HEY ALL, IM NEY TO AUZY AND STUCK ON A LAMS BIKE FOR ANOTHER 6 MONTHS(A LITTLE ZXR250C), SO I THOUGHT ID BUILD A FIGHTER TO HAVE ALL READY WHEN MY LICENCE PERMITS....SO I HAVE STARTED GATHERING PARTS....
(SORRY ABOUT THE PICTURE QUALITY, THEY'R OFF MY PHONE)

FIRST THE R1 FORKS.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0047.jpg

AND THE R1 TRIPLES.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0073.jpg

I GOT A 2ND R6 STEERING STEM, CO I COULD KEEP THE ORIGINAL FRONT END IN TACT.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0052.jpg

THIS IS THE FIRST MOCK UP OF THE FRONT END, WITH THE R6 STEERING STEM IN THE R1 TRIPLES, THE TOP CLAMP I WILL BE USING ON THE BIKE IS AT THE ENGINEERS BEIBG RE-INFORCED NOW, SO ITS NICE AND STRONG FOR WHEN I DRILL THROUGH IT TO BOLT THE RISERS ON.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0080.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0082.jpg

A NICE SET OF TAG T2 BARS WILL DO THE TRICK!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0084.jpg

THE BOLT ON RISERS.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/IMG_0090.jpg

ILL UPDATE AS I MAKE SOME MORE PROGRESS, TILL THEN IF ANYONE HAS ANY TIPS, THROW THEM UP........

Nice choice of frame....not sure if you will get the roadworty with a wooden frame...unless it's ikea

kiwi kdx
26-07-2011, 04:24 PM
ok so i ditched the IKEA frame and picked up a write off yesterday.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/15072011814.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/inthemorning3.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/inthemorning.jpg

and this morning i got to work, the frame is fu**d! the headstem is ovaled due to the stack that wrote the bike off, so ill need a new frame eventually, but for now i just want to get the bike together and see what parts are missing.

so on goes my nice shiney R1 front end.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/barson.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/controllson.jpg

threw on a few wheels....
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/wheelson.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/wheelson2.jpg

something to put fuel in....
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/tankon.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/tankon2.jpg

and put the tail on.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/tailon.jpg

and this is how she sits at the moment.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/nearlydone.jpg

All in all im very happy, there is not much missing at all!!!
(well only the stuff i was going to pull off anyway)
now that its rolling again, my next day off will be spent getting it running as it hasent run for a few years now.

then drop it all into a new frame and get her out on the road....

any tips or ideas are welcome....

It was looking great until the tail went on, you need to jack it up about 15°

Hey can you do me a favour?
Can you measure the width of the disc mounting faces and the diameter of the step on the front wheel please?

BANDITROD
26-07-2011, 05:34 PM
Ummmm it may just be the angle of the pic but the frame looks bent to me I would have thought the part under the front of the tank would have been straight not curved it would also explain why the seat unit looks out of place

I agree, tail needs to be jacked up for it to look right, shouldnt be too hard to do. and pretty sure ditching the can goes without saying

Whoa! Slow down there mate.
Bike builds on average take between 24-36 months. You need time to gaze at it constantly whilst far too many refreshments stoke the fire for enthusiasm. Take a step back and procrastinate a bit.
Bloody amateur! LOL.

Nice work so far and personally I'd keep the tail R6 but in a single seat unit. Keep it simple until its on the road and then go all out on modifying bits and pieces.
Dont leave me hanging I like a good build up thread.

This is bringin back memories. That part of the frame under the tank is curved rod, I remember that from mine, cause it was a bitch to polish.:D It does look a bit short though, the forks are standing a bit too straight me thinks. The headstem looks like it got a fair tweak when it was stacked. This was how mine looked before i sold it.

hey guys, i think final tweaks may be a fair way off yet.....
like i said, today was to get the bike rolling to see what is missing,

but you are all right, the frame is toast!!!! with the headstem fully done up
there is about 5mm of play, back and forth, it is now oval instead of round!

of course the can will be going and a few more mods will be comming, but first
i need to get it running and legal, then ill start to play with it a bit more.

Jules ill measure it up for you tomorow if i make it home before it gets dark,
but im a bit unsere what step u want me to measure?

Hey mate, Ivan is the one who asked for the measurements, not me :D

What is the wheel u have, R1 or R6? and do u have discs for it? i got a set of the R1 I'm about to chuck on ebay, along with the standard brake lines

kiwi kdx
26-07-2011, 09:33 PM

its an R6 wheel, i have the disks for it but the rim also is fu***d!

so if anyone has a spare wheel i can buy... let me know....

I'm after the diameter that the disc locates on, or the size of the big hole in the disc itself .. thanks man

Ok, so its my day off and i have picked up the new frame.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/newframe.jpg

While i was at the wreckers, they were tearing down an R6 race bike that had just come in from Japan...............

New exhaust system, CHECK!!!!!!

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/newexhaust2.jpg
this Sexy bit of kit weighs NOTHING!!!!!!

on goes the new frame.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/innewframe.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/newframeswingarm.jpg

and got the rear wheel on.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/newframerearend.jpg

also picked up the top triple from being re-inforced.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/weldedclamp1.jpg

and now im waiting for the new headstem bearings turn up, so i can get the front end on.

Faark that's a LOT of weld in the underside of the top clamp.

Hope it's still straight.

wackyrider
02-08-2011, 03:45 PM
WOW, they seem to have gone crazy there with welding. They could have cleand up as well. Lke Hillsy said, I hope the clamp hasn't warped. Might wanna check it before putting it on the bike.

Good score on the exhaust mate! Agree with that top clamp tho, hope its still straight...

kiwi kdx
02-08-2011, 04:12 PM
yeah, the weld will need a clean up, but i have checked it to see it it was still straight and
its perfect, its not all weld there is alloy plate to fill in the bigger parts of the gaps and
then weld all round and over top, better safe then sorry!!!

as far as the exhaust goes, it was one of those "rite place rite time" scores!
the pics done do it justice! and the whole system would be lucky to weigh 2.5kg... seriouslly!!!

just couldn't pass it up for a mesley $250!

here is a few more pics.

Please explain to me why the top clamp needed reinforcing?

Do you honestly think you will be able to pull a couple of 10mm or so bolts through a 5 or 6mm thick alloy with a set of handle bars that are only 22mm dia and maybe 4mm wall thickness.

Silliest thing I seen this year

Doing a good job putting together a previously crashed bike ready for rego. It's not a streetfighter yet

kiwi kdx
02-08-2011, 09:19 PM
i have seen a few clamps break after drilling, it may be the silliest thing you have seen, but i'd rather have you laughing at me
than have it break!

and yes it is far from being a fighter, but they all start somewhere
thats why its called a build!

my glass is half full, so im happy......

Deano
02-08-2011, 09:36 PM
In 6 odd years and being on a couple of forums I have never seen nor heard of a broken triple from drilling. But hey like you say better to be safe than sorry. Just make sure you use high tensile bolts for the risers and solid bar for the handlebars so they dont break. Better to be safe than sorry

Good luck with the build mate

It's a good feeling innit? I got my ZX9 from the auctions with a busted stator cover and bugger all oil in it and it was a massive relief to hear it fire up and not go clank.

Keep at it ;)

It sure is!!!!! I was getting a little worried with all the cash I have been putting into it
Without having it running, but I'm stoked now!

Also made a start on my headlight mounts

Headlights under $10 bucks I mite add!!!!
I just refuse to pay what people are asking for mounts!
So I start with two sets of $4 downpipe brackets from bunnings,
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/a43517c6.jpg

Then add some $1.95 rubber stripping from clarks,
Then bolt them on!!!

I still need to make up 2 plates to hold the headlight and the dash, then I'll get it all
Powder coated, so it may get a little over $10 bucks but I'm ok with it.

I'm loving what you are doing with this build. I think I'm going to go the same way with the headlight mounts.... Been thinking along the same lines since Lance showed me his.

Ok so I just put my mirrors on and I reckon they have ruined the whole look of
The bike!!! I think I need some mirrors that sit way lower!
What are your thoughts?

Reverse them and run them upside down. Or at least try it that way and see if they'll work for ya!

I agree with Shadow. Flick them over. A lot of Motard guys put their mirrors under the bars. Looks much cleaner.

The first mock up of my headlight mounts
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/2a6b310c.jpg

Sits a little further forward than I wanted, but the dash
Fits behind it nicley

There seems to be too much of a gap behind the light. Could u angle the dash a bit to see if the light can move further in?

BANDITROD
13-09-2011, 07:16 PM
Perhaps move the ignition and cut the mount off the triple clamp that would allow you to move it in closer

kiwi kdx
13-09-2011, 08:28 PM
I did think of that, but then I loose my steering lock.
I might go back to my original idea of mounting the dash
On the bars....

so after hours and hours of trauling the net looking for some form of clamp/mount to fit to a 28.5mm fat bar, there is nothing!!!!

so this is what i have come up with:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/0f3ee4f5.jpg

thats rite, scope mounts!!!!! they are 30mm so a nice little rubber bush and they will be perfect! they even have a nice little thread tapped into them so i can bolt the base plate for my dash straigh to it! and at $9.95 delivered out of good old Hong Kong, who could resist?

xa-mont

yeah dash on the bars is the way to go. Jules' is like that and it looks cool.

Cut and shut the link pipe so it put the can on the same angle as the bottom of the duct tail.

kiwi kdx
19-09-2011, 05:15 PM
yes! i am leaning towards the top one too.

the red line by the foot peg is where i want to cut the headders to
bring the can closer to the peg.

and the two red lines on the can is roughley the length i want it.

Then run a bracket from your foot peg to hold it on. That's what i did. On long runs you sometimes get a numb foot at slow speeds because of it though. Mind you, my pipe is very noisy and vibrates heaps.

Had a bit of a play with the can today, it's going to be just over 200mm

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/ef9aeda3.jpg

Cut down and re-packed
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/f49bc314.jpg

And on the bike

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg173/d21terrano/56846763.jpg

I can bring the can down about 45mm with out too much
Trouble, I can go a further 55mm after that but
It means cutting and re welding the spring retainers for
The can back on.

xa-mont
20-09-2011, 04:06 PM
cut and reweld mate, if you can't do it i'm sure it would cost you 3/4 of fuck all to get someone to do it... i think it needs to go down for sure. At this stage it looks like there is more straight pipe than muffler and it just looks weird.

kiwi kdx
20-09-2011, 04:22 PM
Yeah the more I looked at it the more I agree

I cut it down as much as I can, there is no more straight pipe,
The can is sitting rite on the bend now.
