It's been a while since i've had a build thread. I had a speed triple, which was awesome, but not quite perfect to commute on, and also nothing i wanted to modify on it. my wonderful wife suggested i sell it and get a project.I bought a supermoto to commute on, and, when no one wanted to buy the triple, I traded it at a dealer for a 2000 model vfr 800 in seemingly good condition (all original body work with only a few scratches)and 150000ks. they got the triple, and i got the vfr and a big cheque. And about 3 months worth of headaches as i had to force the dealer to replace the reg rec, stator and throttle position sensor until the vfr was working right.
Anyway, this is whats now in the shed. Please ignore the dodgy as fuck headlight setup, ii took off the fairing, but didn't have time to sort the acewell, and needed the speedo to work so i can ride it to the welder's to get the subframe on.

so far I've got a headlight (mofo) an 05 gsxr 600 front end and acewell (watto), delkevic stainless headers (internet), pc3 usb (birthday), ninja 250 seat and subframe (large)and a ducati 848 cast marchesini front wheel (which means i can use the rotors exben made for my carro's), and a forged 1098s rear wheel (rockhard).
I've also got a scorpion can for a gladius fitted, which makes the vfr sound fucking cool.

I'm hoping to have something resembling a fighter for nfr, and i'm pretty excited to be getting stuck in again.

no actually. When i bought the seat and subframe, Large gave me the plastic infill panels that come stock with the baby ninja, which means i can cut them down and it will look factory. kinda. The 250 seat gives a lot of air between the wheel and the seat which looks good, and is about 150mm shorter than the stock vfr seat (also a massive plus), and sits about 25mm higher than the stock seat, so it'll give me a bit more leg room.

so, the back end is on.
I had Harley from RB racing cut the tabs off the original subframe and weld them on the ninja 250 seat. The bottom rail lines up nicely, and the top one is a bit higher than the original mount. The black side panels from the ninja cover the gap between the seat/frame and tank nicely.

Front end is on, too. Again, i had Harley fit it. When i was surfing the net to find out what front ends would fit, it all centred around the 929/954/sp1 triples and then whatever forks. With the 04 gsxr 600 front end, the bottom bearings are the same, and Harley used a yamaha srx 400 top bearing, but had to take 1mm off the inner race to make it fit, but it meant that he didn't have to press the steel vfr stem into the aluminium gsxr bottom yoke. He also made the spaces needed to fit the 848 wheel with the ex creations front discs.

With all the welding and machining done, it's on to wiring the acewell, and moving a shitload (about 500mm) of extra wiring under the tank and into the new seat.

And this is where the acewell should sit when I'm done.

I pulled unravelled the front half of the harness this afternoon, and with my brother's help, managed to figure out the best way to route the mess, and fingers crossed, i don't fuck it up too much.

I've got a vfr wiring diagram, so I should be ok. After re-routing the wires, i probably won't have to shorten it too much. Instead of one bundle heading up the left side of the bike and then two branches across the front of the bike for the relays and coils, I have pulled it back through the frame to the back of the tank, and will run it across and over to the right side, with relays etc being squeezed in under the seat, and then extending the wiring for the switch gear back to the back of the tank. The wiring that came with the acewell reaches the tank already.

It has a scorpion can for a gladius on it, which sounds great, even better than my old speed triple with a shorty M4. The sound of your vfr is the reason I wanted to do a vfr as my next fighter.

I haven't got any new pics for you all, but a quick update.
I got a flat on my motard, so was using the vfr to commute on. I parked in the city, crossed the road to speak to one of my tradies, while I was talking to him he pointed over my shoulder, and some fucker had reversed into the vfr; knocking it over. So after finding lots of minor but expensive damage, i have a cheque coming to me from his insurance company.
I've already put on some MX bars, and bought a 1098 rear spindle off ebay to help attach the 1098s rear wheel to the vfr. After Ben does some hard work, of course.

Back at ya for your bandit, OS.
I'm happy with the way it's coming together, and the amount of attitude you can get out of an old man's touring bike. After the rear wheel goes on, i'll be figuring out front mount rads. Because there is no room fora traditional front mount ( the wheel takes up all the space under compression) i'm thinking dirt bike side by side rads. Anyone know where I can find a list of dimensions for various dirtbike radiators?

So after i was reversed into, i used the money to buy as few bits and pieces. New mcas handlebars, I put on the driven grips that i bought a while ago, and I rerouted the throttle cable to suit. Unfortunately, even after doing that, the throttle cables still weren't quite long enough, at full lock they were binding, so i had longer ones made. I also got some venhill braided lines (front and rear), as the ones I got with watto's front end weren't quite right after the new higher bars.

When it got knocked over, the headlight stopped working, I couldn't get it going again, so i dropped it off at SMW for them to sort it out, they relocated the key for me into the tail unit. The spot where i had put it near the black infill betweenn the seat and tank was way too hot, even the key was getting warm to the touch.
The rear panels are new (for me) black ones. when it got knocked over, i noticed that one of the tabs had been broken off, hard to repair something that was now missing. SMW repaced them both for the princely sum of $65 with a matching black pair. Only a tri colour now.
I also replaced the ex creations rotors because the spring washers kept falling out of the right disc, it hapenned at NFR, causing a big shake under brakes, so i had ben put new spring washers in, and then they came out again, and the shake came back. Only on one disc though. i'd love to use them, but not if they don't hold together anymore. i went with Metal gear standard rotors, I think the wave rotors from the ex creations discs might have been catching on the pad per piston calipers i am using, shaking the washers loose.

I also changed the vfr rad fan blade to a vtr1000 one to help cooling. I don't think there's a cheap way to relocate teh radiators, so i'm thinking about using some dirt bike rad shouds (yamaha yz 250f, 2010 -2011) to help tie the side mount rads in, to make it look like they belong. i think they look good from the front, but from teh side they need some bodywork to make them work visually.

hooligan
06-02-2012, 08:28 PM
Oh, and I bought a 1098 spindle off ebay, and the rear wheel and spindle are at ex creations to get sorted out.Ben just happened to have a vfr 800 arm upstairs, so when he gets a chance, he'll figure out how to get the single nut ducati wheel onto the 4 stud honda arm. No rush on that though, I'm doing the california superbike school with my brother next wednesday (which is why i needed a new rear tyre), so the rear wheel can go on after that.

I stopped by SMW yesterday and had a look around upstairs at their pile of body panels. Upstairs I found a radiator cover from a yamaha xj6n. Sorry for the shitty phone pic.
It will be angled up a bit more to follow the lines on the tank better, it is held on with electrical tape in the pic. I think it looks good, and will hopefully help with getting better air flow through the side mount rads.
The number on the side is from the california superbike school i did last week. They recognised my genius.
Or maybe it was alphabetical.

so no problems with getting the bike on eastern creek chris?

how do the shrouds look from the front?

hooligan
23-02-2012, 12:24 PM
Si, I gave up on trying to do a front mount, so started to look at rad covers and dirt bike shrouds. SMW used to be a wreckers and workshop, but now are only a workshop, but have a large stockpile of bits and bobs upstairs that they use mostly to repair bikes that come in. Or they let me wander around looking for fighter bits.

Fimp, no probs with scrutineering at all, the bike went really well, and I learned a lot. I'll post something about it soon.
The shrouds look good from the front too, they cover a bit of the leading edge of the rads. The bike is a little wider (maybe 70 mm each side) but still narrower than my legs.
The rads as they are are angled up at the front, ruining the lines of the bike.
The angles of the covers are much better than the rectangle of the rads, and draws your eye down, making it look more imposing from the side.

LKC73
23-02-2012, 10:48 PM
They look good mate, and the lines run pretty much with your tail unit. Much better then having bare rads. Wider isnt bad either for such a kinda narrow bike like the naked VFR. Good find mate!

If anyone needs any VFR parts, i have everything for sale except the frame, swingarm, tank, engine/rads etc and the wiring harness.

It definately accelerates faster from the featherweight rear wheel and the extra 2 teeth on the rear sprocket. When I was seeing if this had been done before, all i could find on vfr forums was a lot of ifs and maybes, including a lot of maybe if you used this spindle and that hub and eccentric and modified this...
I gave ben a wheel and spindle (he had a spare swinger for measurments), and all it needs is a spacer and shim, and a lot of duke parts. My bike now has matching wheels again!

So back to 4 way colour scheme. Mounted the right one the other day, cut a small groove into the bottom of the cowl using a dremel cut off wheel to fit over an existing tab on the rad, and then bent 2 dodgy as fuck brackets out of 1mm flat bar from wholes or loops on the cowl to existing bolts on the frame. I want to change the angle slightly to follow the line on the tank a bit better, but it's hard to move them up because then they won't cover the front of the rads properly, which means they won't help air flow through the rads as much.
I also can't move it any closer to the frame because of the rad hoses.

It's been a while for this thread, but I've been doing a few things in the lead up to NFR. My metal gear discs were warped already, only about 1000ks on them, so the front wheel is out while i wait for replacements.
Halfway through a coolant flush, i thought i'd pull off the rads and paint them. I did the right one, but couldn't be bothered to do the left one. I also neatened up the rad hoses on the right side near the filler cap by shortening a couple hoses to pull everything in a little closer to the frame.
I moved the coils from outside the frame to inside in front of the airbox.
And the pics below are new rad shrouds from an er6n. It's only mounted by one brake at the moment so the angle is a bit off, but you get the idea.

So the rad shrouds are on and painted, and the rads don't look so out of place now.

Remove the er6n side panels that hide the side mounted rads.

And it looks like this.
Remove the rads and oil cooler, and its a very narrow bike.

slip in the TLR rad and cable tie it in position and it looks like this
454145424543

the second pic also shows my awesome BXP risers that i bought off ben earlier this year, and my driven carbon bars. With the rad in it's basic position, both the TLR fans should fit, and it won't sit much lower than the standard oil cooler did.
The new sp1 opil cooler will be mounted lower down, a bit behind the headers.

That paragraph makes it sound like it's almost done, but i need to make brackets for the rad and oil cooler, figure out the wiring for the fans and temp sender that turns the fans on, and get new lines for the oil cooler made up. A bit left to do, but happy with the progress from the hour and a bit i did last night.

Glad i kept trying to figure it out.
Just like the front end swap, i couldn't find any finished pics of something that actually worked. Lots of pics of different setups that looked too close to the front wheel for my liking, but i couldn't find anything had been done that actually worked.
Apart from swapping the inlet from the left to the right, it should be good, and work properly since it faces the right bloody way.

Made a quick bracket for the oil cooler last night so i can figure out what changes i need to make to the oil lines. Now i can work on the bracket for the rad.

I think it's sat november 9th, at cooma raceway.

It sticks out a bit, but it's not as wide as the twin side mounts. The alloy pipe ran across the front of the engine at the top, the black rubber hoses is where it returned into the engine at bottom.

I had been waiting on some bits and pieces to arrive, and trying to get some time here and there in the garage.
I bought some silicone hoses from the UK, hoses are nice, but service, delivery and getting the vat back were a pain in the arse. For Father's Day, I asked mish to buy me 2 temp sensor adapters to put in the hoses so I can plug in the fan sensor and the new water temp sensor. $7 + $2 postage each for alloy ones, instead of $40 for ace well or koso ones.
Some pics...

The bracket I had a mate bend for me, it bolts up to the mounting holes for the old oil cooler bracket.

And the same guy also made up a pair block off plate out of his stash of scrap ally.

And I'm thinking about using drz rad shrouds

Those shrouds look good!
I was considering something similar when I had the VTR.
