Hey, I started this build some years ago and then left it in the garage to collect dust unfinished, i bought a supra with the intentions of time attack race's while working on that the delays came up due to waiting for parts and things not getting done, this is when i took notice of this dusty ZX7 sitting under a cover in the corner, after a few thoughts i decided why not finish it and then ride it, atleast i will have something to ride around.

Anyway one thing lead to another and this is the outcome, i was very happy of how it came out and now that is near on the end i am already hunting down a 09 zx10, i have designed the over all look of what i will build taking some things from the zx7 build, already on their way are some items for the ZX10, it will also have a single sided swinger from an MV augusta, if i can find one.

The ZX7 build by me:

Not yet, all it needs is the dash installed indicators and rear-sets plus chain, funny enough if anyone wants after market rear-sets 04-06 r1 fit direct, i have the brake side already but stock one, i will get some adjustable.

As for paint the pan, tail and tank plus mask will be painted in Anthracite.

it set me back around $180 from the machine shop to get bearings and the spacer in the center machined to the shaft size, the R1 swinger fits perfectly in between the zx frame, no shimming was required, the shock required new mounting tabs welded on the frame other than that im using original r1 dog bones, my intention was to fill the hole in the middle to make the swing arm look more beefier but maybe later (06 swing-arm). also the r1 swinger bearing area was different on each side so i had to get one side machined out to fit the same size bearings as the other side.
I have the r1 rear wheel to go on with the brakes, just trying to hunt down an 08 front r1 wheel with 04-06 brakes, reason is because the later wheels discs are spaced further apart and 04-06 had the 320mm rotors which match the zx rotor size.

Many people dont believe me when i tell them the mask has e stamped lights in it, they are 38mm, smallest of its type, i imagine the police will try and pick on that 2.

Got quite bit done today, fiber glass is so much fun to work with if you have the right gear, never do it without acetone handy. ive been doing alot of fiberglass work 6yrs ago, it all came back to me.
I also thought the tail was off center which was annoying because i spent most of the time looking from the rear wheel which was the culprit, it wasnt in straight but then again its only in there temporary, quick check was done to make sure, also noticed fuel cap isn't centered.

Another weekend and more progress, i changed direction on the sided and opted for a smooth look rather than linear so it matches the tank, tail light will look like its meant to be in there.

the undertail all the way down is a seperate piece isn't it?

Gix11
23-05-2011, 10:29 PM
That's what I'd have thought but how is it going to attach to the top part tidily?

DellRoy
23-05-2011, 11:14 PM
I already thought of that, they will be 2 separate parts, the top seat one bit and then the under -tail plus sides will be one piece also, the top seat will be held down with some bolts which will hold the leather cushion down, that will be able to be removed via hand under the tail, it will have counter sunk alen head bolts underneath which will be black along with the under tail.

pav69
28-05-2011, 07:47 PM
hey mate with the cardboard under the glass what happens with it,or are these pieces just moulds for the parts to be used .and how did you go about glassing the under tail on the bike or off

DellRoy
29-05-2011, 08:32 PM
Another solid day of working on the tail.

Attaching the side parts to the underside:
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/002-3.jpg
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/005-4.jpg

Done
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/006-5.jpg

Test fit the underside, Fits great
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/007-3.jpg

Top part on, i made it so it sits over the sides, it will look better this way because top and bottom half will be 2 separate colors.
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/009-5.jpg
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/011-4.jpg
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/012-4.jpg
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/015-5.jpg

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/023-1.jpg

And heres the trick i will use to keep the sides in without bolts, brackets that use the original part of the tank to keep it in place.

all the glass will be original pieces no mold here, there is no cardboard in the glass, what i did is lay a sheet of glass down on something flat (15mm MDF) board with a release agent on top of plastic, i then cut out a 1m x 600 sheet of matte and laid it down and glassed it, the next day i had a square piece of solid matting which then i traced the shapes i made out of cardboard cut it out and taped it on then glassed attachments on.
Making a mold is good for a direct finish but you use to much material and for a one off thing the negative of the mold will be a waste.
its all really light as its only one sheet, dont use the woven glass, looks like carbonfiber but white, it does not like to do corners.
Also if you want to bend the fiberglass you cut a shallow groove and fold it then set the angle you want and glass it near the fold.

It has all been done while on the bike, nothing worse than putting all that work into it and then going to fit and its off.

Update, The Flow coat came out quite well, Note that its the brush type not the spray gun coat as there a different types.

I had to work fast as i had over 1sq M to coat and it was basically just slap it on as much as possible.

so i set it out to have quick access to all of them and raised it from the ground at working height
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/001-8.jpg

Things used to prepare:
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/002-7.jpg
Note that the cheap brush leaves alot more streaks and it ends up pulling the coating rather than laying it on so you will have to splash out for a more pricey one (cleaning it in acetone will have it good a new)

The end result, now all that i have to do is sand it and prepare for painting.
because the coating was to thick the undertail didn't fit in properly after some sanding it will look like it was meant to be there it sits pretty close so i snapped some shots of the end result. oh i also had time to strip the paint off the tank while the flow coat was drying.

Hard to comment when you have so much talent....but this is the internet so here we go. LOL
Is it possible to move the belly pan forward about 100mm so that its lines match up with the tail unit? Its the current colours that highlight the mismatch in the lines and it just seems a little out of place. Just sayin' is all. You can tell me to get fucked if you like...everyone else does

Otherwise its a fantastic build and you should be pleased.

Moving it forward will make the bike appear longer, i want to try and keep it as compact as possible, also i have less than 100mm to the Tyre so its not possible with out much modification.

Also its in its primer thats not the final colour, it will be that metallic charcoal color as the supra above, the undertail will be kept matte black.

It actually fits in there quite well, all that is needed will be spacers and brackets, possible kit for anyone wanting to do the same to their Zx7, think about it, instead of a rebuild for more power and upgraded carbs, that could all be ditched for the GSXR motor, oh and its a k5-k6 not 08 sorry, the motor i have is in pretty good nick but i just dont want to deal with carbs on a bike, im leaning more towards the inj side of things also if it goes to another level there are turbo kits readily avail for the gsxr 1000 so really it seems to make sense.

This bike is coming along great.

But keep an eye on that rear fender thingy, I burnt through a brand new paint job on a steel front guard when the tyre grew the first time I cranked it up on the highway, so you need to make sure there is an adequate gap between the tyre and fender.

Some administrator has cocked up my old user, cant even log in to it anymore.

anyway same person different username here,

I have been looking around for a 96-97 zx9 engine, fark they are hard to find, upon looking, boredom started to kick in i went out and purchased a gsxr 1000 07 model, i was sick of not having a bike to ride, anyway she didnt last long in standard form, carriorezza wheels, mich pilot power 2ct, galfer rotors and yoshi jomo race fairings, along with galfer brake lines, shift kit, power commander, shorty levers, giles chain blocks and rearsets in the mix and a few more bits.

i am still looking for a good zx9b motor, preferably 96-97 as they had 10 more hp than their predecessors so many smoking turds out there with a sloppy 100,000ks on them.

tokito 6pots for the front, same bolt spacing, came off a 02 gsxr 1000.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/20120219_192651.jpg

Front fork covers may also be new to you guys keeping an eye on this.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/34jzgte/ZXR%20fighter/20120219_175935.jpg

Waiting for the right motor to turn up, there is a built one in nsw with forged internals ect but guy seems bit dogy when it comes to taking photos or proving receipts.

Those motors are hard to find. i just bought a wreck just for the motor. turns out one of the cases has a crack in the front from the crash. The internals are in good condition though. whatever happened to the gsxr1000 motor implant?

Mate, all the passwords were lost when the old website database was transferred over (completely different forum software wouldn't talk to old software). All you have to do is email me like Frank said with the problem and I can sort it. Or you could just blame me for cocking it up. Choice is yours.

Its not my bike, it turns out that it wont fit, cutting the frame is required in many areas so that idea is down the toilet.

Lets just say im going to have a look at a 2010 zx10 motor in a few days reason being is because its fits in there nice and snug, only engine mounts require changing but im happy with that especially with a motor putting down around 170rwhp.

reason i went this way is because its been done and the geometry is not to bad,

here you go.

Here is the zx7 with the gsxr1000 in, as you can see the frame requires alot of chopping.

Yeah fuck that, you dont want to be chopping a frame up that much just to fit another engine in.

Fuck ! What a kickarse conversion  Looks like you have the skills to get that in there nicely.
This would be a fantastic sneaky New Era (pre '95) Racebike - just cover up the motor with lots of fairings & infill panels ;) All the other competitors would want to know what you've done to your engine because you're passing everyone on the back wheel & spinning it up everywhere !!
I'll be watching this one closely.

Damn, it just gets better, the zx10 airbox fits under the zx7 tank with a nice amount of room at the front to make up a front air intake just above the radiator.

I have the bike to bare frame atm, just cleaning it up to have the mounts welded in, i have made the brackets in cad and sent that off to be laser cut out of some ally plate, just a waiting game now, once i have the brackets the motor can be mounted in permanently.

One other thing i didnt like is the later model zx10 08-10 went back to stainless steel headers , one generation below has the titanium headers 06-07, just a matter of finding out if the headers are interchangeable.
