That exhaust is fucking fantastic Simon, as for the price I'm sure its worth everything it has cost you. ;)

This is a great thread Simon!
I've been over to Simon's place to view the actual bike, it is starting to come together, albeit in fitup stage. It is going to be awesome, 1260!! Please keep the photos and commentary coming, that one-off exhaust system you have is something special, and the triple clamps are quite an eyeful. I'm off to the shed to paint a Katana tank, beautiful weather and all and being inspired by this thread.

Well after a night drinking Dylans home brew and sipping on a cheap Shiraz with Geoff last night I had a few thoughts about the look of my bike.Getting pissed and looking through boxes of bits is great and the ideas that come up are fantastic ( at the time). In the cold light of day, hmm. Anyway I came across the bodywork of my old fighter and thought that could be interesting.
What I had was the tank, sidepanels and saddle from a GS 1000 and as them and the GSX'es share a few similarities I mocked up the bodywork.
1st is the standard GSX set up

Next is with the GS tank, sidepanels and GSX seat

Finally with the GS tank, sidepanels and seat

I was thinking that if I decided to use my GS tank, sidepanels and seat then i could shorten the frame rails that the seat rests on, shorten my exaust pipe under the seat and pull the tailpiece up towards the saddle, sort of Bob it. Either way I would be keeping the GSX tailpiece and rear light. If I did this it would save me money on a paint job and getting my GSX saddle recovered.

Just wondering what people thought

Do it Simon it would look the goods.

22-04-2012, 03:55 PM
+1 do it , the shorter rear seat etc would balance with the front (i think anyhow)

BANDITROD
22-04-2012, 03:59 PM
do it

mozza
22-04-2012, 04:08 PM
stay with the GSX bits, the side panels look a bit out of place as GS

stiffsimon
22-04-2012, 04:33 PM
Hmm, I think you're right Mozza, the sidepanels do look a bit wank but the shortened saddle feels better to me than the hoooge GSX saddle. But if I did that then it's just a GSX wiv a GS saddle and tank which might look a bit bolted on. Whereas if I used the tank, sidepanels and saddle then it might be, er, more confusing, like er what the fuck is that rather than oh he's put a GS tank on a GSX. I need this bike to make me go weak at the knees when I open the garage door in the morning so it has to look, just so.

K6Thou
22-04-2012, 05:58 PM
Would it be possible to use the GS tank with the GSX side covers, GS seat and shortened GSX tail ??

Gix11
23-04-2012, 02:34 PM
I'm with K6 on this one. The original side panels with the GS tank are the pick I reckon.

+1 on k6's theory.

ozzy1100
24-04-2012, 11:40 AM
more plus on k6 option only worry will be the side covers

stiffsimon
24-04-2012, 01:45 PM
Seems to be the GS tank, short GS saddle, original GSX side covers and original GSX tailpiece with frame rails and exhaust shortened to pull the tail piece up close to the saddle is the preferred option of people that have commented. Thing is though the GS tank is a straight swap with no mods needed so it looks like all that I'm looking at is a frame and exhaust shortening and painting the side covers and tail piece the same colour as the tank. If indeed this the option I choose.

I'd just like to say a BIG thank you to Mr. Trevor Birrell for the work he's done on my cylinder head. It arrived in the post yesterday and I was obviously keen to have a look. I was gob smacked when I pulled it out the box and can't wait to get this thing up and running. I'm hoping this head will go some way in keeping up with a certain Oldskool GSX Mr. Turbo, eh Geoff

Just finished reading the thread. WAY COOL.
We will have to get you and Live Wire ( prostock engine kat) together when you are finished.
I know what you mean with having a drink and getting inspiration.
I gave my bussa to a mate to do a streamlined seat for land speed racing-- it took him 2 weeks before he could start.
He DOESN"T DRINK so the insperation was verry slow.
hurry up and finish

OK, it's been a wee while but there's a little bit of progress ;) I recently collected my motor from T-Rex racing after being lovingly and expertly assembled by the man who knows how to put together proper motors properly, Mr Rex Wolfenden. I went down to his workshop(which is always a pleasure) and was quite gobsmacked by what was waiting for me. Rex is quite confident that this motor will put a smile on my face without coughing it's guts up AND remain oiltight. Mr Wolfenden take a bow

http://i808.photobucket.com/albums/zz9/siminoz63/motor of the beast/Randombikestuff004.jpg

My motor may not be as powerful as a GSX-R, R1, ZXR, CBR, etc but by fuck it looks a shit load better than any of those ugly fuckers, don't you think :p

Very nice simon, but please tell me you are going to do something with the ignition cover.

stiffsimon
26-06-2012, 09:02 PM
LOL Yeah the ignition cover has been blasted. The clutch cover is just a spare and all the covers are off for a proper polishing and then I need to source stickers for the ignition cover and alternator cover and then it's all ready to go into hibernation until the rest of the bike is finished, plated, painted, polished and then pop the motor in connect wiring fit carbs add oil, NO COOLANT REQUIRED and then hit the button. Can't wait but I'll have to cause building, tuning and blinging these old bruisers is FUCKIN expensive!!!!

You don't know anybody that wants a complete Speed Triple single sided swing arm, wheel, shock, linkages, etc do you? ;)

ozzy1100
17-01-2013, 02:49 PM
1560 barrel is to much problems and money for the street but around the 1460 mark is easy enough but heat becomes the prob on all big blocks, but as my old mate say just dont stop for traffic.
but to be fare a 1170 or bigger is fine, simon's 1260 will be more power than he can ride and most of that is made in the head anyway, big blocks just tend to make a bit more grunt but still bepends on the monkey putting it together. Been more than a few 1400cc plus motors put to shame at the track with 1170cc motors.

stiffsimon

Money well spent indeed but then there would probably be machining work needed doing for the speedo drive, wheel spindles, and so on and so forth. Maybe if they're still for sale when my insurance pay out comes through then they'll probably get much higher up my list of must have/ will have. They are very tempting though I have to admit and yes you're right they are a good price.

Rearsets are made by Manta Engineering here in Melbourne http://www.mantaent.com.au/project.php and are adjustable via cam with roller ball bearings and are fully dismantleable. They are race pegs and non foldable and footpegs have teeth like a Pitbull.
Lynton as of yet I don't know how much this awesome bracket will cost me but Deano will tell me in the fullness of time as it's all his work. I've noticed that he's a bit of a legend really when it comes to designing and manufacturing things with an eye to detail that puts me, and many others, to shame.

That bike has one of my old 1100 motors in it, it's owned by one of the committee members of the VJMC.

OK TK so who is this bloke cause I'd very much like to meet him.

Thanks for the comments whale by the way.The bike is back in my garage and I've gotten my tank modified and prepped (pics to follow when I get it home from work) and the seat base has been turned from scrap into something good and solid to rest my arse on.

I'm hoping that I can get a bit of a get go going on with this now as my Speed Triple is back on the road and I've now got a bit more free time to continue with this build. I'm hoping to get it finished in time for the Philip Island classic in January next year, let's see.

As a side note I had a go on my mates Kat 1100 with freshened up top end and sorted 36mm Mikuni flatslides courtesy of Gylan. It was a timely reminder as to why I chose this motor and brought back memories of how awesome these motors are and how fuckin kick arse they can be.

Anybody know how to deseam wheels?

Can't rember his name, I sold him a Kat moteur through Evilbay & delivered it to his joint in Croydon, spent a bit of time there drooling on all his aircooled goodness. He's a nice bloke & extremely talented.

what's the progress here Simon ? any news ?

stiffsimon
03-08-2013, 09:12 AM
There has been some progress but not much new pics at the moment. As I speak Deano is doing a small mod to my frame to allow the oil cooler to be mounted approx 8mm lower and this means that I'll have full steering lock rather than just about 30 degrees either way.
When Dean has finished the dry build will begin as I've sourced pretty much all that is required other than chain, sprockets, tyres etc.

I've just got a whole load of Motogadget goodliness (including Speedo and tacho within my rearview mirror), http://motogadget.com/en/multiview.html M unit, instrument lighting, LED rear lights and and stuff. My plan is to have my instrument console redundant but still illuminated with all the instrumentation in the multiview which means I'll be able to do away with speedo cable and tach cable and clean up the look of the bike in doing so. When the dry build starts I'll get all this wired up and functioning and then it'll be stripped down again and off for paint, plating, polishing etc.

The rear brake set up was also a bit shit in that the rear brake master cylinder was sitting almost vertical and was sitting right in front of the sidepanel and cleared the sidepanel by 2-3mm. So the rear footrest mounting plate is being redesigned so that the master cylinder lies forward by approx 45 degrees and then the rear brake line can pass through the subframe tubes and disappear out of sight and will no longer foul the sidepanel.

Sad to say though that Peter has now shut up shop and is no longer trading as Manta Enterprises.

How's the Kat coming along by the way?

Anytime really Bryn. I've got pretty much everything sorted out and ready for plating and have enough spares to do the dry build with. I had no idea that Manta had shut its doors. Not much news with mine, I've fitted and bled all the brake lines, sourced a brand new Katana tank and sorted out a few fairing brackets that weren't quite right. I've designed myself an oil catch tank that's been fabricated up and currently getting powder coated and I've also installed an undertray.
I sent my swinger away to be polished and it came back chromed !!! It wasn't what I wanted but wasn't really a bad thing either, it seems a bit heavier due to the chrome and I had some concerns about embrittlement but after further investigation it seems that alloy doesn't suffer embrittlement and it's related to steel with welds and oxidisation.

It's currently a full roller !!!

For the fixings you might wanna try my bloke in Pom land. Very fast service, ( Delivered 5 days from order), and fair price. $158 for every nut, bolt and washer for the 380. megapacks.co.uk or andy@megapacks.co.uk This specialises in old skool cool. BZP or SS hex cap, hex, pz2 button.

Yeah cheers for that Bryn.
I had a look at his site after you posted up about him before and I'm probably going to be putting in an order.
I've got most of the engine casing bolts already sourced though and am using original zook hex head bolts.
I'm looking to get some other things plated though such as swingarm pivot bolts, wheel spindles and so on. I'll need to measure and count the bolts and things I need for the rest of the bike and see if it's cheaper to get them plated or just buy new from your man back home, cheers mate.

I'd just like to say a BIG thanks to Deano for sorting out a lot of things, enabling the build to go forward and changing shitty niggly little things into something that works and looks factory made too, cheers mate. Although it looks like a motorbike there's still a shit load of work to be done not least of which is getting all the magic smoke stuff installed and working properly

Yeah still a long long way to go though.Next thing to do is re assemble my carbs which have been away getting hydra blasted and my god they've come up nicely. So good in fact that I've become a little bit obsessed with wet blasting and am in the process of trying to get my dry blast cabinet converted into a wet blast cabinet. There's a guy in America that reckons this can be done relatively easily. On his website he is selling a self contained wet blast cabinet for $2000 US.

http://www.wetblasting.com/Products/3624-Vapor-Blast-Machine

As the cabinet looks identical to my own I thought that converting it should be possible. Watch this space.

Top work Simon ! Looking great ! Deano is the man for fiddly bits that need fabbing. Huge fan of soda blasting too. Much better "natural" finish than grit. Hope this build is gonna move along now, very cool project.

Er yeah um it's not going to be a single shock it's just that the bushing of the shock got damaged when I took the shock off and I need to renew the bushing. Normal business will be resumed soon. Off to collect a new footrest mounting plate this morning redesigned so that the reservoir is laying almost horizontal so that it doesn't foul the side panel.

OK, so I spent all day today very carefully reassembling my flatties. Float height checked and adjusted, new s/s cap screws, instruction manual read and re read, check exploded view of carbs on pooter many many times, new O-rings, new gaskets, no beer and finally at the end of the day all assembled and goodly looking. Free beer to whoever spots my deliberate mistake first. FUCK. Never mind I just need to take them all apart and re assemble them again, easy!!

The factory guages are kept just for cosmetic reasons. They're not going to be be connected or be functioning as all my instrumentation will be in my rear view mirror cause it's a Motogadget multiview. I wanted to keep the bike looking like an 11 ET and the clocks, rear light, petrol tank, headlight, instruments and hooge seat are all part of that look. Glad you like what I'm doing with it though mate.

You know what it's like, good intentions and all that. I was hoping to have it at the show n shine at the PI classic next weekend but as usual life keeps getting in the way. As you may remember my car got murdered last year so have been using the girlfriends car. Being a Renault though it broke down AGAIN. This time though I'd had enough and another car was needed so that took away funds and made me a little bit stuck for transport for a while.

As the dry build continued I got to the point of sourcing all my electrical stuff ready for fitting. as most of it is Motogadget stuff and that I'd got quite a sophisticated alarm/immobiliser and remote start for install I thought that it would be prudent to get somebody who knew what they were doing to install it all and make it work. I decided that because all the Motogadget wiring is so fuckin fine and delicate that it would probably be better to get a complete new wiring loom made up rather than fitting all this new stuff to the original Suzuki wiring loom. Also a lot of the old loom would be redundant now and that there are better ways now of wiring up these old Zooks than how Suzuki did it in the first place.

Finding somebody that was able to, had the time to or had the expertise to was an unrewarding task. I turned to Clyde Wolfenden who had done a fantastic job in remaking my footrest hanger earlier.
Being a bit Oldskool Clyde was a little bemused by some of the stuff I was talking about and even more so when I deposited all my Motogadget loveliness on his doorstep. he said to give him a couple of weeks to think about and he would let me know but couldn't promise anything.
Give him his credit though he called me back and said he'd give it a go.

He wasn't able to give me a timeline but said things were pretty quiet at the moment so maybe a month to six weeks. Two weeks later he called me and told me that he had just got a load of work come in that needed doing for the PI classic. Who am I to stand in the way of Oz riders thrashing the Brits and the yanks again so I was OK to wait.

I later found out that my alarm/immobiliser would be incompatible with RFID ignition switches and as I wanted to use a Motogadget Mlock I had a bit of research to do. I decided finally to not install the alarm/immobiliser or the remote start function. I called Clyde to tell him this and I heard an audible sigh of relief on the other end of the phone :D

The upshot of this is that it would obviously make my new loom a lot easier to make and cheaper too. All good.

Hopefully after the PI classic Clyde will be able to get back on to it. He did ask me to make sure that he had everything needed to fire the engine up as he would need to do this to check that everything works. I think he just wanted the opportunity to listen to a proper motorbike engine roaring it's authority rather than listening to all these effette water cooled modern thingy bike engines. Anyway that sounded promising and that being the case when I get the bike back it should be ready for strip down, panit, plate, polish, etc.

Then it's off to Gibbo's to harass and cajole to apply his touch to my bodywork.
I'm thinking of Heron Suzuki colours with a bit of a modern interpretation. Watch this space.
