ill be by the water cooler at morning tea ;o)

LKC73
08-01-2012, 09:34 PM
Blue, it may require spacers and the pivot bolt may also be a different size. I am at the moment trying to fit up an 2007 GSXR 1000 swingarm to my bike. It required 3-4mm shim to push it to the right of the bike. Even then I have to get the cush drive milled back and space off the front sprocket to line the chain up correctly to run true.
It can be a bit of a fuck around, but it can be done.
