Ok guys I had a mate drop off his 1100 motor today with a handful of cash and he wants me to rebuild it for him first thing I want to know is how far it can go without causing other dramas

So far I'm looking at a je piston kit which will take it to 1196cc 81mm ...will I need to go for aftermarket rods or not

Next question is what's the best gasket kit for the job and will I need to do any bottom end work at all

Just so you know this motor is running fine but he just thought he may aswell freshen it up while the bike is in bits

So what other do's and don'ts are there to look out for

Cheers in advance

You will need to use a new 1127 or 1157 block to bore to anything bigger than 79mm on a 1052 there's just not enough meat in the liners to go any bigger, you will also need the top crankcase machining to accept the bigger liners, you don't need new rods as it's only the same as fitting a 1216 to a Slingy or B12. As far as gaskets use either Cometic or Wiseco, I tend to use the Wiseco sprung steel head gaskets and a steel base gasket as these give more reliability when setting the deck height.
Get some slotted cam sprockets and dial the cams in also get a manual camchain tensioner they are much more reliable than the stock item.
Measure the combustion volumes and the above piston volumes at TDC so you can determine the correct deck height for the compression you want to run. Generally on these motors I have the block skimmed to give a zero deck with no gaskets, then with a Wiseco base and head gasket fitted you get 0.95mm squish which is fine on these motors, but you will need to plasticine the motor to check piston valve clearances. The slabby bottom end is pretty tough so itll not really need anything else other than a refresh.

Not "motor building" but on mine I was told to go
4-degree ignition advance and later model bigger
carb's. Didn't the Slabby-11 have 34mm's ?

Not 100% sure on the advancer but would the stock
25 year old carb's be up to feeding a big-bore kit ?

1109 is the easiest over size if you use wisco it comes with the gaskets, you might as well change the shells while you are there I have a manual if you want it mate.

I've got a set of 36mm slingshot carbs and manifold rubbers that would suit this ;)

Ok next question is apparently this thing jumps out of second gear all the time I guessing maybe bent selector fork is this a common thing or not

If it is jumping out of second gear then you will find that the gear selction dogs on seconds and fifth gear pinions on the output shaft are damaged, the edges of the engagement dogs will be getting chipped or rounded off,the selector fork will have a crescent shaped groove in the side of it, made as the gear trys to kick back out of 2nd.
You have 2 options, if the damage is not too bad then the gear dogs can be undercut, and rehardened and a new selector fork fitted. If the gear dogs are too badly worn then replacement is the only option, you'll need both 2nd and 5th on the outputshaft and the matching righthand selector fork (as you're sat on the bike)

its a lot cheaper to buy a bandit 12 motor and a dyna ignition. The 34 mm hyper carbs work well on these ,give the motor heaps of torque.done it a few time before thats what iam doing to my latest one .just my thoughts

After tuning mine and fixing the clutch second was jumping out.

Once i got it to bits i ended up with a new 1st(slightest wear, its mate was good and i didn't want to strip it again ) 3rd? 2nd 5th and 2 forks.

If the motor is fine why not put a turbo on it?

Carb's are easy to set up for turbo (I'm about to stagger tune mine so might change my mind:D )

BANDITROD

Nah I don't think my mate would be to keen for a turbo
