A quick question guys I just went to my local post office to send a parcel ...I sent a box that was about 400mm x 400mm square About 1kg and they stung me $48 bucks it doesn't sound right to me considering the same box was sent to me with about 14kgs in it for half that price ....I don't understand why it would be different ....rant over

They charge you by the cubed weight or something. So even if your box is light, you're paying for the space it's using.

Check here- http://auspost.com.au/apps/domestic-parcel.html

That's what he told me large but I couldn't work out why it was over twice as much as it cost to get sent to me with heaps more weight

They use a cubic weight measurement. You get the 3 measurements of the box (in metres), multiply them together then multiply that by 250 to get the cubic weight.

If that's greater than the physical weight, they use that instead to calculate the postage (every transport company does this in some fashion).

Having said that they might have fucked it up or the PO sending you the box in the first place might have f'd up too.

There's a postage calculator over here if you want to check:

Never send a square box! Fold all the edges in and around the item, then u get charged by weight!

Then it'll roll off the mail centre dock and get crushed by a forklift.

I mailed my JMC swingarm sydney to melbourne for just under $20. I just bubble wrapped the shit out of it, as it was a stramge shape, and just under 1m long, only got charged for weight.

All articles are placed in these ULDs for transport hence the maximum size limits. If they don't fit in one of these, they don't get posted.
A 1200 Bandit frame doesn't fit. I know from experience. :(

I know mate - I work for Post as well (I was kinda having a bit of a joke).

Still, a visit to your nearest Mail Centre Re-Wrap area will astound you with how things can get damaged from "insufficient packaging"

And the ULD tipper can be fun to watch as well [:0]

I have never had a problem with him before but lately I have noticed it seems to be costing a lot more than it used too.... oh well I'm over it now

My favourite run used to be the Sunshine Parcel Depot to Underwood Mail Centre. 36hrs to do a 19hr drive. And always fuck all weight carrying parcel post ULD's.
