ok steve can ya repair rust in the tank ?? might be easier just to get one from a wrecker dude i have the colour sorted out
ok guys who knows a snadblaster and powder coater in sydney thats actually any good ??
damo1
27-04-2012, 04:00 PM
Ah pete im in sydney and have repaired a tank very similar to that before, if you dont wanna take if up the coast i can help you out with the tank if you want.
Brookvale sand blasters are good and Brookvale powder coaters are supposed to be pretty good as well, i havn't used the powder coaters before but the sand blasters yes.
I prefer to paint rather than powder coat.
kev@vcm
27-04-2012, 04:05 PM
ok damo1 is paint better than powder ?
pav69
27-04-2012, 05:16 PM
if you mean powder on the frame i have never done it have always painted so dont know the difference in wear factor ,paint is easier to repair as for rust in tank you can reseal the inside but a good one to start with i think would be better ,so when are you going to let me in on your choice of colour.
damo1
27-04-2012, 05:22 PM
Ive always been told that powder coating is porous, so you will always start to get spider viens of rust under it
eventually.
The other way to do it if you really want powder coated colors is to 2k clear over it once it's done and it will seal it, but that sort of defeats the point of powder coating because you are painting it anyway so you way as well just put down a color you want and clear it.
So to answer your question i feel that 2k painted finished is better than powder coating, in my eyes its also a much better finish- you can't build depth with powder coating full stop , you can with paint and clear.
Redmohawk
29-04-2012, 08:44 PM
Powder coating isnt porous , if done correctly it is far stronger and impervious than enamel paint. But if done poorly its can be thin in one area think in another and have bits compleatly missing. The biggest prob with powdercoating on frames is the strength of the shit, if your frame develops a crack somewhere the powdercoating can mask it till it is quite large (where paint will also generally crack making the crack easyer to find)
About 15 years back making racing sidecar frame with a mate , using renolds 355 (chromemolly, but easyer to weld can be prone to cracking though) he powdercoated it to bling it up , found out the hard way it can hide a crack lol.
After that he nitrogen charged his frame and run a pressure gauge if it went down he went over the frame real good. Besides paint is lighter !

Hi Kev
For what it's worth I got all my engine cases acid stripped then I "painted" them with enamel thinners and sprayed them with PJ1 Satin black engine paint.I think that the end result was pretty good myself.
