So i've been busy making new carbon rearsets and carbon top clamp. i took the angle grinder to my old carbon rear fairing and reshaped the underside and made a new carbon undertray to fit. i machined some risers to suit the renthal flat bars. I got some dodgy mob up at Brookvale by the name of Extreme Creations to a cnc billet bottom clamp. Still heaps to go but i'm having fun out in the shed.

16-06-2011, 09:18 PM
yeah was in rapid a few years ago. lots of changes since then; motor, turbo, efi, extra 80hp. it is a standard subframe. it's a zxr750L model and those undertrays are very hard to come by. i just cut the shit out of mine to make the new one. have a look on www.redmonkey.com/7r

16-06-2011, 09:27 PM
Looks good Josh, I reckon you need to cut a bit out of the brake lever to lighten it up a bit ( looks wise) because the rest of the rearset looks a lot slimmer now. Don't you love carbon & bog dust, looks like you've go a good layer all over the shed....

i was lucky enough to get my hands on a bunch of 2mm thick carbon sheets from an aircraft manufacturing place. i laminated them together than used a combination of angle grinder, mill, router, and any other tool you can think of. pain in the ass, messy toxic shit that bluntens all your tools. simple really.

Yeah, i turned them up on my lathe and made the lugs then ben welded it together for me. i'm going to bolt up a carbon bracket to mount the headlight. The plan is to paint or powder coat them and the bottom triple black to tie in with the carbon top clamp.

latheboy
25-06-2011, 10:53 PM
Thats a great bike, well done...

I would lower the headlight so the bottom is at the same height as the lower edge (at the front) of the bottom clamp.

Whats the specs on the turbo/injection? Did you tune it?

mr.zxr
26-06-2011, 09:46 AM
224hp at the wheel. i only run a 10,000 rpm rev cut and 12psi boost. when i dynoed it a few years ago, i had blown a few motors up and was very cautious with this one. could probably push more but it's wild to ride as it is with standard wheel base.

I got myself a set from a ZX14 off US ebay. With the aussie dollar the way it is was hard to pass up. You wont regret getting them.
By the way, nice bike mate.

mr.zxr

18-07-2011, 07:48 PM
That front end is looking fantastic.

Is the top clamp just slipped over the forks leaving all the clamping to be done by the bottom triple?

Bet ur using some good loctite on that single nut holding the top triple on [:0]:)

You've got a talent with the carbon for sure.

mr.zxr
18-07-2011, 08:32 PM
thanks for the comments. the top carbon clamp is a cover that slips over the top of the stock top clamp. purely for looks. the stock clamp does up as it normally would and provides all the strength and the top nut only holds the cover in place. it's also secured by the riser bolts. it was a fuckin mission to make but i'm real happy with the result.

yeah it sits pretty close to the ground. it looks bloody ugly too. the old fairings used to hide alot of ugly shit. i'm tempted to take it off but it made a massive difference in cooling. i'm thinking of some kind of belly pan to hide it's uglyness.

I was more concerned about stone strike.

mr.zxr
19-07-2011, 10:02 AM
it's made from 2mm aluminium and is pretty robust. it's scraped a couple of times over speed humps and held up ok. i'd still prefer somethimg a bit nicer looking so any suggestions welcome.

latheboy
19-07-2011, 10:43 AM
Is there a pump on the oil cooler?
Is that the only oil cooler on the bike?

I'm not running a cooler between the turbo drain and the motor, not to say you shouldn't but do you even need it?

mr.zxr
19-07-2011, 10:56 AM
i've got a scavange pump just after the oil cooler and yes i definately did need it. unless there is a real good fall after the turbo down to the sump you need a pump. i had the pump fail once down the quater and i blew the motor up because it blew oil pass the seals in the turbo and that caused it to detonate.:(

I meant, do you need the cooler there?
Could you run just the pump and not the cooler?

mr.zxr
19-07-2011, 01:09 PM
ahhhh, i see. no you probably don't need one there. the zxr's have a water over oil cooler down near the oil filter. I had overheating issues so i added the other oil cooler and it made a big difference.

BANDITROD
19-07-2011, 01:16 PM

let me tell you, i needed a few bacardi's to steady my hand before ripping into my tank with a holesaw. in the end it wasn't too hard but in the back of mind i was thinking "this is a very rare aluminium tank, don't fuck it up, now where's that bacardi". the plan is to mount my boost guage and idiot light cluster into the tank.

xa-mont
22-07-2011, 10:09 AM

it's in plain view with an open face helmet, but let me assure you i will not be getting one of them. i'll just be nodding my head slightly to check the speed. the idiot lights are below your normal view so i made them very bright and they catch your attention easily. i was a little worried about it but a small sacrifice to practicality for looks was worth it i think.
